Evening had settled over the Hidden Village of Special Fighters. The sky was painted in deep oranges and purples as the floating lanterns began to glow brighter across the village paths.
Inside the Grand Discussion Chamber, all eleven elders had gathered once again. The atmosphere was heavy and solemn. Silver lanterns floated above the circular stone seats, casting long shadows across the floor.
Kanashimi was brought in once more. He was still bound at the wrists, but the blindfold had been removed. He knelt silently in the center of the circle, head slightly bowed, his body still weak from his injuries.
Elder Mizu struck his staff against the stone floor, calling the meeting to order.
"We have deliberated long and hard," he announced, his voice echoing through the chamber. "Kanashimi Oketo, the council has reached its decision regarding your punishment."
Everyone's attention focused on the young man in the center.
Elder Mizu continued:
"The charge of attempted violation has been dropped due to lack of conclusive evidence and new testimony. However, the crimes of desertion, hiding from the village for three years, and the killing of over one hundred individuals — regardless of their intentions — cannot be overlooked."
He paused, then declared the verdict clearly:
"Kanashimi Oketo will receive the following punishments:
Sealing of his voice for a period of one year. He will not be allowed to speak freely without permission from an elder. Sealing of the majority of his Special Arts. Only basic village techniques will remain accessible to him, and even those will be heavily restricted. He must serve the village for a minimum of five years in whatever capacity the council deems fit — likely as a supervised laborer or low-rank guardian. He will be stripped of all rank and privileges he once held as a fighter. He will live under the direct supervision of Master Hikaru and will not be allowed to roam freely without the presence of an approved elder, such as Master Hikaru himself."
A heavy silence filled the chamber.
Master Hikaru closed his eyes for a moment, then nodded slowly. He had expected something like this.
Kanashimi remained kneeling, expression calm despite the weight of the sentence. He simply bowed his head in acceptance.
Kanashimi's inner thoughts:
Sealed voice… sealed powers… five years of service…It's harsh… but it could have been worse. At least I'm alive. At least Haru won't grow up completely alone.
Elder Mizu looked at Kanashimi with stern eyes.
"Do you accept this judgment?"
Kanashimi nodded once, his voice quiet but steady.
"I accept."
Elder Fumiko spoke softly, "The child Haru will remain under Yuna's temporary care, as she has taken responsibility for him. He will live with Master Hikaru as well."
The meeting concluded shortly after.
As the guards led Kanashimi back toward the detention hall (he would be moved to Hikaru's house the next morning under supervision), Master Hikaru approached him briefly.
Hikaru placed a hand on his former student's shoulder and whispered:
"You survived the worst part. Now endure the rest with dignity. Haru and Yuna are waiting for you."
Kanashimi gave a small, tired nod.
Outside the Grand Hall, the village lights twinkled peacefully, unaware of the heavy decision that had just been made.
Meanwhile, at Master Hikaru's house…
Yuna was helping Haru wash his hands before dinner when a messenger arrived with the news of the verdict.
Yuna listened quietly, her expression complex. She looked down at Haru, who was humming happily while playing with a small wooden sword Hikaru had given him.
She gently stroked his hair.
Yuna's inner thoughts:
Sealed voice… restricted powers… five years of service…It's painful… but he's alive. And he'll be living here, under the same roof as us.Maybe… this is the beginning of something new.
Haru looked up at her with bright eyes.
"Yuna-sa, when is brother coming? I want to show him the sword Grandpa gave me!"
Yuna smiled softly and hugged him.
"Soon, Haru. Very soon."
The night deepened over the Hidden Village.
Punishment had been decided.
But for Kanashimi, Yuna, Haru, and the fragile new family forming around them… the real journey was only just beginning.
The next morning arrived with a quiet, heavy tension.
Two village guards escorted Kanashimi through the winding paths of the Hidden Village. His wrists were still bound with suppression ropes, and a fresh voice-sealing talisman glowed faintly on his throat. The seal was strict: he could only speak in the presence of elders who were higher in both age and rank than him, and even then, he could not ask for permission to speak — he had to wait until someone allowed it.
He walked slowly, every step painful from his still-healing wounds. His head was slightly lowered, eyes fixed on the ground.
They finally stopped in front of Master Hikaru's house.
The guards knocked once. The door slid open.
Master Hikaru stood there, tall and steady. Behind him, Yuna and Haru peeked out.
Haru's eyes lit up the moment he saw his brother.
"Big brother!!"
The little boy tried to run forward, but Yuna gently held him back, her expression a mix of relief and worry.
The guards bowed to Hikaru.
"Master Hikaru, as per the council's decision, Kanashimi Oketo is now under your direct supervision. He may not leave this house or roam freely without your presence or another approved elder. His voice is sealed — he may only speak when an elder of higher age and rank permits it, and he cannot request permission himself."
Hikaru nodded solemnly.
"I understand. Leave him to me."
The guards untied Kanashimi's wrists, gave one last respectful bow, and departed.
The moment they were gone, Haru broke free from Yuna's hold and ran straight into Kanashimi's arms.
"Brother! You're here! You're really here!"
Kanashimi dropped to one knee and hugged his little brother tightly, burying his face in Haru's messy hair. No words came out — the seal prevented him from speaking freely — but the way he held Haru said everything.
Kanashimi's inner thoughts:
Haru… my precious Haru…I can finally hold you again.Even if I can't speak… even if I'm trapped here… at least I'm with you.
Yuna stood a few steps away, watching them. Her eyes softened as she saw the pure relief and love between the two brothers. She stepped closer and placed a gentle hand on Haru's back.
"Haru, be careful. Your brother is still hurt."
Haru nodded but refused to let go, clinging to Kanashimi like a koala.
Master Hikaru watched the scene with quiet warmth in his eyes.
"Welcome home, Kanashimi," he said softly. "This house is now yours as well. You will live here under my supervision. You may not leave without me or another elder's accompaniment. Your voice seal is active — you can only speak when an elder older and higher in rank than you grants permission. You cannot ask for it yourself."
Kanashimi looked up at his master and gave a small, respectful nod. No words came, but his eyes conveyed deep gratitude.
Yuna stepped forward hesitantly. She looked at Kanashimi for a long moment, then spoke quietly.
"…You're here now. That's what matters."
Yuna's inner thoughts:
He looks so tired… so broken.Yet he's still smiling at Haru like nothing else matters.I don't know how to feel anymore… but I know I don't want to see him suffer like this.
Haru suddenly pulled back and looked at Kanashimi with big, excited eyes.
"Brother! Grandpa Hikaru said I can call him Grandpa! And Onee-chan is living here too! We're all together now!"
Kanashimi smiled softly and ruffled Haru's hair with his now-free hand. He wanted to say "I'm happy" or "I missed you," but no sound came out. Instead, he simply nodded and pulled Haru back into a gentle hug.
Hikaru watched them with a faint smile.
"Come inside. You need rest, Kanashimi. Yuna has prepared a room for you."
As they stepped into the house, Haru kept chattering happily, holding Kanashimi's hand tightly.
"Brother, when you get better, we can run again! And Grandpa will teach me fighting! And Onee-chan makes really good soup!"
Yuna glanced at Kanashimi, her expression complicated but softer than before.
Yuna's inner thoughts:
He can't even speak freely now…Yet he's looking at Haru with so much love.Maybe… this punishment is not just suffering.Maybe it's also a chance for all of us to heal.
The four of them — a broken fighter, a conflicted woman, an innocent child, and a wise old master — finally sat down together for the first meal as a strange, new family.
Outside, the village continued its daily life.
But inside this quiet house, a fragile hope had begun to take root.
Even if it was surrounded by seals, restrictions, and unspoken pain.
