Chapter 14 - Smile Like You Don’t Know

The plan was simple.

Too simple.

And that's what made it dangerous.

"Act normal."

Adrian's voice was calm as he adjusted his cufflinks.

Elena stood near the mirror, her reflection staring back at her.

Normal.

She almost laughed.

Nothing about this felt normal anymore.

"You want me to pretend nothing happened?" she asked.

"Yes."

"That's not realistic."

"It doesn't have to be."

She turned.

His gaze met hers instantly.

Sharp.

Focused.

Watching.

"It just has to be convincing."

Her chest tightened.

"And if I mess up?"

"You won't."

Of course.

That answer again.

The office felt different today.

Quieter.

But not empty.

Like something was waiting beneath the surface.

Elena walked in beside Adrian.

Steady.

Calm.

Controlled.

Just like he told her.

Eyes followed.

But this time—

She didn't avoid them.

She met them.

One by one.

Letting them see—

She wasn't shaken.

Good.

Because that's exactly what they needed to believe.

"Stay visible," Adrian said quietly.

"I thought I was supposed to stay close."

"You are."

A pause.

"But today…"

His gaze flickered slightly.

"They need to see you alone."

Her stomach dropped.

Alone.

"That's risky."

"Yes."

No denial.

No reassurance.

"Then why do it?"

His answer came without hesitation.

"Because they'll take the bait."

He walked away.

Just like that.

Leaving her standing there.

Alone.

Her pulse quickened.

But she didn't move.

Didn't hesitate.

Because she understood now—

This wasn't about comfort.

This was about control.

Minutes passed.

Nothing happened.

Too quiet.

Too still.

Then—

"Still standing?"

The voice came from behind her.

Familiar.

Unwelcome.

Daniel Hayes.

Elena turned slowly.

"I could say the same about you."

He smiled.

Easy.

Charming.

Dangerous.

"I heard about yesterday," he said.

Of course he did.

Everyone did.

"People talk," she replied.

"They do."

A pause.

"And sometimes… they're right."

Her chest tightened.

"You think I made a mistake."

"I think," he said carefully…

"You were made to look like one."

Her breath caught.

Interesting.

"And what makes you say that?" she asked.

He stepped closer.

Not too close.

Just enough.

"Because you don't look like someone careless."

Her pulse shifted.

"And you've been watching me?" she asked.

"Observing," he corrected.

Of course.

Everyone here observed.

No one trusted.

"Then you should know," she said…

"I'm not easy to read."

He smiled slightly.

"I like challenges."

That didn't sound good.

Silence stretched.

Then—

"I can help you."

There it was.

The offer.

Her fingers curled slightly.

"With what?" she asked.

"Understanding what's happening."

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

"And why would you do that?"

Daniel tilted his head.

"Because I don't like unfair games."

A lie.

Or worse—

A half-truth.

"And this one is unfair?" she asked.

"Very."

Silence.

Because she understood something now.

This wasn't help.

This was positioning.

"And what do you want in return?" she asked.

His smile didn't fade.

"Nothing… yet."

That was worse.

Much worse.

"Then I'm not interested."

She turned.

And walked away.

Because that was the plan.

Don't engage.

Don't react.

Don't trust.

"Careful, Elena."

She stopped.

Not because she wanted to.

Because something in his voice—

Changed.

"You're playing a game you don't understand."

She turned slightly.

"And you do?" she asked.

Daniel's eyes darkened.

"Better than you think."

A pause.

"Ask yourself something," he added.

Her chest tightened.

"Why did Laura disappear so fast?"

Her breath caught.

"People don't just vanish…"

A beat.

"…unless someone wants them to."

Silence.

Because that—

That wasn't part of the plan.

That wasn't something Adrian said.

That was something else.

Something dangerous.

"What are you implying?" she asked quietly.

Daniel stepped back slightly.

"I'm saying…"

A pause.

"You might be standing closer to the problem than you think."

Her heart skipped.

Because for the first time—

Doubt crept in.

Not about the situation.

About him.

And that—

That was the real trap.

Across the floor—

Behind the glass walls—

Adrian stood.

Watching.

Silent.

Still.

His gaze fixed on Elena.

Because he saw it.

The hesitation.

The shift.

The moment doubt entered her mind.

And for the first time—

Something dangerous surfaced in his expression.

Not anger.

Not control.

Something darker.

Because this—

This wasn't just about the enemy anymore.

This was about trust.

And someone—

Had just started breaking it.
