Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: The First Divergence

The forest no longer felt like a place.

It felt like a test.

Every step forward carried weight.

Not physical—

But something deeper.

Expectation.

Kael could feel it now.

Not just from the creatures.

Not just from the environment.

But from something unseen.

Watching.

Waiting.

"…They're still there," he said quietly.

She walked beside him, unbothered.

"…Of course they are."

Kael's gaze remained forward.

"…Observers don't stop watching."

"…Not when something interesting is happening."

A pause.

"…And I'm interesting now."

"…Very."

That didn't sit well with him.

But it didn't matter.

Because if they were watching—

Then he would give them something worth seeing.

"…You said something earlier," Kael said.

"…About my path not diverging enough."

"…Yes."

"…So what does that mean?"

She didn't answer immediately.

Instead—

She looked ahead.

"…It means that everything you've done so far…"

A pause.

"…still leads to the same end."

Kael's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…Even after all this?"

"…Yes."

Silence.

That was frustrating.

"…Then what needs to change?"

Her gaze shifted to him.

"…You."

"…That's vague."

"…It's the truth."

Kael exhaled slowly.

"…Then be specific."

She stopped walking.

Forcing him to stop as well.

"…Right now, you're still reacting."

Kael frowned.

"…I've been doing more than that."

"…Yes."

She stepped closer.

"…But at your core…"

Her eyes locked onto his.

"…You're still following the same instincts."

A pause.

"…The same choices."

"…The same path."

Kael went quiet.

"…So what?"

"…So that path ends the same way."

Silence.

Kael looked away slightly.

"…Then I just need to make different choices."

"…No."

He looked back at her.

"…No?"

"…Not just different."

Her voice dropped slightly.

"…Opposite."

That—

Caught his attention.

"…Opposite…"

"…Yes."

A pause.

"…If you keep choosing strength…"

"…You lose."

Kael's expression darkened.

"…Then what am I supposed to choose?"

Her answer came immediately.

"…Something you haven't chosen before."

Silence.

That didn't help.

"…That's not an answer."

"…It's the only one you're getting."

Kael clicked his tongue.

"…You're really bad at explaining things."

"…And you're really bad at listening."

A faint smirk touched his lips.

"…Fair."

The forest shifted again.

But this time—

It wasn't hostile.

It wasn't tense.

It was… quiet.

Too quiet.

"…We're close to something," Kael muttered.

"…Yes."

Her voice was softer now.

"…A turning point."

Kael raised a brow.

"…That sounds important."

"…It is."

A pause.

"…This is where it starts to change."

"…Or ends the same."

"…Yes."

That—

Was the reality.

They stepped into another clearing.

But unlike the others—

This one wasn't empty.

There were people.

Kael froze.

"…What…?"

A group.

Five figures.

Human.

Injured.

Exhausted.

Real.

"…Survivors…" he said quietly.

"…No," she replied.

"…They're not supposed to be here."

That didn't make sense.

"…They look pretty real to me."

"…That's the problem."

One of the figures noticed them.

"…Hey!"

A man.

Wounded.

"…Over here!"

The others turned.

Relief visible on their faces.

"…We thought we were the only ones…"

Kael stepped forward instinctively.

"…Wait—" she started.

Too late.

"…What happened to you?" Kael asked.

The man exhaled heavily.

"…Monsters… something's wrong with this place…"

Kael glanced at the others.

They looked real.

Scared.

Human.

"…We need help," another said.

A woman.

"…Please…"

Kael's expression shifted slightly.

Something about this—

Felt off.

"…You don't trust them," she said quietly.

"…No."

"…Good."

That confirmed it.

Kael's eyes sharpened.

"…You're not supposed to be here."

The group froze.

"…What…?"

"…What are you talking about?" the man asked.

Kael stepped forward slowly.

"…This place doesn't have survivors."

Silence.

Then—

Something changed.

Subtle.

But unmistakable.

Their expressions—

Didn't shift.

They broke.

Like masks cracking.

"…You noticed."

Their voices—

Changed.

Flat.

Wrong.

Kael's grip tightened.

"…Figures."

The forms began to distort.

Flesh twisting.

Bodies shifting.

Until—

They were no longer human.

"…Test entities," she said calmly.

"…Designed to provoke a response."

Kael exhaled slowly.

"…Figures it wouldn't be that simple."

"…It never is."

The creatures stepped forward.

Not aggressive.

Not yet.

"…Response evaluation in progress."

Kael frowned.

"…More observers?"

"…No."

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

"…Something else."

Kael stepped forward.

"…Alright."

His stance shifted.

Ready.

"…Let's get this over with."

But they didn't attack.

Instead—

They spoke.

"…You chose caution."

Kael blinked.

"…What?"

"…You did not approach blindly."

"…You questioned."

"…You hesitated."

Kael's expression darkened.

"…And?"

"…That is not the expected behavior."

Silence.

"…So what?"

"…That is the first divergence."

Everything went still.

Kael's breath slowed.

"…What did you just say?"

"…Your path…"

A pause.

"…Has changed."

Kael's eyes widened slightly.

"…That's it?"

"…No."

The creatures stepped back.

"…Now we observe the consequences."

"…Wait—"

Too late.

They dissolved.

Gone.

Just like that.

Silence returned.

Kael stood there.

Processing.

"…That was it…?"

"…Yes."

He turned to her.

"…I just… didn't trust them."

"…And that changed everything."

Kael frowned.

"…That's ridiculous."

"…No."

Her gaze was steady.

"…That's how it starts."

A pause.

"…Small changes."

"…Different choices."

"…Leading to different outcomes."

Kael looked at his hand.

"…So I did it…"

"…Yes."

"…I changed the path."

"…For the first time."

Silence.

Then—

A slow smile formed.

"…That's it?"

"…That's it."

Kael let out a breath.

"…Then I just keep doing that."

"…It won't be that easy."

"…It never is."

But now—

There was something new.

Not just determination.

Not just purpose.

But proof.

That things could change.

That the future—

Wasn't fixed.

Kael looked ahead.

"…Then let's keep going."

Her eyes lingered on him.

For just a moment longer.

"…Yes."

Because now—

Everything was different.

The path had split.

And whatever lay ahead—

Was no longer certain.
