Chapter 6 - Chapter 6 — Too Close to Ignore

The party didn't last much longer after that.

At least—not for them.

"Walk with me," Ethan said.

Not a question.

Lena glanced at him.

Then nodded.

They left the ballroom together.

Eyes followed them.

Whispers trailed behind.

Good.

Let them watch.

The night air was cooler outside.

Quiet.

Private.

For a moment—

neither of them spoke.

Then—

"You enjoyed that," Ethan said.

Lena looked ahead.

"I don't enjoy unnecessary conversations."

A pause.

"But I don't avoid them either."

Ethan's gaze lingered on her.

Longer than it should have.

"You handled her well."

Lena turned slightly.

"Was that approval?"

"Observation," he corrected.

She smiled faintly.

"Of course."

Silence again.

But this time—

it felt different.

Less cold.

dangerous.

They stopped near the edge of the terrace.

The city lights stretched below them.

Lena rested her hands lightly on the railing.

Ethan stood beside her.

Close.

Too close.

"You knew about her," he said.

Not a question.

Lena didn't deny it.

"I prefer not to walk into situations unprepared."

Ethan let out a quiet breath.

"That wasn't preparation," he said.

"That was strategy."

Lena glanced at him.

"And you don't like that?"

A pause.

His eyes met hers.

"I don't like surprises."

Lena held his gaze.

"Then don't underestimate me."

Something shifted.

Again.

Ethan stepped closer.

This time—

there was no space left between them.

"Is that what this is?" he asked quietly.

Lena didn't move.

"Underestimation?"

His hand lifted.

Slow.

Deliberate.

For a moment—

it hovered near her face.

Then—

he brushed a strand of hair behind her ear.

Light.

Careful.

But not distant.

Lena's breath stilled.

Just slightly.

"You're breaking your own rule," she said softly.

Ethan didn't step back.

If anything—

he leaned closer.

Like he wasn't planning to stop.

"And you didn't stop me."

A beat.

Lena's eyes sharpened.

"Don't mistake tolerance for permission."

That should have ended it.

But it didn't.

Ethan's gaze dropped briefly—

to her lips.

Then back to her eyes.

Something dangerous flickered there.

"Careful," he murmured.

"Or what?" Lena asked.

His voice lowered.

"You might not be the only one playing this game."

Silence.

Charged.

Unsteady.

For the first time—

something between them tilted.

Not control.

Not strategy.

Something else.

Then—

footsteps.

They both stepped back.

Perfect timing.

A staff member approached.

"Mr. Carter, your car is ready."

Ethan didn't look away from Lena.

"Good."

He turned.

Then paused.

"Coming?" he asked.

Lena met his eyes.

"Do I have a choice?"

A faint smirk.

"Not tonight."

The car ride was quiet.

But not empty.

Lena looked out the window.

She could still feel it.

The way he had looked at her.

The way he hadn't stopped.

Dangerous.

Beside her—

Ethan sat still.

But his thoughts weren't.

Not anymore.

For the first time—

she wasn't just part of the deal.

She was becoming a problem.

And he didn't know—

whether to eliminate the problem.

Or let it completely ruin him.

Because for the first time—

walking away didn't feel like winning.
