Chapter 25 - chapter 25

The city felt too quiet.

Not peaceful.

Not calm.

Controlled.

Ethan walked beside Lena, his senses stretched thin.

Not pushing outward—

Just aware.

Ever since the last encounter, something had changed.

They weren't just watching anymore.

They were waiting.

"…You feel it too?" Lena asked softly.

Ethan nodded.

"…Yeah."

It wasn't a presence.

Not exactly.

It was the absence of randomness.

Everything felt… arranged.

Kai walked a few steps ahead, unusually silent.

That alone was enough to raise concern.

"…This isn't normal," Ethan muttered.

Kai didn't deny it.

"No," he said.

That single word confirmed everything.

Lena's voice lowered.

"…So what are they doing?"

Kai slowed slightly.

"Setting a condition."

Ethan frowned.

"…For what?"

Kai glanced back.

"Your response."

Silence.

That didn't sound like a fight.

It sounded like—

A setup.

Ethan's eyes sharpened.

"…Then we don't follow it."

Kai stopped walking.

"…You don't get that choice."

Ethan felt it then.

Sharp.

Sudden.

Wrong.

"…Wait."

Lena looked at him.

"…What is it?"

Ethan's focus snapped outward—

Not wide—

Targeted.

Searching.

And then—

He felt it.

Not near them.

Not around them.

Somewhere else.

"…They're not targeting me," he said.

Lena's expression tightened.

"…Then who?"

Ethan's breath caught slightly.

"…You."

Silence.

Then—

The realization hit.

Hard.

Lena stepped back slightly.

"…What?"

Kai's expression changed instantly.

"…Location?" he asked.

Ethan focused harder.

The connection shifted.

Not anchored.

Searching.

He followed the trace—

Faint.

But clear.

"…They marked you," Ethan said.

Lena's heartbeat quickened.

"…How?"

Ethan clenched his fist.

"…When we fought earlier… they got close."

Too close.

Kai turned sharply.

"Then we move. Now."

No hesitation.

They changed direction instantly.

Faster.

More focused.

Ethan's mind raced.

This wasn't random.

This wasn't testing.

This was leverage.

"…They want to see how I react," he muttered.

Kai didn't respond.

Because they both knew—

That was exactly it.

"…Ethan," Lena said quietly.

He glanced at her.

"…If something happens…"

He cut her off.

"…Nothing's happening."

His voice was firm.

Sharp.

Final.

Lena didn't argue.

But her grip tightened.

Because she understood.

This wasn't just about survival anymore.

This was personal.

They reached the street intersection.

Empty.

Too empty.

Ethan stopped.

"…It's here."

The air shifted instantly.

Three figures appeared.

Not hidden.

Not subtle.

Waiting.

In formation.

Lena's breath caught.

"…They were expecting us."

Ethan stepped forward slightly.

"…Of course they were."

Because this—

Was planned.

The central figure spoke.

"Subject confirmed. Secondary target present."

Ethan's chest tightened.

"…She's not a target."

The figure tilted their head.

"She is now."

That snapped something.

Inside him.

Sharp.

Uncontrolled.

Ethan's connection surged—

Strong.

Unstable.

Lena felt it immediately.

"…Ethan," she whispered.

Too late.

The pressure spiked.

The air distorted slightly.

Even the attackers paused.

"…Emotional spike detected," one of them said.

"Expected," the leader replied calmly.

Ethan's breathing grew heavier.

Not from fear—

From anger.

Cold.

Focused.

Dangerous.

"…Don't," Kai said sharply.

Ethan didn't hear him.

Or maybe—

He ignored him.

Because right now—

Nothing else mattered.

They had crossed the line.

The one thing he wouldn't allow.

Lena.

"…Ethan, look at me," Lena said urgently.

But his focus had narrowed.

Too far.

Too deep.

The connection shifted.

Not stable.

Not controlled.

Amplified.

Everything—

Heightened.

The attackers moved.

Fast.

Coordinated.

But Ethan didn't react normally.

He didn't predict.

Didn't analyze.

He overwhelmed.

A pulse exploded outward—

Raw.

Unfiltered.

The nearest attacker staggered instantly.

Movement disrupted.

Focus broken.

Ethan stepped forward—

Too fast.

Too aggressive.

Kai's voice cut through sharply.

"Stop!"

But Ethan didn't stop.

Because right now—

He wasn't thinking.

He was protecting.

The second attacker moved—

Trying to flank—

But Ethan turned instantly.

Another pulse—

Stronger.

Sharper.

The attacker froze for a split second—

And that was enough.

Ethan closed the distance—

Too fast.

Too precise.

But not controlled.

Not this time.

Lena saw it.

The difference.

"…He's losing it," she whispered.

Kai's expression hardened.

"…No."

A pause.

"…He's crossing it."

That was worse.

Because once crossed—

There was no easy way back.

The leader stepped forward.

Calm.

Unaffected.

"…Emotional overload detected," they said.

Ethan's gaze locked onto them.

Cold.

Dangerous.

"…Stay away from her."

His voice—

Didn't sound like his own.

The leader didn't react.

"…You've confirmed our hypothesis."

Ethan stepped forward.

The ground beneath his foot cracked slightly.

"…I said—stay away."

The connection surged again—

Violent this time.

Unstable.

The air distorted.

Even Lena felt it.

"…Ethan, stop!" she shouted.

But he didn't.

Because right now—

He wasn't holding back.

He was pushing everything forward.

The leader raised a hand—

And something changed.

Instantly.

Ethan's surge—

Halted.

Not blocked.

Not suppressed.

Contained.

"…What—" Ethan's eyes widened.

The leader stepped closer.

"…Your control is incomplete."

Ethan tried to push again—

But it didn't respond the same way.

His connection—

Was slipping.

Too unstable.

Too chaotic.

"…And that's your weakness," the leader said.

Ethan's breathing grew uneven.

Not from exhaustion—

From conflict.

Because part of him—

Knew it was true.

"…Ethan," Lena said again, softer this time.

That voice—

Cut through everything.

The noise.

The surge.

The chaos.

He froze.

Just for a second.

And in that second—

The connection shifted.

Back.

Toward stability.

Toward control.

He exhaled sharply.

"…No."

The surge faded.

Slowly.

Not completely—

But enough.

The leader stepped back.

"…Interesting."

The others stopped moving.

The tension eased.

"…Even at that level, you returned to control," the leader said.

Ethan's breathing steadied.

Barely.

"…Don't test me again," he said quietly.

The leader tilted their head.

"…We will."

Of course they would.

Because this—

Was data to them.

Nothing more.

Then—

They turned.

And left.

Just like that.

Gone.

Ethan stood still.

Not moving.

Not speaking.

Lena stepped closer.

"…Ethan?"

He didn't respond immediately.

Because he was still feeling it.

That moment.

That shift.

That loss—

Of control.

Kai walked up beside him.

"…That was dangerous," he said.

Ethan nodded slowly.

"…I know."

Lena placed a hand on his arm.

"…You stopped."

Ethan looked at her.

"…Barely."

Silence.

Because now—

They all understood.

The line.

The one he almost crossed.

And next time—

It might not stop.

Ethan exhaled slowly.

"…They used you."

Lena shook her head.

"…No."

She met his gaze.

"…They tried to."

A pause.

"…But you didn't let them."

Ethan didn't respond.

Because deep down—

He knew the truth.

He almost did.

And that—

Was the real danger.
