Chapter 37 - Into the Trap

Some places don't feel right.

Not because of what you see—

But because of what you don't.

The coordinates led them out of the city.

Farther than expected.

Beyond the reach of noise.

Beyond the illusion of control.

An abandoned industrial zone.

Cold.

Silent.

Forgotten.

Daniel Hayes stepped out of the car first.

His eyes scanned everything.

Every shadow.

Every movement.

Nothing.

Which made it worse.

Emily Carter followed.

Calm.

But her eyes—

Sharp.

Alexander Knight arrived last.

Unhurried.

Almost amused.

"Feels like a trap," he said.

Daniel didn't look at him.

"It is," he replied.

Silence settled between them.

Because none of them came here expecting safety.

The building stood ahead.

Dark.

Empty.

Or at least—

It looked that way.

"Stay sharp," Emily said.

No one responded.

They didn't need to.

Inside—

The air was colder.

Dust untouched.

No sound.

No signs of life.

Yet—

Something felt off.

Daniel moved first.

Slow.

Measured.

Every step controlled.

Emily followed close behind.

Alexander—

A few steps back.

Watching everything.

"This isn't random," Emily whispered.

Daniel nodded.

"No," he said.

A pause.

"It's staged."

The deeper they moved—

The quieter it became.

Too quiet.

Then—

They found it.

A room.

Different from the rest.

Clean.

Prepared.

At the center—

A single screen.

Already on.

They stopped.

Because this—

Was expected.

"You came."

Evelyn's voice filled the room.

Soft.

Controlled.

Emily stepped forward.

"End this," she said.

A pause.

Then—

A faint laugh.

"You still think this is something that can end," Evelyn replied.

The screen flickered.

And she appeared.

Not physically.

But close enough.

"You brought both of them," Evelyn continued.

Her eyes moved between them.

"Good."

Alexander stepped forward.

"You wanted us here," he said.

Evelyn tilted her head slightly.

"Of course I did."

Silence.

Because now—

There was no doubt.

"This is your trap," Daniel said.

Evelyn smiled.

"No," she replied.

A pause.

"This is your decision."

The room shifted.

Not visibly—

But something changed.

Locks engaged.

Doors sealed.

Lights dimmed.

Emily's eyes snapped toward the exit.

"We're locked in," she said.

Alexander exhaled slowly.

"Finally," he murmured.

Daniel stepped forward.

"What do you want?" he demanded.

Evelyn's expression didn't change.

"You," she said.

Silence.

Because that—

Wasn't an answer.

"I've been watching all three of you," she continued.

A pause.

"Your choices. Your limits."

Her gaze sharpened.

"And now…"

The screen split.

Three paths appeared.

Each leading deeper into the facility.

"One of you walks forward," she said.

A pause.

"The others stay."

Silence.

Because this—

Was familiar.

Another test.

"And if we don't?" Emily asked.

Evelyn's voice softened slightly.

"Then no one leaves."

Tension exploded.

Immediate.

Daniel stepped forward.

"I'll go," he said.

Emily turned sharply.

"No," she said.

Alexander smiled faintly.

"Predictable," he muttered.

Daniel ignored him.

"This ends with me," he said.

Emily stepped in front of him.

"No," she said again.

A pause.

"She wants you to think that."

Daniel's voice hardened.

"And what do you think she wants?" he asked.

Emily held his gaze.

"Control," she said.

A beat.

"And right now—you're giving it to her."

Silence.

Because that—

Was true.

Alexander stepped closer.

"Both of you are wrong," he said.

They turned toward him.

"She doesn't care who goes," he continued.

A pause.

"She cares what it does to the others."

Silence.

Because that—

Changed everything.

Evelyn's voice returned.

"Time is running out," she said.

The lights flickered.

The building hummed.

Pressure rising.

Emily exhaled slowly.

Then—

Stepped forward.

"I'll go," she said.

Daniel grabbed her arm.

"No," he said.

Emily didn't look at him.

"This is my fight too," she said.

Daniel's grip tightened.

"It's not worth it," he said.

That—

Stopped her.

Because those words—

Carried something else.

Something deeper.

Emily turned.

Looked at him.

Really looked.

"For you?" she asked quietly.

Silence.

Because now—

This wasn't about the mission.

Daniel didn't answer.

And that—

Was the answer.

Alexander watched them.

For once—

Not smiling.

Because this—

Was real.

Evelyn's voice cut through again.

"Decide," she said.

The three paths flickered.

Waiting.

Emily pulled her arm free.

Stepped forward.

"No more hesitation," she said.

And then—

She chose.

She walked into the middle path.

The door slammed shut behind her.

Silence.

Heavy.

Daniel stood frozen.

Too late.

Alexander exhaled slowly.

"Well," he said,

"That's going to be interesting."

Inside the darkness—

Emily Carter walked alone.

And for the first time—

She didn't know what was waiting.

💬 Did Emily make the right choice… or just walk into her own destruction?

And be honest—who should have gone instead?
