Chapter 4 – A Strange Observation
The bell for lunch rang, echoing through the long hallways of HVIS. Students poured into the courtyard, the usual chaos of chatter, laughter, and footsteps swelling to a familiar roar. The sun was high, casting warm stripes across the polished tiles and neatly trimmed grass, and for once, the world felt almost serene. Almost.
Except for Mark Keifer Watson.
He leaned against the edge of the library entrance, hands in pockets, observing the crowd with a practiced calm that betrayed the storm of thoughts inside his mind.
His eyes were drawn—again—to JJ.
She was sitting on a low stone wall, far from the noise, alone. Her bag rested at her side, knees slightly bent, fingers idly playing with the edge of her notebook. She didn't laugh with the other students. She didn't try to join any group. She didn't even glance toward the courtyard games. She just… existed, quietly observing.
Keifer frowned.
Most students didn't sit alone in Section E. Especially new students. They either tried to blend in or loudly asserted themselves, desperate to leave an impression. But not JJ.
And what unsettled him even more… were the two boys from Section A.
Aries Fernandez and Percy Mariano.
Keifer knew them both well—too well. They were his closest friends. And yet, here they were, standing a few meters away, eyes constantly flicking toward JJ, their expressions unreadable. They weren't calling out to her, they weren't walking over—they weren't even talking to each other. They were merely… watching.
Keifer's brow furrowed.
Why?
What was going on between them and JJ?
He narrowed his eyes, analyzing every subtle movement. Percy shifted slightly, brushing a lock of hair from his forehead. Aries leaned against a tree, hands in pockets, gaze unwavering. Neither was making a move to approach her. Yet neither could hide the tension that wrapped around their posture like an invisible rope.
Keifer's mind raced.
"She's connected to them somehow…" he muttered under his breath. "But why? And why haven't they mentioned her before?"
His curiosity was pricked, but so was something deeper: suspicion.
Lunch in Section E
By the time he reached the cafeteria, Section E was already gathered around their usual table. Cin was flipping through her notes. Felix and Rory were debating the proper technique for a physics problem. Denzel and Calix were engaged in a quiet chess match across from Eman and David.
Keifer slid into his seat, eyes scanning the group.
"Something's… weird," he muttered, mostly to himself.
"What?" Cin asked without looking up.
Keifer's gaze returned to JJ, who was now walking toward the library, her steps slow and deliberate.
"They… I mean, JJ," he corrected, "she isn't… normal. She's too calm. Too… unreadable. And I don't know what to make of her."
Felix raised an eyebrow. "She's a transfer student. What did you expect? Screaming and flailing?"
Keifer shook his head. "No. That's not it. It's… her presence. Something about her doesn't fit."
Rory tilted his head. "You've known her for two days, and you're already overthinking her."
Keifer leaned back, studying his friends carefully. "Two days? Maybe. But there's something else."
Cin finally looked up. "What else?"
Keifer paused, lowering his voice. "I saw Aries and Percy. Watching her. And… not in a friendly way. Not exactly. But… protective. Like they know something about her. And it's not just casual concern. There's something… I don't understand."
Endrix snorted. "Protective friends? Or jealous ones?"
Keifer ignored him. "No. It's deeper than that. She's… hiding something. And it's bigger than any normal school drama."
David frowned. "You sound obsessed."
Keifer narrowed his eyes. "I'm not obsessed. I'm… curious. And cautious. That girl is trouble. In ways I can't explain."
The table fell silent, each member of Section E exchanging glances.
The Library Encounter
After lunch, Keifer made his way to the library. He needed to observe. Needed to understand.
JJ was there, as usual, by the window. Sunlight pooled around her like a halo, illuminating her features. She was browsing the shelves quietly, her movements deliberate.
Keifer approached the same row of books, his hand reaching for the same thick, dusty volume on comparative literature.
Their hands brushed.
"Ah," Keifer said, stepping back slightly, "you seem very confident for someone who just transferred."
JJ didn't flinch. Her gaze met his calmly.
"Confidence and silence are different things," she replied. Her voice was soft, even, but it carried a weight that made Keifer pause.
"Most new students try to impress this class," he continued, leaning slightly against the shelf.
JJ shrugged without looking flustered. "I'm not here to impress anyone."
That irritated him—more than he expected. Her calmness, her deliberate distance, her unreadable expression… it made him want to push, to provoke, to make her react. But there was something else too. Something he couldn't name.
She's hiding something, he thought again.
A few students entered the library, glancing at the strange tension. Cin and Felix peeked from a corner, whispering.
"Keifer… are you… talking to her?" Rory muttered.
"Not exactly," Keifer said under his breath. "I'm… observing."
JJ finally turned toward him fully, one eyebrow slightly raised. "Observing?" she asked. "I didn't realize I was a subject of interest."
"You should get used to it," he said dryly. "Most people can't read you."
JJ's lips curved slightly, almost a smirk. "Good. I'd hate to be understood so easily."
Keifer felt a flicker of frustration—and admiration. She wasn't just a puzzle. She was a maze.
Section E's Whispering
Later, during self-study, Keifer gathered the group quietly.
"Section E," he said, voice low. "Listen. Something about JJ… it's off. She's calm, precise, quiet—but I've seen her interacting with others. She helps people in subtle ways, but she doesn't socialize. And there's a connection with Aries and Percy that doesn't make sense."
Felix leaned back. "She's a mystery. So what? Everyone has secrets."
Keifer shook his head. "No, this is different. It's like she's… calculating, or hiding something important. Something beyond school life."
Cin frowned. "You sound paranoid. Or obsessed."
Keifer leaned forward. "I'm telling you, watch her. Observe her. Don't interfere. Just… pay attention. There's more to JJ than we see."
Rory muttered, "You make her sound like a spy."
"Maybe she is," Keifer said dryly. "But I guarantee she's more than just a transfer student trying to survive Section E."
The group nodded hesitantly, tension filling the space.
Observing Her
From the library window, Keifer watched as JJ carefully arranged her notes. She didn't glance at anyone. She didn't react to the small sounds around her. She just… existed in her own bubble of calm.
And yet, there was one tiny detail that caught him: she always glanced at the clock on the wall, or sometimes out the window. Her eyes lingered on the courtyard, where sunlight shifted over the grass and pavement.
She's counting something, he thought. Waiting for someone? Or maybe… waiting for something to happen.
He frowned, trying to shake the thought.
Section E was loud, chaotic, predictable. JJ wasn't. And that unnerved him.
By the time the library bell rang, Keifer had made a decision: he needed to learn more.
Not because he liked her. Not yet.
But because JJ was a question he couldn't ignore.
And questions—especially ones that didn't fit neatly into his world—demanded answers.
