Chapter 16 - Chapter Sixteen: A New Path Begins

Morning light filtered softly through the thin curtains of the pavilion, casting a calm glow across the room. Outside, the Azure Cloud Pavilion remained as serene as ever, birds chirping, disciples moving about their routines, unaware that something within its walls had fundamentally changed.

Li Shen sat cross-legged on his bed, his posture steady, his breathing slow and controlled. To any observer, he looked no different than before. But inside

Everything was different.

"…Focus."

Dao's voice echoed within his mind, calm yet commanding.

Li Shen closed his eyes fully, letting his senses turn inward. For the past few hours since waking, Dao had not allowed him a moment of rest. There were no celebrations, no explanations beyond what was necessary. Only training.

Relentless, precise training.

"Your previous cultivation," Dao continued, "was crude. Inefficient. Full of wasted effort."

Li Shen didn't argue.

After everything he had experienced, he understood one thing clearly, Dao's existence was far beyond anything he could comprehend. Questioning without understanding would only slow him down.

"Circulate your Qi," Dao instructed. "But not the way you were taught."

Li Shen took a slow breath, guiding the faint streams of Qi within his body. Instinctively, he began following the familiar pathways he had practiced for two years.

"Stop."

The command hit instantly.

"That path is flawed," Dao said. "It leaks energy at every turn. Reverse it."

Li Shen frowned slightly. Reverse it?

"That's impossible," he said quietly. "Qi flows naturally in one direction. Forcing it backward could damage my meridians."

"Correct," Dao replied calmly. "For ordinary cultivators."

A brief pause.

"You are no longer ordinary."

Li Shen hesitated.

Then, slowly

He shifted his control.

Instead of allowing the Qi to flow outward through his established pathways, he pulled it inward, forcing it against its natural direction. Instantly, a sharp pain shot through his body.

His breathing faltered.

"Maintain it," Dao said.

Li Shen gritted his teeth, sweat forming along his forehead. The pain intensified, spreading through his meridians like fire. His body trembled slightly, resisting the unnatural flow.

"It's tearing my channels apart," he muttered.

"No," Dao corrected. "It is breaking them."

Li Shen's eyes snapped open slightly. "…What?"

"Your current meridians are inadequate," Dao explained. "They were shaped through flawed cultivation. If you continue using them, your growth will always be limited."

The pressure increased.

"So we will destroy them," Dao said, as if stating something simple.

"And rebuild them."

Li Shen's body shook violently as the Qi continued forcing its way backward, clashing against the natural flow. The pain was unbearable, far worse than any training he had endured before.

"Endure," Dao said.

There was no sympathy in the voice.

Only expectation.

Li Shen clenched his fists tightly, forcing his mind to remain focused. He had faced death. He had endured something far worse than pain.

This

He would survive.

A low groan escaped his lips as the energy surged again, violently breaking through another section of his meridians. It felt as though his body was being torn apart from the inside.

But beneath the pain, something else emerged.

A strange clarity.

The broken pathways did not remain empty. As they shattered, a new flow began to form, denser, more refined, carrying a faint trace of that golden energy he had felt before.

This was different... Stronger.

"Good," Dao said.

Li Shen barely heard him.

His entire focus was on enduring.

Time lost meaning.

Minutes passed or perhaps hours.

Eventually

The pain began to subside.

Slowly.

Until all that remained was a deep, aching exhaustion.

Li Shen's body slumped slightly, his breathing heavy but stable. The violent storm within him had calmed, leaving behind something entirely new.

"…It's different," he whispered.

"Yes," Dao replied. "Now, circulate it."

Li Shen obeyed.

This time, the Qi moved smoothly, far smoother than before. It flowed through his body with a quiet strength, no longer leaking, no longer unstable. Every cycle felt complete. Perfect.

His eyes widened slightly.

"…This is…"

"The foundation of your new path," Dao said.

Li Shen took a slow breath, feeling the changes within him. His body felt lighter, yet stronger. His senses sharper.

More importantly

His control had deepened.

"…What is this method called?" he asked.

There was a brief pause.

"I don't remember " Dao said. "But I am sure, no one in this world has ever practiced it."

Li Shen fell silent.

A path unknown, a power unseen.

And yet, It was now his.

Before he could speak again, footsteps approached from outside the pavilion.

Li Shen's gaze shifted toward the door.

"Li Shen," a familiar voice called.

It was her.

His teacher.

"Enter," Li Shen replied, his voice steady.

The door slid open, revealing the woman who had first brought him into this world of cultivation. Her calm gaze swept across him, pausing briefly as if sensing something unusual.

"…You've woken," she said.

"Yes."

She stepped closer, studying him more carefully now. There was a slight shift in her expression,

subtle, but noticeable.

"…Something has changed," she said.

Li Shen held her gaze.

"…I've improved."

It wasn't a lie.

But it wasn't the truth either.

She remained silent for a moment longer before nodding slightly.

"The trial has ended," she said. "Early."

"I know," Li Shen replied.

Her eyes narrowed slightly. "…You know?"

Li Shen didn't answer directly.

Instead, he asked, "What happens now?"

She studied him for a moment longer, then spoke.

"The top fifty will still be selected based on what was gathered before the trial ended," she said. "Despite the interruption, your performance was… exceptional."

A pause.

"You have been accepted as an Outer Disciple."

Li Shen remained calm, though a quiet sense of progress settled within him.

"I see."

"But," she continued, her tone shifting slightly, "there will be further evaluation."

Her gaze sharpened.

"The elders have taken interest in what happened in the forest."

Li Shen's expression didn't change.

But inside he understood.

The consequences had begun.

"…I'm ready," he said.

She held his gaze for a moment longer before nodding.

"Good."

As she turned to leave, she paused briefly at the doorway.

"…Be careful, Li Shen," she said quietly.

Then she was gone.

Silence returned once more.

"…They suspect something," Li Shen said internally.

"Yes," Dao replied. "And they will continue to watch you."

After a slight pause.

"Good."

Li Shen frowned slightly. "…Good?"

"Pressure creates growth," Dao said calmly. "Let them watch."

A faint stillness settled within Li Shen as he absorbed those words.

Then, slowly

A small, almost imperceptible smile formed on his lips.

"…Then I'll give them something worth watching."

Dao remained silent.

But it did not disagree.
