Chapter 17 - Chapter Seventeen: Among the Outer Disciples

The morning air was crisp as Li Shen stepped out of the pavilion for what would likely be the last time as an inner trainee.

For two years, this place had been his world, his prison and his refuge. It was where he had learned to fight, to endure, and to survive. But now, that chapter had come to an end.

He did not look back.

His steps were calm and steady as he made his way down the stone path leading toward the outer disciple grounds. The further he walked, the more the atmosphere changed. The quiet elegance of the pavilion slowly gave way to something far more lively, voices, movement, the sound of disciples training and sparring in the open courtyards.

This was no longer a place of isolation.

This was where competition truly began.

"…Observe carefully," Dao's voice echoed within his mind. "This is where your foundation will either elevate you… or expose your weakness."

Li Shen's gaze remained forward. "…I understand."

As he entered the outer disciple area, several gazes immediately turned toward him. Some were curious. Others indifferent. A few… carried faint hostility.

News of the trial had already spread.

More importantly

So had his name.

"That's him…"

"The one who ranked high before the trial ended…"

"I heard something strange happened in the forest…"

Whispers followed him, but Li Shen paid them no attention.

Instead, he focused inward.

Before the trial, he had been at the Ninth Stage of Body Refinement, the absolute peak of that realm.

Now

He closed his eyes briefly.

His Qi flowed through his body with a smoothness he had never experienced before. It was denser. More refined. Every cycle felt complete, without leakage or instability.

Yet

It had not transformed into true Qi Gathering.

"I am still in the Ninth Stage of Body Refinement," Li Shen said internally.

"Yes," Dao replied. "But your foundation has been refined. You are no longer comparable to those of the same realm."

Li Shen understood.

Though his realm had not changed, his strength had.

"…You are standing at the threshold of Qi Gathering," Dao continued. "Do not break through yet."

Li Shen's eyes narrowed slightly. "…Why?"

"Because your breakthrough must be perfect," Dao said. "Not rushed. Not flawed."

Li Shen accepted that without question.

If Dao was right, and so far, it had always been

then his next step would define everything.

A voice suddenly interrupted his thoughts.

"So you're Li Shen?"

Li Shen turned slightly.

A young man stood a few steps away, arms crossed casually. He had a relaxed posture, but his sharp eyes revealed a careful observer. Unlike the others, his gaze held only interest.

"…Who are you?" Li Shen asked.

"Zhao Feng," the young man replied with a faint grin. "Outer Disciple. Same as you now."

Li Shen gave a small nod.

Zhao Feng studied him for a moment longer before speaking again. "You've caused quite a stir," he said. "Ending the trial early… not something you see every day."

"I didn't end it," Li Shen replied calmly.

Zhao Feng chuckled. "Maybe not directly. But you were at the center of it."

Li Shen didn't deny it.

Zhao Feng pushed himself off the wall and stepped closer. "Anyway," he said, "you'll want to get familiar with this place quickly."

He gestured toward the surrounding buildings.

"This is where all outer disciples live. No special treatment. No protection. Just strength."

Li Shen followed his gaze.

The buildings were simple

rough stone, minimal space, nothing compared to the pavilion.

But he didn't mind.

"This is fine," he said.

Zhao Feng raised an eyebrow slightly, as if surprised by the lack of complaint. Then he nodded.

"Good attitude," he said. "You'll need it."

They began walking toward the residential area together.

"Let me give you some advice," Zhao Feng continued. "Out here, reputation doesn't mean much. Strength does."

Li Shen glanced at him briefly.

"If you're weak, people will test you. Push you. Step on you," Zhao Feng said. "If you're strong…"

A faint smirk formed on his lips.

"…they'll think twice."

Li Shen understood immediately.

This wasn't a place for quiet growth.

It was a place where strength had to be proven.

They entered one of the stone buildings. Inside, the space was divided into small living sections. Simple beds. Bare essentials.

Nothing more.

Li Shen set his belongings down without hesitation.

Zhao Feng leaned against the doorway. "There's going to be a gathering later today," he said. "New outer disciples. They'll probably rank us or test us again."

Li Shen's eyes sharpened slightly. "So soon?"

Zhao Feng shrugged. "That's how it works here."

A brief silence followed.

"That's fine," Li Shen said.

Zhao Feng studied him carefully. "…You're confident."

Li Shen sat down slowly, closing his eyes as he felt the steady circulation of his Qi.

"I know where I stand," he replied.

And it was the truth.

Though he was still in the Ninth Stage of Body Refinement

He was no longer bound by it.

Not in the way others were.

Zhao Feng let out a quiet breath, then smiled faintly. "Alright," he said. "I'll be looking forward to seeing what you can do."

Li Shen didn't respond.

But deep within him, he knew his path ahead was opening wider.

And soon

Everyone here would realize just how different Li Shen had become.
