Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: The System

I didn't sleep.

Not even a little.

Turns out, no bed means no skipping the night. Just… sitting there. Listening. Existing.

Worst feature ever.

I sat in the corner of the shelter, back against the dirt wall, flint knife in hand, staring at the entrance like it had personally offended me.

"Yeah, this is great," I muttered quietly. "Ten out of ten experience."

Outside, something shuffled.

I froze instantly.

"…nine out of ten."

The hours dragged.

Every sound felt closer than it should've been. Every shadow looked like it moved when I wasn't staring directly at it.

At one point, I swear something stopped right outside the entrance.

Didn't break in.

Didn't attack.

Just… stood there.

I didn't breathe.

Didn't move.

Didn't even blink.

After what felt like forever, it moved again. Slow. Careful.

Gone.

"…I hate this pack."

Eventually, the darkness thinned.

Not gone.

Just… less.

The kind of light that makes everything look worse instead of better.

I slowly stood, stretching my legs, joints stiff.

"Alright," I whispered. "Still alive. That's good. That's—"

Something flickered in the corner of my vision.

I froze.

"…nope. Not doing that again."

I ignored it.

It flickered again.

"…if that's a zombie I'm uninstalling life."

I looked.

Top left of my inventory.

A small icon.

A book.

I stared at it for a solid five seconds.

"…that was not there before."

I poked it.

Nothing exploded.

Good start.

I clicked it.

The screen shifted instantly.

Clean.

Organized.

Not like JEI.

This felt… intentional.

Chapters lined the side.

Chapter 1: Primitive Survival — Complete

Chapter 2: First Shelter — Complete

"…oh. it's judging me."

I scrolled.

Chapter 3: Awareness — In Progress

Break scent using water ✔Avoid detection ✔Survive close encounter ☐I stared at the last one.

"…define close."

I did not like that.

At all.

I kept scrolling.

Chapter 4: Environment

Chapter 5: Defense

Chapter 6: Iron Age

Partially visible.

Then everything below—

Greyed out.

Locked.

Industry

Power Systems

Advanced Engineering

"…yeah, no idea what that means yet."

Further down—

I stopped.

DNA Research

No description.

No tasks.

Nothing.

Just the title.

"…that sounds illegal."

I scrolled past it immediately.

Nope.

Not today.

Then I noticed something else.

Top corner.

Points: 27

"…huh?"

The screen flickered.

A small log expanded.

Flint Tools Crafted +3Shelter Built +5First Night Survived +10Scent Avoided +5Iron Obtained +4"…oh."

It wasn't giving me stuff.

It was… tracking me.

Rewarding me.

For not dying.

"Cool. Love that. Big fan."

Another tab blinked into existence.

Mod Shop

I squinted at it.

"…there's no way that's what I think it is."

I clicked it.

The screen changed again.

Heavier this time.

Like opening it actually mattered.

A list appeared.

Real names.

Available Mods

AppleSkin — 8 PointsMouse Tweaks — 10 PointsFTB Ultimine — 20 PointsIron Chests — 12 Points"…you're joking."

I leaned in slightly.

"These are actual mods."

Not items.

Not recipes.

Mods.

I hovered over AppleSkin.

Food info.

Safe.

Boring.

Then FTB Ultimine.

Break multiple blocks.

Faster mining.

"…also louder."

I glanced toward the entrance.

Yeah. No thanks.

Not yet.

I scrolled.

Locked Mods

Create — 80 Points 🔒Immersive Engineering — 90 Points 🔒Mekanism — 110 Points 🔒"…machines."

That wasn't survival anymore.

That was infrastructure.

Way later.

I kept going.

World Expansion

The Twilight Forest — 140 Points 🔒The Aether — 160 Points 🔒I blinked.

"…you can leave?"

Dimensions.

Entire worlds.

Locked behind points.

That was… big.

Really big.

And then—

A small line under it.

Faint.

Almost hidden.

World Impact: Active

Actions influence outcome.

Positive or negative results may grant points.

I stared at it.

"…what does that mean?"

No explanation.

No examples.

Nothing.

Just that.

I leaned back slowly.

"So… what. I help people, I get points?"

"…I don't help people, I still get points?"

I frowned.

"…that feels like a trick."

I closed the tab for a second, thinking.

This wasn't just survival.

It wasn't just crafting.

It was watching what I did.

How I did it.

Why I did it.

"…yeah, that's definitely a trap."

I opened the shop again, hovering over the mods.

27 points.

Enough to buy something.

Not enough to fix a mistake.

I hovered over Iron Chests.

Storage.

Safe.

No downside.

Then over Ultimine.

Speed.

Noise.

Risk.

Zombies.

I slowly moved my cursor away.

"…I'm gonna regret this no matter what, huh."

I closed the menu.

The world came back into focus.

The trees.

The stream.

The quiet.

That same wrong quiet from before.

Something moved in the distance.

Still there.

Still watching.

I tightened my grip on the flint knife.

"Alright," I muttered.

"New rules."

"Don't die."

"Don't be stupid."

"…and maybe don't accidentally become a villain."

I paused.

"…or do. depends on the rewards."

A beat.

"…I'm kidding."

Another pause.

"…mostly."

I stepped out of the shelter, scanning the tree line.

Chapter 3 wasn't about surviving anymore.

It was about understanding.

And whatever this system was—

It was watching.
