Chapter 15 - Tell Me the Truth

The doubt didn't go away.

It followed her.

Step by step.

Breath by breath.

Elena didn't stop walking until she reached his office.

Didn't knock.

Didn't hesitate.

She pushed the door open.

Adrian looked up.

Calm.

Too calm.

Like he had been expecting this.

"Close the door."

She did.

The sound echoed.

Sharp.

Final.

Silence filled the room.

But this time—

It wasn't controlled.

It was tense.

Unstable.

"You knew."

The words left her before she could stop them.

His gaze didn't change.

"Knew what?"

Her fingers curled slightly.

"About Laura."

A pause.

Then—

"Yes."

The answer came easily.

Too easily.

Her chest tightened.

"You knew she altered the file."

"Yes."

"You knew she set me up."

"Yes."

Each word hit harder than the last.

"And you still let me sign it."

Silence.

Not denial.

Not hesitation.

Just—

Silence.

That was enough.

Her heart dropped.

"You did."

Not a question.

A realization.

"I needed to see how you would respond," he said.

Her breath caught.

"So you used me."

"Yes."

No apology.

No explanation.

Just—

Truth.

Her chest tightened painfully.

"I could've been destroyed out there."

"You weren't."

"That's not the point!"

Her voice broke through the room.

Sharp.

Raw.

Real.

For the first time—

She raised her voice at him.

And for the first time—

He didn't interrupt.

"You stood there," she continued, her breathing uneven…

"And you watched."

Silence.

"Do you have any idea what that felt like?"

A pause.

Then—

"Yes."

The answer hit differently.

Because it wasn't defensive.

It wasn't cold.

It was—

Certain.

Her anger faltered for a second.

"What?" she whispered.

"I know exactly what it feels like."

His voice was lower now.

Quieter.

More dangerous.

"To be tested."

A pause.

"To be watched."

Another.

"To be thrown into something you don't understand…"

His gaze darkened.

"…and expected to survive anyway."

Silence.

Because suddenly—

This wasn't just about her anymore.

This was about him.

"You could've warned me," she said softly.

"I did."

Her brows pulled together.

"When?"

"I told you not to trust anyone."

Her chest tightened.

"That includes me."

The words landed.

Heavy.

Painfully real.

Silence stretched between them.

Not loud.

Not sharp.

Just—

Honest.

"Then what am I supposed to do?" she asked.

Her voice quieter now.

Less anger.

More… confusion.

"If I can't trust anyone—"

A pause.

"What do I hold onto?"

For the first time—

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

He just looked at her.

Long.

Careful.

Unreadable.

Then—

"You don't hold onto anything."

Her chest tightened.

"You stand on your own."

The words weren't cruel.

They weren't soft either.

They were—

Truth.

"And what about you?" she asked.

His gaze didn't waver.

"What about me?"

"Are you standing with me…"

A pause.

"…or just watching me?"

Silence.

Heavy.

Because this—

This was the real question.

Not about the contract.

Not about the game.

About him.

Seconds passed.

Then—

He stepped closer.

Not fast.

Not threatening.

But enough.

"Both."

Her breath caught.

"I'll stand with you when it matters."

A pause.

"And I'll watch…"

His voice lowered.

"…to make sure you don't fall."

The answer wasn't comforting.

But it wasn't empty either.

Elena held his gaze.

Because for the first time—

She understood something clearly.

He wasn't on her side.

Not completely.

But he wasn't against her either.

He was something in between.

And that—

That was far more dangerous.

"You don't make this easy," she said quietly.

"I'm not supposed to."

Of course.

A small, bitter smile touched her lips.

"Then I won't make it easy for you either."

Silence.

Then—

Something unexpected.

His lips curved slightly.

"Good."

The tension shifted again.

Not gone.

But sharper.

More balanced.

Because now—

This wasn't just his world.

It was hers too.

And she wasn't just surviving anymore.

She was pushing back.

But as she turned to leave—

Something stopped her.

A thought.

A question.

She turned back.

"One more thing."

His gaze lifted.

"What?"

Her chest tightened slightly.

"Why did you really choose me?"

Silence.

Long.

Heavy.

Because this time—

It wasn't about the contract.

It wasn't about convenience.

It was something else.

Something deeper.

Adrian looked at her.

And for a brief second—

Something flickered in his eyes.

Something she couldn't read.

Then—

It was gone.

"You were there."

The answer felt wrong.

Incomplete.

But she didn't push.

Because she understood something now.

He wasn't ready to tell the truth.

And maybe—

Neither was she.

But as she walked out of the room—

One thing became clear.

This wasn't just a game anymore.

This was something else.

Something deeper.

Something dangerous.

Because somewhere between trust and control—

Something had started to form.

And neither of them knew—

What it would become.
