Chapter 27 - The way he looks

Jay's POV.

After Aries and Percy left, the house didn't feel the same anymore. It wasn't silent in a peaceful way..it was the kind of silence that stays after something important passes through.

I leaned back on the couch, staring at nothing in particular, but my mind kept going back to that moment.

The way Aries had looked at Keifer.

Not like a stranger.

Not like someone he didn't trust.

But like someone who knew him too well.

And maybe that was worse.

Because they did know each other.

They weren't just friends once.

They were close. Really close.

I had seen it before..during my birthday, the way they moved around each other like they didn't need words to understand. That kind of bond doesn't just disappear.

So whatever stood between them now… it wasn't something small.

"Still thinking about it?"

His voice broke through my thoughts.

I looked up at Keifer, who had just walked in, his expression calm like always. But now I noticed things more. The way he paused slightly, like he already knew what I was thinking.

"I'm not," I said, even though it was obvious.

He walked over and sat beside me, close enough for me to feel him there without him touching me.

"You always say that when you are," he said quietly.

I didn't argue this time.

Instead, I looked at him properly. "You knew what that look meant."

It wasn't a question.

He didn't deny it. "I did."

I let out a small breath. "You guys used to be really close."

"Yes."

That one word carried more than he said.

"And now?" I asked softly.

He didn't answer immediately. His gaze shifted for a second, like he was choosing how much to say.

"Now we're… not," he replied.

"That's not a real answer."

"It's enough."

I frowned slightly, turning my body toward him. "It didn't feel like 'just not close'."

He looked at me again, and this time there was something heavier in his eyes.

"Some things don't end cleanly, Jay," he said.

That made my chest tighten.

"But you still care about them," I said.

It wasn't a guess.

"I do."

"And they care about you."

"They do."

I shook my head slightly, confused. "Then why does it feel like something's off?"

He didn't respond right away.

Instead, he leaned back, his voice quieter now. "Because some things change people."

That answer didn't feel complete.

But it felt true.

I studied his face, trying to read what he wasn't saying, but like always, he only let me see what he wanted me to see.

So I asked something else.

"Where do I fit in this?"

His gaze shifted back to me instantly.

"You don't," he said.

My heart dropped a little.

But before I could react, he continued—

"You're not part of that past."

I stayed quiet.

"You're something else," he added, his voice softer now.

"That still doesn't answer me."

He leaned slightly closer, his eyes not leaving mine.

"You're the only thing in my present that I don't question."

My breath caught.

The way he said it...

It wasn't dramatic.

It wasn't exaggerated.

It was just… real.

"That's not fair," I whispered.

"Why?"

"Because you make it sound so simple."

"It is simple," he replied.

"It's not," I shook my head. "Things like this… they don't stay like this forever."

His expression didn't change, but his gaze deepened.

"I'm not trying to make it perfect," he said. "I'm making it certain."

That word again.

Certain.

Like he had already decided everything.

"What if I'm not certain?" I asked quietly.

He didn't hesitate.

"Then I'll wait."

I looked at him, surprised. "For how long?"

"As long as it takes."

That answer..

It settled somewhere deep inside me.

Because people don't usually say things like that.

And even when they do...

They don't mean it.

But he did.

I could see it.

And that scared me.

Because he wasn't unsure.

He wasn't confused.

He wasn't holding back.

He was already there.

And I was still trying to understand it.

I swallowed slightly, my voice softer now. "What if this is too good to last?"

For a moment, he didn't respond.

Then he reached out, gently holding my chin, making me look at him.

"Look at me," he said quietly.

I did.

"There's nothing temporary about me," he continued, his voice calm but firm. "When I choose something, I don't walk away from it."

My heart started racing.

"And I chose you."

The words were simple.

But they didn't feel light.

They felt like a promise.

I didn't move.

Didn't pull away.

Because in that moment, I believed him.

Not fully.

Not completely.

But enough.

Enough to stay.

Enough to feel something real.

And as I looked at him, a thought formed quietly in my mind...

What if this is everything?

But right behind it...

Another one followed.

What if it doesn't last?
