Chapter 9 - Too close to ignore

CHAPTER NINE: Too Close to Ignore

The car was silent.

Too silent.

Chidimma sat in the passenger seat, her hands resting on her lap, her mind still trying to process everything that had just happened.

Vanessa.

The trap.

Julian showing up.

Right on time.

She glanced at him.

His jaw was tight, his grip firm on the steering wheel, his eyes focused on the road.

But she could feel it—

He was angry.

Very angry.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

His voice broke the silence.

Calm.

But controlled anger sat beneath it.

Chidimma looked away.

"I didn't think it was necessary," she replied.

Julian let out a short, dry laugh.

"Not necessary?" he repeated. "You received a suspicious message, went to an unknown place alone, and you didn't think it was necessary to tell me?"

She frowned.

"I can take care of myself."

"I know you can," he said sharply. "But that doesn't mean you should do everything alone."

That hit differently.

"I didn't want to drag you into it," she said quietly.

Julian's grip on the steering wheel tightened.

"You're already in it," he replied. "Whether you like it or not."

Silence fell again.

But this time—

It wasn't just tension.

It was something deeper.

The car suddenly stopped.

Chidimma looked around.

They weren't at the office.

Or her house.

"Why did you stop?" she asked.

Julian didn't answer immediately.

He turned off the engine.

Then turned to face her.

Fully.

"You need to start trusting me," he said.

Her heart skipped.

"Trust you?" she repeated softly. "After everything?"

Julian's expression shifted.

Less anger.

More pain.

"I know I don't deserve it," he said. "But I'm asking anyway."

Chidimma stared at him.

Searching his face.

Looking for lies.

But all she saw was something she hadn't seen in a long time.

Sincerity.

"You hurt me, Julian," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

"I know."

"You left without a word."

"I know."

"You made me feel like I meant nothing."

His eyes softened.

"That was never true."

Her chest tightened.

"Then why does it still feel like it?" she asked.

That question hung in the air.

Heavy.

Real.

Julian leaned slightly closer.

Not too close.

But close enough for her to feel his presence.

"For two years," he said quietly, "I've lived with that regret."

Her breath caught.

"I thought staying away was protecting you," he continued. "But all it did was hurt you… and me."

Chidimma's eyes filled slightly, but she held herself together.

"You don't get to come back and fix everything in one day," she said.

"I'm not trying to," he replied. "I just don't want to lose you again."

Her heart skipped again.

And this time—

It was harder to ignore.

They were closer now.

Closer than they had been in years.

The tension between them wasn't just pain anymore.

It was something else.

Something stronger.

Julian's gaze dropped briefly to her lips.

Then back to her eyes.

Chidimma noticed.

And her breath hitched.

For a moment—

Everything around them faded.

No Vanessa.

No father.

No past.

Just them.

But then—

She pulled back.

Quickly.

As if waking up from something dangerous.

"This is a mistake," she said, her voice slightly unsteady.

Julian frowned.

"Why?"

"Because nothing has changed," she replied. "Your father still hates me. Vanessa is still in your life. And I'm still the girl who got hurt."

His expression hardened slightly.

"You're not that girl anymore."

"But I still remember everything," she said.

Silence.

Then slowly—

Julian nodded.

"I understand," he said.

But the look in his eyes said otherwise.

He wasn't giving up.

Not this time.

"I'll take you home," he added, starting the car again.

Chidimma didn't argue.

She just looked out the window.

But deep down—

Her heart was no longer as guarded as before.

Because no matter how much she tried to deny it…

Being close to him again—

Still felt like home.
