Chapter 19 - A Small Ray of Hope

The front door of Master Hikaru's house slid open with more force than usual.

"Yuna! Yuna! Yunaaa!" Hikaru's deep voice boomed through the house, filled with urgency and barely contained excitement.

Yuna came rushing from the inner room, her heart pounding. She had been anxiously waiting, pacing back and forth while Haru played quietly in the corner.

"Yes, Master Hikaru?!" she asked, eyes wide with worry and anticipation.

Hikaru stepped inside, his silver hair slightly disheveled from the long meeting. He looked at her with a rare, genuine smile breaking across his usually serious face.

"The rape charge has been dropped."

For a moment, Yuna stood completely still, as if the words hadn't fully registered. Then her eyes widened, and pure relief flooded her expression. A bright, almost disbelieving happiness erupted across her face.

"Really…?" she whispered, her voice cracking. "It's really gone?"

Hikaru nodded firmly. "Yes. The council could not ignore the new testimony about Kage and Shime. That false accusation has been officially removed from his record."

Yuna's hands flew to her mouth. Tears of relief instantly welled up in her eyes. She turned away slightly, trying to compose herself, but the joy and weight lifting off her chest were too strong to hide.

"Where is Kana?" she asked quickly, voice trembling with emotion. "Is he okay? Can I see him?"

Hikaru's smile faded a little. He placed a gentle hand on her shoulder.

"Only the rape charge was dropped, Yuna. The other charges still stand — desertion, hiding from the village for three years, and the killing of over a hundred people during that time. He will still be punished… but at least the worst stain on his name has been cleared."

Yuna's happiness dimmed, but it didn't disappear completely. She nodded slowly, processing the information.

"At least… at least that part is gone," she murmured. "He won't have to carry that shame anymore."

At that moment, Haru came running from the inner room, his little feet pattering loudly on the wooden floor.

"Yuna-sa! Yuna-sa!" he called excitedly, holding a small wooden toy Hikaru had given him earlier.

He stopped abruptly when he saw the tall, silver-haired man standing beside Yuna. Haru tilted his head, looking up with big, curious eyes.

"Yuna-sa… who is he?"

Master Hikaru crouched down to Haru's level, his expression softening into a warm, grandfatherly smile. He gently placed a large hand on the boy's head.

"I am Master Hikaru," he said kindly. "I was your brother Kanashimi's teacher. I trained him when he was a boy, just a little older than you. And now… I suppose I'm your grandfather too."

Haru's eyes sparkled with innocent wonder.

"Grandpa Hikaru…?" he repeated, testing the name. Then he smiled brightly and suddenly hugged Hikaru's leg. "You look strong! Just like brother!"

Hikaru let out a soft, warm laugh and patted Haru's back.

Yuna watched the interaction with a complicated but tender expression. Seeing Haru so easily accept this new "grandfather" made something inside her chest ache sweetly.

Yuna's inner thoughts:

He calls everyone family so easily…Even after everything he's seen.If only Kanashimi could see this right now…

Hikaru stood up, still holding Haru's small hand.

"Come, both of you. Let's eat something. You must be hungry after everything that's happened."

As they moved toward the dining area, Haru looked up at Yuna and asked innocently, "Yuna-sa, when is brother coming home? Grandpa Hikaru is here now. We can all live together!"

Yuna and Hikaru exchanged a quiet, heavy glance.

Yuna smiled softly and stroked Haru's hair.

"Soon, Haru… We're all trying our best to bring him home."

Master Hikaru looked at the small makeshift family forming in his house — the conflicted woman who was once his student's wife, and the innocent child who had lost almost everything.

He silently vowed to himself:

No matter how difficult the council makes it… I will not let this family break apart.

Outside, the village continued its normal morning routines.

But inside this quiet house, three hearts were slowly, carefully beginning to heal — one small, hopeful step at a time.

Detention Hall

The heavy iron door creaked open with a loud groan that echoed through the cold stone chamber.

Kanashimi, still bound and blindfolded, lifted his head slightly at the sound. His body was exhausted, but his senses remained sharp.

Footsteps — heavy, confident, and familiar — approached him.

A loud, familiar voice boomed through the room, breaking the oppressive silence.

"Oi, Kanashimi! You bastard… look at the sorry state you're in!"

The blindfold was suddenly yanked off. Kanashimi blinked against the dim lantern light.

Standing in front of him was a tall, muscular man with spiky brown hair, a scar across his left eyebrow, and a wide, cocky grin. He wore the uniform of a senior village fighter.

Hayate Takeda.

Kanashimi's eyes widened in genuine surprise.

"Hayate…?"

Hayate crouched down in front of him, arms resting on his knees, and let out a loud, dramatic sigh.

"Man… when they told me the traitor was back, I thought they were joking. But here you are, tied up like some criminal. You really went and became a legend, huh?"

Despite the pain, a small, tired smile appeared on Kanashimi's lips.

"…You haven't changed at all. Still loud as ever."

Hayate laughed heartily and punched Kanashimi's shoulder lightly — though even that small hit made the injured man wince.

"Of course I haven't changed! Someone has to stay the same while you go around becoming a runaway dad and secret big-shot fighter!"

He sat down cross-legged in front of Kanashimi, his expression turning more serious, though his tone remained energetic.

"I heard what happened. The council meeting… the dropped rape charge… all of it. You really went through hell these past three years, didn't you?"

Kanashimi leaned his head back against the stone wall, exhaling slowly.

"I did what I had to do to protect Haru. That's all."

Hayate scratched the back of his head, looking frustrated.

"You idiot… You could've contacted me. I would've helped you hide. I would've fought with you. Instead, you disappeared like a ghost and left everyone thinking you were some kind of monster."

He paused, then grinned again.

"But damn… raising a kid alone at seventeen? You really became a man, huh?"

Kanashimi looked down, his voice quiet.

"Haru is the only reason I'm still alive, Hayate. If it wasn't for him… I probably would have let them kill me years ago."

Hayate's grin faded. He stared at his old friend for a long moment, then suddenly punched the ground beside him.

"Dammit, Kana! Don't say shit like that! You think dying would solve anything? That little brother of yours needs you alive, you moron!"

He leaned in closer, lowering his voice.

"Look… things are messy right now. The elders are divided. Master Hikaru is fighting for you. And Yuna… she's different now. She brought you back alive. That says something."

Kanashimi smiled weakly.

"Yeah… she even took care of Haru. Called her 'Sister-in-law' and everything."

Hayate let out a loud laugh.

"That kid sounds hilarious! I need to meet him soon."

He stood up and patted Kanashimi's shoulder firmly.

"Listen. Don't give up. I'll come visit whenever I can. I'll sneak in food, information, whatever you need. Just stay alive, alright? We still have to drink together once you're out of these ropes."

Kanashimi nodded slowly, genuine warmth in his tired eyes.

"…Thanks, Hayate. For still treating me like a friend."

Hayate turned toward the door, then stopped and looked back with his usual cocky grin.

"Friends? Nah. You're my brother, dumbass. Always have been."

He gave one last wave before the guards closed the heavy door behind him.

Kanashimi leaned his head back against the wall, a small, pained but grateful smile on his face.

Kanashimi's inner thoughts:

Even after everything… some bonds never break.Thank you, Hayate…
