Chapter 17 - The First Choice to Fight

Night fell quietly.

Too quietly.

Elena stood at the edge of the street.

The city lights flickered softly around her.

Cars passed.

People walked.

Everything looked normal.

But now—

She knew better.

"…It's going to happen again, isn't it?"

Her voice was calm.

Not scared.

Not panicked.

Just aware.

The figure stood beside her.

Silent as always.

"…Yes."

No hesitation.

No lies.

Elena nodded slowly.

"…Then where?"

A pause.

Then—

"…There."

They pointed across the street.

A small alley.

Dark.

Narrow.

Easy to ignore.

Elena's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…That place looks like trouble even without the system."

"…That's why it chose it."

Of course it did.

She let out a quiet breath.

"…So this is it."

Her first real step.

Not reacting.

Not surviving.

But choosing.

Her fingers curled slightly.

"…If I go in there…"

A pause.

"…I might not come back."

The figure didn't deny it.

"…Yes."

Silence.

Then—

Elena stepped forward.

"…Okay."

No hesitation this time.

No running.

"I'll go."

The figure watched her carefully.

"…Why?"

She stopped for a second.

Thinking.

Really thinking.

Then—

"…Because if I don't…"

Her eyes shifted slightly.

"…someone else might die."

Simple.

Not heroic.

Not dramatic.

Just real.

The figure didn't respond.

But they didn't stop her either.

The alley was colder.

Darker.

Quieter.

Each step echoed softly.

Elena's senses sharpened instantly.

Every sound.

Every shadow.

Every movement.

Her chest flickered faintly.

"…I can feel it…"

The anomaly responded.

Like it knew.

Like it was waiting.

"…Stay focused."

The voice came softly behind her.

"I am."

Her breath slowed.

Steady.

Controlled.

For once.

Then—

A sound.

A soft cry.

Elena froze.

"…Did you hear that?"

"…Yes."

Her heart tightened.

"…Someone's here."

She moved faster now.

Careful.

But urgent.

The sound grew clearer.

A girl.

Crying.

Trapped in the corner of the alley.

Her body shaking.

Terrified.

"…Hey—"

Elena stepped forward slightly.

"It's okay—"

But then—

The air changed.

Instantly.

Violently.

Elena stopped.

Her expression hardened.

"…No…"

She knew this feeling.

Too well.

"It's already here…"

The girl didn't notice.

Didn't understand.

Still crying.

Still human.

Still unaware.

Elena clenched her fists.

"…Stay behind me."

The girl didn't respond.

Too scared.

Too confused.

The distortion began.

The space twisted.

Cracked.

Opened.

And something stepped out.

Smaller than before.

But sharper.

Faster.

More precise.

Elena's eyes locked onto it.

"…You again."

Her voice dropped.

Not fear.

Recognition.

The creature moved instantly.

Straight for the girl.

"Elena!"

"I see it!"

Her body reacted.

Faster than before.

Cleaner.

No hesitation.

She stepped in—

Blocking it.

Their collision sent a shock through the air.

Elena slid back slightly.

But didn't fall.

"…I can keep up…"

Her breath steady.

Her eyes sharp.

The creature attacked again.

Faster.

Relentless.

Elena moved.

Step.

Turn.

Dodge.

Each movement precise.

Controlled.

Not perfect—

But real.

"I'm not the same anymore…"

Her chest burned.

That warmth—

Strong.

Stable.

Listening to her.

She struck back.

Her hand hitting its form—

A sharp crack echoed.

The creature staggered slightly.

Elena's eyes widened.

"…I can damage it…"

The figure watched from behind.

Silent.

But ready.

The creature adapted.

Faster again.

It struck—

Elena blocked.

Barely.

The impact pushed her back.

Her arms shaking.

"…Still too strong…"

Her breath hitched.

But she didn't fall.

Didn't run.

Not this time.

"I chose this…"

Her fingers tightened.

"I'm not backing down."

The creature lunged again—

Elena moved forward.

Not away.

Forward.

Meeting it head-on.

Their clash echoed again.

Louder.

Stronger.

The air cracked.

The ground trembled.

The girl behind her screamed softly.

Elena didn't turn.

Didn't hesitate.

"I'll protect you."

The words came out naturally.

Without thinking.

Without doubt.

And for the first time—

They felt real.

The creature faltered.

Just for a second.

Elena saw it.

That opening.

"That's it—!"

She moved.

Faster than before.

Her chest burning bright.

Her hand shot forward—

And struck.

Direct.

Clean.

The creature shattered.

Not violently.

But completely.

Gone.

Just like that.

Silence returned.

Heavy.

But calm.

Elena stood there.

Breathing hard.

Her body shaking.

"…I did it…"

Her voice trembled.

Not from fear.

But from realization.

"I protected someone…"

The girl behind her sobbed softly.

Alive.

Safe.

Elena turned slowly.

"…You're okay."

The girl nodded weakly.

"…Th-thank you…"

Elena froze for a second.

Those words—

Felt heavier than anything.

"…It's okay…"

Her voice softened.

"…You're safe now."

Outside the alley—

The world was still normal.

Still unaware.

Still moving.

Elena stepped out slowly.

Her body tired.

But her mind—

Clear.

"…That felt different."

The figure walked beside her.

"…Because you chose it."

She nodded slightly.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

Then—

"…I wasn't just surviving."

Her eyes lifted.

Looking forward.

"I was fighting."

Silence.

Then—

"…And protecting."

Elena let out a small breath.

"…I think I understand now."

The figure looked at her.

"…What?"

A pause.

Then—

"…Why I'm still here."

Her chest felt lighter.

Not free.

Not safe.

But—

Meaningful.

And for the first time—

That was enough.
