Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: Phase Three

The air inside the Astra facility had changed completely. It was no longer just tense or dangerous; it felt controlled, as if something far more intelligent than anything they had faced before was now watching every movement, every breath. Aarav stood still for a moment, his eyes locked on the man in front of him. The presence of this new figure was entirely different from the one with black eyes. That man had felt chaotic, overwhelming, almost like a storm. But this one was precise, calm, and terrifying in a way that made it clear he was always in control.

Aarav's mind was still processing the words he had just heard. "Your beginning." Those words didn't feel like a threat. They felt like a fact. Something inevitable. Something already decided long before he even understood what was happening to him.

"Who are you?" Aarav asked again, this time with more force, trying to ground himself in the moment.

The man didn't rush his answer. He stepped forward slowly, his movements steady and measured, as if he had all the time in the world. "You've already heard my designation," he said in a calm, almost indifferent tone. "Subject A-01."

The words hit harder than expected. Aarav felt his breath tighten. A-01. The first. The origin. If Aarav was A-17, then this man was where everything had started.

Before Aarav could say anything else, Meera stepped forward, her voice sharper than before. "That's not possible," she said. "You were terminated."

The man glanced at her briefly, his expression unchanged. "Incorrect," he replied. "I was… upgraded."

That single word sent a chill through everyone in the room. Upgraded. Not destroyed. Not failed. Improved.

Raghav didn't wait any longer. Frustration and anger were already visible on his face. "I'm done listening," he said as flames ignited around his hands again, brighter and more intense than before. "We take him down now."

Aarav tried to stop him, but it was too late. Raghav charged forward, releasing a concentrated wave of fire directly at A-01. The flames surged across the room, filling the space with heat and light. For a brief moment, it looked like the attack would land.

But it didn't.

The fire stopped mid-air, bending unnaturally as if something invisible was controlling it. The flames twisted, compressed, and then vanished completely. A-01 hadn't even moved.

Raghav froze, confusion and disbelief written all over his face. "What…?"

A-01 raised his hand slightly, almost casually, and in the next instant Raghav was lifted off the ground without any visible force. There was no contact, no energy wave, nothing that could be seen. Yet the control was absolute. Raghav was slammed into the wall with brutal force, the impact echoing through the room.

Kabir reacted instantly. He vanished from his position and reappeared behind A-01, striking with full speed. But A-01 stepped aside effortlessly, as if he had already known the exact path Kabir would take. Kabir's attack missed completely, and his own momentum carried him straight into the wall.

"Speed without perception is useless," A-01 said calmly.

Neel stepped forward, raising both hands as a defensive barrier formed around the team. The translucent shield shimmered as it stabilized, creating a temporary line of protection between them and A-01.

"Stay together," Neel said, his voice strained but focused.

A-01 observed the barrier for a moment, almost as if analyzing it. "Defensive construct," he said. "Stable… but temporary."

He stepped forward.

The barrier cracked instantly.

Neel's hands trembled as he tried to maintain it, but the pressure was too much. "I can't hold it…" he said, struggling to keep it intact.

Aarav moved forward at that moment. Blue energy surged around him again, but this time it wasn't wild or unstable. It was focused, controlled, sharper than before.

"Then don't," Aarav said.

The barrier shattered.

And Aarav moved.

He didn't rush blindly. He didn't attack directly. Instead, he began circling A-01, his movements deliberate and unpredictable. He was testing, observing, adapting. This wasn't just a fight anymore. It was a process.

A-01 watched him carefully. "Adaptive behavior," he said. "Improvement noted."

Aarav struck.

This time, the attack connected.

The impact pushed A-01 back by a single step.

It wasn't much. But it was real.

Everyone saw it.

Kabir, still recovering, managed a faint grin. "He actually hit him…"

A-01 looked down briefly at his sleeve, where a small mark had formed. Then he looked back at Aarav. For the first time, there was a slight change in his expression. Not anger. Not fear. But interest.

"Interesting," he said.

Aarav didn't stop. He attacked again, and again, each strike faster and more precise than the last. A-01 blocked most of them, but not all. Small impacts landed. Minor damage, but enough to show that he wasn't untouchable.

Meera watched closely. Then something clicked in her mind.

"He's not just strong," she said.

Aarav glanced at her.

"He's learning from you."

That realization hit instantly. And for a brief second, Aarav's movement slowed.

That was enough.

A-01 countered.

A direct, precise strike.

Aarav was thrown back violently, crashing into the ground and sliding across the broken floor.

Meera rushed to him immediately. "Aarav!"

He struggled to breathe, forcing himself to stay conscious. "He's copying…" he said.

Meera nodded. "Yes."

Zara stepped forward, her expression focused. "Then we confuse him," she said.

The atmosphere shifted again. Subtle distortions spread across the room. Illusions layered over reality. Multiple versions of Aarav appeared, each moving differently, each creating uncertainty.

For the first time, A-01 paused.

Just for a fraction of a second.

But it was enough.

"Now!" Meera shouted.

Everyone moved at once. Kabir attacked from behind, Raghav from the side, Aarav from the front. Their combined attack collided in a powerful burst of energy that shook the entire room. Smoke filled the air, blocking everything from view.

For a moment, there was silence.

Then a figure stepped out of the smoke.

A-01.

Completely unaffected.

Not even a scratch.

"Analysis complete," he said calmly.

The team froze.

Zara stepped back slightly. "That… didn't work…"

A-01 looked at all of them, his gaze steady and unshaken. "Your coordination has improved," he said. "But it is insufficient."

He raised his hand again.

The controlled creatures moved.

But this time, they changed.

Their bodies shifted, their movements becoming smoother, more precise, more dangerous.

"Phase Three begins now," A-01 said.

Aarav forced himself to stand again. His body ached, but his eyes were sharper than ever. The fear was still there, but it was no longer controlling him.

"This isn't over," he said.

A-01 looked at him, and a faint smile appeared.

"No," he replied.

"It's just starting."

And then, the lights went out again.
