Silent Hill will deeply move you, allowing everyone to experience long-lost carefree days.
Several years ago, James and Mary were attracted by these exaggerated promotional slogans and arrived at Silent Hill full of anticipation.
That event feels so distant now, as if it happened in the previous century.
He and Mary met at a regular gathering among friends. Though it was just an ordinary encounter, when their gazes met, it seemed as though the gears of fate turned, and love blossomed.
Their affection grew daily, gradually settling over time, transforming from passionate fervor into steadfast tenderness.
Perhaps to beautify a story often requires tragedy as its conclusion.
Mary contracted a terminal illness.
The lengthy treatment was like a demon, mercilessly devouring the sweetness and past they once shared.
James, who constantly cared for his wife, stood vigil by the hospital bed, watching the person he once deeply loved wither away under illness, becoming increasingly unfamiliar, his heart tormented.
Perhaps, from the moment his wife fell ill, the ending of their love had already been written.
—--
Rosewater Park, gazebo.
James tightly gripped a wooden club with iron spikes, slowly advancing along the lakeside walking path.
He gazed at Toluca Lake obscured by dense fog, attempting to recall the sights he and Mary had shared, but his mind was blank, nothing remained.
Because, at that time, his eyes were only on Mary.
Through the white, hazy mist, he vaguely saw a figure standing in the gazebo.
Approaching, it was a slender woman.
Golden hair cascaded down her shoulders, wearing a red short leather vest on top and a black hip-fitting miniskirt that clung tightly to her waist and hip curves, the skirt hem so short it reached her thigh roots.
Her long legs were wrapped in black stockings, faintly revealing the fair, tender skin beneath.
Most importantly, this silhouette resembled his wife, Mary.
The woman sensed someone approaching and turned around.
James looked at the woman's face, almost identical to his wife, his expression wavering momentarily before he shook his head: "No… that's not…"
Though the appearance was strikingly similar, this woman's aura differed drastically from his conservative, gentle wife.
Seeing James's stunned expression, the woman's lips curled into a playful smile: "What? Do I look like your girlfriend?"
James looked incredulous: "No, like my deceased wife."
"Your looks, your voice… just like hers…"
Maria listened to these words, chuckled lightly, and interrupted James: "My name is Maria, I'm neither your wife nor any ghost."
As she spoke, she suddenly stepped forward, took James's hand, and placed it against her own cheek. "Look, there's warmth, right?"
Feeling the smooth touch and body warmth transmitted through his palm, James felt a surge of emotion.
Looking at this woman who shared his wife's appearance yet behaved in a starkly contrasting manner, a long-suppressed impulse welled up deep in his heart.
He withdrew his hand as if shocked by electricity and promptly apologized: "No... sorry, I mistook you for someone else."
—--
On a bench not far away.
Sephirot sat with one leg crossed over the other, casually fiddling with a silver M1911, calmly gazing toward the gazebo.
In his line of sight, there was no blonde beauty there.
Only James stood alone inside the gazebo, emotionally talking to himself into the empty air, occasionally reaching out to grope at something in the void, then abruptly pulling his hand back like a startled virgin.
He really got pulled into this?
If following the plot... this should be where he encounters Maria?
Sephirot's mind conjured the image from the original work, a figure dressed quite seductively, with an open personality.
Maria represented the suppressed sexuality and desires deep within James's heart.
His wife Mary, long eroded by illness, had led to skin ulceration and sores, no longer beautiful.
That once gentle woman had become irritable and emotionally unstable.
She endlessly blamed and verbally abused James, venting all her pain and dissatisfaction onto this person who loved her most.
No one remains dutiful long before a sickbed, let alone between husband and wife.
Initially, James deeply loved his wife in his heart; he could tolerate her verbal abuse, even amid those unreasonable tantrums, trying to find traces of Mary's former lovable self.
But over time, under the dual high pressure of physical revulsion and psychological torment, love gradually deteriorated.
Subconsciously, he began to reject the sickbed-bound wife who was both ugly in appearance and irritable in temper.
And precisely at that time, deep in his heart, he desperately longed for a healthy, sexy, utterly compliant partner who also bore Mary's face, a perfect companion.
Thus, Silent Hill, catering to James's inner darkness, thoughtfully fabricated the wife he imagined in his heart and brought her before him.
Seeing James interacting with the empty air for quite a while, seeming finally to finish talking and preparing to leave the courtyard, Sephirot then stood up, stretched his back, and strode forward.
"Excuse me."
Sephirot spoke up. "Such refined interest in admiring the scenery here?"
Hearing this voice suddenly emerging from the mist, James was startled. He raised a wooden stick with his right hand, clutching it tightly with his left, ready to swing it for battle at any moment.
When he clearly saw the approaching person, a trace of surprise appeared on his weary and anxious face: "Mr. Sephirot? Why are you here?"
The next moment, he abruptly remembered that not long before, he had visited that so-called "Devil May Cry" Agency and placed a request.
Only, within this silence, amidst the endless dense fog and encounters with monsters, the boundaries of time had blurred for him.
That oppressive feeling of days dragging like years made it seem as if this matter had occurred very long ago.
And the person who had accepted the request at that time was precisely this young Asian man now before him.
"I took your request, appearing here is normal. But this isn't a place ordinary people should come to. How did you get pulled into it?"
Sephirot replied.
But soon, he shrugged, appearing unconcerned: "Never mind, since we've met, let's go together then. Consider it the Agency's after-sales service."
"That day, after placing the request at the Agency, I felt disoriented on my way home."
"Without realizing it, I arrived here. When I wanted to go back, the road was already blocked dead."
James smiled bitterly, though being able to encounter a familiar person in such a bizarre place also let him relax a bit.
As if remembering something, he quickly turned sideways, pointing toward the empty air behind him and introducing: "Right, Mr. Sephirot, this is... Maria."
"We just met... I mean, she looks... very much like Mary."
Sephirot looked in the direction his finger pointed.
There was only white mist and railings there.
He didn't pick up on James's topic but directly interrupted: "Mr. James."
"What?"
James, seeing that he didn't acknowledge his introduction, felt somewhat puzzled.
"Do you truly remember nothing at all?"
Sephirot stared into James's eyes, his voice calm. "Having been here so long, haven't you recalled anything at all?"

TL NOTES — CROSSOVER GUIDE Some references in this chapter come from source universes that may be unfamiliar to some readers. The notes below are here to help readers unfamiliar with these universes follow along more easily.
CHARACTERS
Maria — A character unique to Silent Hill 2, with no equivalent in the film. She is not a real person but a manifestation conjured by Silent Hill itself from James's subconscious: his guilty desire for a version of Mary that was healthy, sensual, and uncomplicated by illness or resentment. In the game, she plays a central role in James's psychological journey, repeatedly dying in front of him and resurrecting, each death forcing him to confront his buried feelings in increasingly painful ways. She is aware, on some level, of her own artificial nature, and this shapes her complex attitude toward James: she wants him to choose her over the real Mary's memory, but she cannot fully escape what she truly is.
PLACES
Rosewater Park / Toluca Lake — Key locations in Silent Hill 2. Rosewater Park is where James first encounters Maria in the game, on the shore of Toluca Lake, the large body of water at the center of the town. The lake has its own dark history in the Silent Hill lore: it was used as a mass grave during the town's past, and its depths are said to connect to other dimensions.
