Chapter 11 - [Chapter 11:Emergence]

Thirty minutes after the battle with the serpent....

Xander slowly regained consciousness, his body enveloped in a warm, comforting sensation. It felt as if a gentle energy was flowing through him. He slowly blinked open his eyes, squinting against the dazzling light of a colossal, radiant green orb suspended in mid-air.

He found himself nestled on a bed of soft, squelchy earth, propped against a rugged, moss-covered rock. Despite expecting a surge of pain, Xander felt surprisingly serene, almost as if he had just received a thorough, relaxing massage. His mind, however, was still clouded, struggling to process the aftermath of the intense battle they had just endured.

Fully opening his eyes, Xander's senses began to sharpen, allowing him to absorb his surroundings. He could hear voices nearby, one exclaiming in amazement, "This is incredible! I thought we were all gonna die for sure..." The voice seemed familiar but distant, like a half-remembered dream.

Glancing around, Xander is met with a vista of verdant greenery, the tall grass gently swaying in a refreshing breeze—a stark contrast to the dim, foreboding confines of the dungeon. "Did I die and go to heaven?"he mused to himself, half-jokingly, still trying to piece together his reality.

Then he heard another voice, one that instantly resonated with him. "Hahahaha... I'm honestly relieved the dungeon cores work this way..." It was unmistakably Mi'kael.

Attempting to stand up, Xander instinctively reaches out with his left arm for support. However, as he leans on it, he stumbles and collapses to the ground, a startling numbness where his arm should be. Gazing down in shock, he sees only a stump—half of his arm is gone, covered by a bloody soaked piece of ripped clothing.

A sardonic laugh escapes him, tinged with bitterness. "Oh, right, I guess there are rules even in heaven. My arm must've gone to hell with that serpent," he quips grimly.

As he tries to collect himself, a soft groan to his right catches his attention. Turning his head, he sees Layla, only a few feet away, slowly coming to. She sits up, looking as if she's awakening from a deep slumber.

While looking at Layla, the cool breeze around Xander slows down for a moment, resulting in him becoming acutely aware of an overpowering, foul stench. Initially confused, he soon realizes the source of the smell is himself, covered head to toe in remnants of the serpent's guts, he is presented with a grisly sight. By contrast, Layla, who was slowly regaining consciousness beside him, was splattered with far less gore.

Struggling to his feet, Xander's ears tuned into the nearby conversation. Tony's voice, laden with streetwise slang, carried over. "You mean to tell me the kid took down that monster all by himself? Damn, that's some serious skills right there. You sure 'bout that?"

"Yeah, man, saw it with my own eyes. Though I was pretty much out of it, lying there thinking my ribs were history." Jasper responded while dramatically gesturing at his ribs.

Xander, still trying to process the reality of his harrowing experience, feels a mix of embarrassment and a strange sense of accomplishment upon hearing their words. But he's quickly pulled back to the present when Layla, still groggy, turns to him with wide, questioning eyes.

"X-Xander? What... what happened to the serpent? I remember getting my sword and then... and then I heard your voice and!!-" Her voice trailed off as the memories of the fight flooded back, her expression turning to one of panic and confusion.

Xander, still processing the events himself, interrupted her rising panic. "I think we're safe now, though I'm not exactly sure how we ended up here."

Layla's gaze fell to Xander's arm, or rather, where his arm used to be. "What happened to your arm?" she asked, with concern etching her features.

Before Xander could formulate a response, Jasper's voice boomed across the area, breaking the tension. "Yooo, you guys up? Thought you'd be napping all day!" His laughter, filled with relief and excitement, echoed around them.

Mi'kael, walking up behind Jasper, gives Xander a friendly, albeit weak, dap with his good hand. "Man, it's good to see you in one piece...well, almost one piece, Thought we were goners for sure. Shame about the arm, though…"

Jasper, ever the optimist, jumped in with a grin. "Hey, don't sweat it! We'll get you a badass robotic arm or something. You'll be like a superhero!"

Despite the pain and loss, Xander couldn't help but smile at Jasper's attempt to lighten the mood. "Yeah, I guess it's time for an upgrade…"

"I'm gonna need a long explanation on what went down," Layla insisted, still trying to piece together the events.

Tony pointed towards Alfred, who stood aloof with arms crossed. "Why don't you ask old man Alfred here? He had the best view, just watching from the sidelines."

Alfred bristled at the comment. "Don't forget it was my device that turned the tide. Do you have any idea how much that cost? It's military-grade, you know!"

Tony shot a skeptical look at Alfred. "Oh yeah? Like you were gonna use that when you were snake food. Right."

Jasper couldn't resist adding his own comment, "Should've known you'd have something up your sleeve, Alfred. Always the secretive old head type, huh?"

"Seriously though, what in the hell happened back in the dungeon? How did we get here, and... is that the dungeon core?" He gestured towards the green glowing orb floating in mid-air, its luminescence casting an ethereal glow on the group.

The group's attention shifted as Mi'kael began to recount the events.

"After you blew up the serpent, you were out cold and your arm was... well, it was pretty bad," Mi'kael explained, gesturing towards the makeshift bandage tied around Xander's stump. The group, including Xander, instinctively glanced down at the piece of cloth tightly wound around his stump.

Mi'kael continued, "I was losing blood fast from my shoulder too. But with the beast down, I hoped we'd somehow made it."

His voice trailed off for a moment as he glanced down at his own bandaged shoulder. "But I didn't know what to do next. I'm sure we all thought the snake had to be the dungeon boss. If not, we were doomed anyway if something stronger showed up."

Jasper chimed in, his voice rough but spirited. "I was in pretty bad shape too. Kept coughing up blood and my ribs... man, they hurt like hell. But I managed to get up with a bit of help from Mi'kael here." He nodded towards Mi'kael with a wry smile.

"We gathered everyone," Mi'kael continued, "Tony, with his knee out of joint, Layla, barely breathing, and you, Z." His voice was calm, but the weight of the ordeal was palpable in his words. The group listened intently, each wrapped in their thoughts, the memories of the battle still fresh and haunting.

The green orb continued to glow, a silent witness to their conversation…..

"After we made sure everyone was still breathing, we started moving towards the deeper part of the snake's den. Tony came around, which made things a bit easier despite his limp."

His eyes briefly closed as he recalled the ordeal. "My vision was fading, and I felt unbearably cold, despite the heat and humidity. "I kept thinking I might black out any second. But Tony kept saying the serpent had to be the dungeon boss, that the core would be further inside."

Tony interjected, "Yeah, I've heard the dungeon core doesn't just pop up where you defeat the boss. It's usually at the dungeon's end, at least that's what the other people from Giovanni's guild told me"

Mi'kael nodded, then added, "Just when I thought my legs would give out, we saw it – a faint green glow in the distance. It got brighter as we approached. And with it came this... this soothing energy. With Jasper's help, I somehow kept moving. Alfred and Tony were carrying Xander and Layla. These two couldn't stop bickering the whole way."

Mi'kael's face grew serious. "About 500 meters from the exit, when the green light was getting bigger, and we could all feel its energy, that's when we ran into something else."

Mi'kael's tone turned somber as he recounted their encounter. "We ran into another snake, much smaller than the one we fought, but we were in no shape to even think about fighting," he began. "The thing was slow, bloated, and had cuts all over. It looked like it had just eaten. You could see the outlines of bodies in its stomach... two bodies."

Tony chimed in with a gruff edge to his voice, "There were a couple of machetes nearby, probably belonging to those two. Those thugs... they ditched us and met their end in the belly of a snake. Can't say I feel sorry for them."

Mi'kael gave a slight nod, "It just slithered away, fortunately. It wasn't interested in picking a fight after its meal."

Jasper, trying to lighten the mood, joked, "Must've been the daddy snake, eh?" He grinned, trying to lighten the mood"

Layla, with a curious look, asked, "Why weren't there any father salamanders among those we fought then?"

Jasper laughed, "Salamanders are cannibals, Probably the mother ate the father. Nature's brutal that way."

Mi'kael picked up the story again. "After that encounter, we finally reached the exit. It turned out we were in an actual cave system the whole time, not just some dungeon." His voice carried a mix of relief and disbelief.

He looked around at the group, his tone reflective. "When we reached that green orb, it began to pulse, and this... energy enveloped us all. My wound started healing by itself. It was unbelievable.

Jasper chimed in enthusiastically, "Yeah, it was wild! Felt like every bruise and crack just patched up in seconds."

Continuing, Mi'kael said, "It was a relief to see Xander's bleeding stop. Though Tony's knee still needs proper medical attention." His eyes moved towards Tony, who was managing a slight limp.

"Definitely gonna need a chiropractor for this one," Tony grumbled, though there was a hint of humor in his voice.

Mi'kael concluded, "That's about everything. The cave sealed itself, which was weird. But then this," he gestured towards the distortion near the orb, "opened up."

"That's a nexus portal, similar to the one we used to get in here. Opens back up after a dungeon's cleared. But this whole setup... it's off. This feels more like a Rank F dungeon, not a zero. Looks like Giovanni played us, but why….." His voice trailed off, tinged with bitterness.

"We didn't leave because we wanted to make sure you all were awake first. Jasper scouted ahead, and there's an entire forest out there. Rich and lush." Mi'kael pointed at the edge of the hill.

Jasper interjected with a hint of awe, "It's like stepping into another world, really."

Listening to all this, Xander suddenly felt a wave of dizziness wash over him. His head spun, and he stumbled. Jasper quickly caught him, concern etched on his face. "You okay, Xander?"

"Yeah... yeah, I'm okay," Xander managed, trying to steady himself. "Might still be reeling from that blast. Got a bit of it myself." He tried to laugh it off, but his voice was shaky.

Mi'kael looked around the group, a sense of realization in his eyes. "You all feel it, right? That strength? It's like what that guy on Giovanni's bus was talking about. I feel stronger somehow." The group nodded in agreement, a collective sense of newfound power among them.

Xander nodded too, but internally he was grappling with mixed feelings.

"I do feel stronger, but at the same time, weaker. My head's spinning, and I'm unusually hot. I feel sick, this can't just be an aftereffect of the fight, can it?" he wondered silently.

Jasper took over the conversation, his voice laced with curiosity. "After we absorbed that weird energy, the orb's glow dimmed a lot. It's still bright, but nothing like before."

"I don't know much about dungeon cores," Tony admitted, rubbing his chin thoughtfully, "but I've heard some dungeons have special cores. And I think we're supposed to be able to see some sort of status window after our initiation? "

Mi'kael interrupted, "Enough of this place. I'm sure we've all had our fill. Let's figure the rest out once we're out of here." He glanced around. "Everyone ready to leave through the nexus portal?"

There was a unanimous agreement, and Xander, despite feeling nauseous, gave a weak nod.

As the group approached the portal, Xander felt even more light-headed than before. The further he stepped from the green orb, the worse his condition got. Regardless, he did well to hide his expressions.

Layla mused aloud, "I wonder what's beyond this mountain?"

Tony replied with a grimace, "Whatever it is, I don't want to find out. Lost two friends in this godforsaken hellhole. Not exactly fond of it."

Standing before the portal, Jasper volunteered to go first.

Tony couldn't help but comment, "Can't tell if the kid's brave or just plain dumb."

Layla chuckled at Tony's remark, lightening the mood slightly.

One by one, they stepped through the portal. Xander was the last person to go through, leaving behind the trials of the harrowing dungeon…..
