The next day arrived faster than I expected and I had slept better than I had any right to on the hardened floor. When I woke there was a faint warmth somewhere deep inside me, like Cel was finding her way back slowly. It was just a feeling rather than anything concrete, no sharper senses or clearer thoughts, but it was there and I held onto it.
I was desperately thirsty. I had spent the previous night being as still and quiet as possible while the guards gathered around their fire and worked through their beer and rum until the moon was at its highest point. The more they drank the louder they became, and I had learned a great deal without them realising I was listening.
