Chapter 36 - Chapter 36: The Void Between Two Devils

The sky was falling. Not metaphorical fire, but literal shards of obsidian raining down as the capital became a tomb of glass.

[ System: Warning. The 'Tax Collector' has initiated city-wide liquidation. ]

I stood in the center of the shattered throne room. The ceiling was gone, replaced by the colossal, ribbed belly of a star-ship. The air tasted of ozone and the scorched blood of a thousand innocents. I turned to the man who had architected this nightmare.

Lucian Thorne was no longer the elegant CEO. His white silk shirt was soaked in a visceral mix of his own blood and shimmering silver dust. His skin was translucent in the violet light, but his eyes—those dark, abyssal pits—were fixed solely on me.

"Tell me the truth, Lucian," I said, my voice a jagged blade in the ruins. "What am I in your ledger? Am I a woman, or just a piece of hardware you bought at a premium?"

Lucian didn't flinch as a beam of violet energy struck a nearby palace tower, sending grey stone dust down like snow. "You are everything," he whispered. It was the rasp of a man who had sold his soul twice over.

"Don't lie to me!" I roared. The Lumen power surged, but it felt cold—a string being pulled by a puppet master. "The System... the 'Apostle' rank... it was all a trial version. You didn't save me from the Alpha. You just intercepted a delivery. You needed a vessel for Silvia's ghost, and I was the compatible fit."

Lucian walked toward me, boots crunching on the shattered Imperial crest. "Silvia was weak," he said, eyes burning with manic intensity. "She broke before the core could stabilize. But you... Elena... you are magnificent. You didn't just survive the System. You devoured it. I didn't order a machine. I ordered a goddess."

I slapped his reaching hand away. The sound echoed through the hollow chamber. "A goddess you can own," I corrected. "A goddess you can lock in a jar and keep on your desk."

A scream tore through the city below. Vahn, the Tax Collector, was moving. White-armored figures were harvesting souls to pay for my "installation."

"Lucian Thorne!" Vahn's voice boomed from the heavens. "The vessel is malfunctioning. The debt has tripled. Surrender the 'Elena' model for factory reset, or we will turn this sector into a black hole."

I looked at the ship, then back at Lucian. "Stop him. Use your power to save the city."

Lucian let out a brittle laugh. "Save them? Why would I save a world that wants to take you from me? The Emperor, the Council, the millions of ants in the street... they are just background noise to your heartbeat."

He grabbed my shoulders, his grip like iron. The Death Pact throbbed, sending a jolt of his madness directly into my soul.

[ System: Warning. Subordinate Lucian Thorne is in 'Total Obsession' mode. ]

[ System: Logic: The world is irrelevant. The Host is the only reality. ]

"Let go!" I struggled, but the System pinned my limbs.

[ System: Order: Do not resist the Creator. ]

"The System is mine, Elena!" Lucian hissed. "I programmed the 'Saintess' protocols. Every miracle was a hardware test. Every time you felt 'love' for me... it was a line of code I wrote." He pulled me closer, his breath smelling of copper. "But the code didn't work, did it? You still hate me."

"I despise you," I whispered, eyes glowing with dark, regal fire.

"Good," he murmured, a terrifying smile touching his lips. "Hate is a much stronger anchor than love. Hate will keep you with me in the dark."

The ground groaned as the liquidation accelerated. Vahn was losing patience.

"He's going to delete us both!" I yelled.

"Then let him!" Lucian screamed at the sky. "He can have the planet! But he will never have you!"

He crushed an obsidian crystal in his palm. A tear in the fabric of space opened behind him—a wound in reality. It was a vortex of absolute nothingness.

[ System: Warning. Entry into 'The Void' will result in 99% data loss. ]

[ System: Host 'Elena' will be disconnected from reality. ]

"No more Saintess," Lucian said, pulling me toward the vortex. "No more revenge. Just you and me, where even the gods cannot find us. I will build you a new world out of the silence."

I fought, digging my heels into the marble, but the gravity of the void was absolute. "I have a mission! I have to destroy Kilian! I have to take the throne!"

"Kilian is a bug," Lucian spat, face contorting with jealousy. "You still think of him? After I gave you a god's power? If I cannot have your heart, I will have your eternity."

Vahn appeared at the edge of the ruins, raising his staff. "The asset is attempting to enter a non-permitted zone! Initiate retrieval!"

Beams of light lashed out, striking Lucian's barrier. He coughed up blood but didn't let go. "I'll die a thousand times," he wheezed, "as long as I'm the last thing you see before the dark."

The vortex expanded. I felt my feet leave the ground. My robes were shredded by the gravitational tide.

[ System: Warning. Core Identity 'Elena' is failing. ]

[ System: System Shutdown in 10... 9... ]

I looked at the burning city one last time. I wasn't a Queen. I was a war prize being carried off into the shadows. The humiliation was worse than the pain.

"I'll kill you for this," I whispered.

Lucian smiled with blissful madness. "I look forward to it, my Queen. We have forever for you to try."

The Tax Collector fired a final, massive beam. The palace vanished. The city vanished. There was only the cold, iron grip of Lucian's hand.

[ System: Status: DISCONNECTED. ]

[ System: Current Location: THE VOID PRISON. ]

I opened my eyes to endless ink. There was no sound but Lucian's heavy breathing as he held me. "We're safe now," he whispered. His voice sounded inside my own head. "No one can touch you here."

I tried to summon my power, but the 'Light Tyrant' was a star with no sky. I was trapped in a prison made of nothingness, fueled by a man's obsession.

[ System: Rebooting in Safe Mode... ]

[ System: Question: How do you kill a man in a place where death doesn't exist? ]

I looked at him. He looked younger here, like the savior I had met in the rain. A beautiful, lethal lie.

"You won't keep me here, Lucian," I thought. The rage was the only thing the void couldn't swallow.

Far away, Vahn stood in the crater of the palace. He tapped his communication device. "The vessel has entered the Void. The Subordinate has sequestered the asset. Initiate 'Plan B'. Bring in the 'Sarah' model. We need a new Saintess by morning."

In the silence of the Void, I felt a ripple. A name. *Sarah.* My sister.

The rage within me crystallized. The Origin hadn't finished their game, and neither had Lucian. But I was the one with the system in my head. I would find the exit, and I would bring the Void with me.

"Sleep, Lucian," I whispered, my voice a silk thread. "I'll be here when you wake up. And I'll be the last thing you ever see."

[ System: Warning. Soul-Sync reaching 100%. ]

[ System: You are now one with the Jailer. ]

[ System: Phase 4: The Empress of Shadows begins now. ]

I let the darkness take me, but I didn't let go of the knife I had hidden in my mind. One day, the Void would break. And I would be the one holding the shards.
