Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: The Future Watches Back

The chamber didn't change.

But Kael did.

He stood there for a long moment after the vision ended.

Not moving.

Not speaking.

Just… thinking.

For once.

Not reacting.

Not fighting.

Thinking.

"…You saw it clearly, didn't you?"

Her voice broke the silence.

Kael didn't answer immediately.

Instead—

He exhaled slowly.

"…Yeah."

His eyes remained on the pedestal.

On the shard.

"…That wasn't just a possibility."

A pause.

"…That already happened."

"…Yes."

Kael clenched his fist.

"…And I lost."

Silence.

But this time—

It wasn't heavy.

It was understood.

"…Then why show me that?"

He turned slightly toward her.

"…To warn me?"

"…No."

She shook her head.

"…To prepare you."

Kael frowned.

"…There's a difference?"

"…A big one."

She stepped forward.

Stopping beside him.

"…A warning makes you hesitate."

A pause.

"…Preparation makes you act."

Kael let out a quiet breath.

"…So you're saying that was inevitable."

"…It was."

"…And now?"

Her gaze sharpened.

"…Now it isn't."

Silence stretched between them.

Kael looked at his hand again.

The same hand that had reached for the shard.

The same hand that—

In that vision—

Had failed.

"…I was stronger there."

He said it quietly.

"…Much stronger than I am now."

"…Yes."

"…And I still lost."

"…Yes."

That was the problem.

Not lack of power.

Not lack of effort.

Something else.

"…Then power alone isn't enough."

"…Finally."

He glanced at her.

"…You've been trying to tell me that."

"…Since the beginning."

Kael smirked faintly.

"…Yeah, I know."

But now—

He understood it.

Not as advice.

But as fact.

He turned back to the shard.

"…So what is this thing?"

She looked at it.

"…A fragment."

"…Of what?"

"…Of that world."

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"…The future?"

"…Yes."

"…So it's real."

"…More real than anything here."

That didn't make sense.

"…Then why is it here?"

She didn't answer immediately.

"…Because something brought it back."

Kael's expression hardened.

"…Something like that thing?"

"…No."

A pause.

"…Something worse."

That—

Was not reassuring.

"…There's something worse than that?"

She looked at him.

"…You haven't seen everything yet."

Kael let out a dry breath.

"…Of course I haven't."

The shard pulsed again.

Faint.

But noticeable.

Kael stared at it.

"…Can I use it?"

"…No."

Immediate.

Firm.

"…Why not?"

"…Because it will use you."

Silence.

Kael frowned.

"…Everything uses me."

"…Not like this."

Her gaze didn't waver.

"…This isn't power."

A pause.

"…It's a record."

"…Of failure."

That hit differently.

Kael looked at it again.

"…Then why keep it here?"

"…To remind those who find it."

"…Of what?"

Her voice dropped slightly.

"…That some endings… don't change easily."

Silence.

Kael stood there.

Then—

He turned away.

"…Then I'll just have to make it change."

Her eyes followed him.

"…You really believe that?"

Kael stopped.

"…No."

A pause.

"…But I'll do it anyway."

That answer—

Was enough.

They left the chamber.

The moment they stepped out—

The world returned.

The entrance reappeared behind them.

The forest breathed again.

But something had changed.

Kael could feel it.

A shift.

Subtle.

But real.

"…We're not alone."

"…No."

Her voice was calm.

"…We haven't been for a while."

Kael's eyes sharpened.

"…Why didn't you say anything?"

"…Because they weren't a threat."

"…And now?"

A pause.

"…Now they're curious."

That wasn't better.

Kael turned slowly.

"…Show yourself."

Silence.

Then—

Movement.

From the trees—

Figures emerged.

Not one.

Not two.

Many.

All cloaked.

All silent.

"…Observers," she said quietly.

"…Of what?"

"…You."

Kael smirked faintly.

"…I'm popular."

But his eyes remained sharp.

"…What do they want?"

"…To see what you become."

"…And if I don't meet expectations?"

Silence.

Then—

"…They'll erase you."

Kael chuckled.

"…Everyone wants to do that."

"…Yes."

A pause.

"…But they actually can."

That—

Was new.

The cloaked figures stepped forward.

Slow.

Measured.

No hostility.

But no friendliness either.

One of them moved ahead of the others.

Stopping a few steps away.

"…Anomaly confirmed."

Kael sighed.

"…I'm getting tired of that word."

"…Deviation from expected path."

"…Yeah, that's me."

The figure tilted its head slightly.

"…You have seen it."

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"…The future?"

"…Yes."

"…Then you know what happens."

"…Yes."

Silence.

Then—

"…And you still continue."

Kael shrugged.

"…Got nothing better to do."

A pause.

"…Incorrect."

The figure stepped closer.

"…You continue because you believe it can change."

Kael smirked faintly.

"…Believe is a strong word."

"…Then what drives you?"

Kael went quiet.

For a moment—

He didn't answer.

Then—

"…I don't like losing."

Simple.

Honest.

The figure studied him.

"…Insufficient."

"…Good enough."

A long silence followed.

Then—

The figure stepped back.

"…Observation will continue."

Kael frowned.

"…That's it?"

"…For now."

"…You're not going to attack?"

"…Not yet."

That—

Was worse.

"…Why?"

The figure's voice remained calm.

"…Because your path has not yet diverged enough."

"…From what?"

"…From failure."

Silence.

Kael's eyes hardened.

"…Then watch closely."

A faint pause.

"…We will."

The cloaked figures began to fade.

Disappearing into the forest.

Until—

They were gone.

Silence returned.

Kael exhaled slowly.

"…I don't like them."

"…You shouldn't."

He glanced at her.

"…You knew about them."

"…Yes."

"…And you didn't tell me."

"…Would it have changed anything?"

Kael paused.

"…No."

"…Exactly."

Silence.

Then—

Kael looked ahead.

"…So now what?"

She stepped forward.

"…Now…"

Her voice was calm.

"…We go deeper."

Kael smirked.

"…Of course we do."

But his eyes—

Were different now.

Focused.

Determined.

Because now—

He wasn't just fighting to survive.

He wasn't just chasing power.

He had seen the end.

And now—

He was walking toward it.

Not to avoid it.

But to break it.

Step by step.

No matter who watched.

No matter what stood in his way.

Because this time—

The future wouldn't be enough.

He would go beyond it.
