Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: The Thing in the Dark

The shadows were changing.

Kael noticed it slowly at first.

Subtly.

Like something shifting just beyond the edge of perception.

He took a step forward.

The ground—if it even was ground—didn't make a sound.

But the darkness did.

It moved.

Not randomly.

Not like smoke drifting in the wind.

It bent… toward him.

Pulled inward, like he was the center of something unseen.

Kael stopped walking.

His eyes narrowed.

"…You're reacting to me."

His voice didn't echo.

It was swallowed.

Devoured before it could exist.

A strange pressure settled in the air.

Heavy.

Ancient.

Like something had been here long before him… and had been waiting.

Then—

A ripple.

It spread across the darkness like a stone dropped into black water.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Unnatural.

Kael's body tensed instantly.

Every instinct screamed.

Not fear—

Recognition.

Danger.

A sound followed.

Faint.

Wet.

Wrong.

Like something dragging itself through a place it didn't belong.

Kael turned.

Slowly.

Carefully.

At first—nothing.

Just shadows.

Endless, shifting, breathing shadows.

Then—

A shape peeled itself out of the darkness.

It didn't walk forward.

It formed forward.

Humanoid.

But broken.

Its limbs were too long, joints bending in ways that didn't make sense. Its body flickered, phasing between solid and nothing—like reality couldn't decide if it existed.

Its face—

There wasn't one.

Just a hollow indentation.

A void where identity should be.

Kael didn't move.

Didn't breathe.

The creature tilted its head.

As if studying him.

Then—

It noticed him.

The shift was instant.

Violent.

Its body snapped into focus—

And it lunged.

Too fast.

Kael's mind couldn't keep up.

But his body did.

He stepped back—

And something answered.

The shadows beneath his feet erupted.

A tendril of darkness shot upward—sharp, fluid, alive—and collided with the creature mid-lunge.

Impact.

Silence—

Then a scream.

Not from a mouth.

Not from a throat.

From everywhere.

The sound scraped against Kael's mind, like something trying to tear its way inside.

The creature convulsed.

Its body destabilized, flickering violently.

Like it was being rejected.

Kael stared at his hand.

The darkness coiled around his fingers.

Responsive.

Hungry.

"What… is this…?"

The creature lunged again.

More desperate this time.

More unstable.

Kael's hesitation vanished.

He pulled.

The shadows obeyed instantly.

Not like a tool.

Like an extension.

They surged forward—

Wrapped around the creature—

And tightened.

The screaming intensified.

Reality itself seemed to distort around them.

The creature's form began to collapse inward.

Not destroyed.

Not killed.

Consumed.

The darkness devoured it piece by piece.

Until—

Nothing remained.

Silence returned.

Heavier than before.

Kael stood still.

His heart pounded once.

Twice.

Then slowed.

Something changed.

Inside him.

A presence.

Not external.

Not watching.

Awakening.

Then—

A voice.

Not heard.

Understood.

[You have devoured a Fragment of the Hollow.]

[Shadow Affinity increased.]

[Path… partially awakened.]

Kael's breath caught.

"…A Path?"

The words felt familiar.

Like something he should understand—but didn't.

The darkness around him pulsed.

Closer now.

More responsive.

Alive.

Kael looked at his hand again.

Then into the endless void around him.

For the first time since arriving—

He didn't feel lost.

He felt…

Grounded.

A faint smile formed on his lips.

Small.

Cold.

Not relief.

Hunger.

Because something deep inside him whispered—

"More."
