Chapter 70 - CHAPTER 70:TOUR OF ZAMBEZI-7

Three days after the auction, Kafu stood on the observation deck of a Varnax transport ship, watching Zambezi-7 grow from a distant point of light to a world of memory and pain.

His wives were hidden in the Dream Devourer's dimension, watching through his eyes, feeling through his bonds. They had wanted to come, to stand beside him, but this was a journey he needed to make alone.

Almost alone, Kyrella's voice echoed through the bond. We're with you. Always.

I know. He touched the rune on his heart. I know.

The transport descended through layers of atmosphere, through clouds of dust and despair, toward the surface he had fled so long ago.

Zambezi-7 hadn't changed.

The mining pits still scarred the landscape. The processing facilities still belched toxic smoke. The slave quarters still huddled in the shadows of overseer towers.

But something was different.

There were more slaves now. Thousands more. And they were younger—children, mostly, with the dull eyes of those who had never known freedom.

Kafu's jaw tightened.

"Beautiful, isn't it?" Valerius Jr. appeared beside him, his face alight with pride. "My father's vision. A self-sustaining breeding colony. Within a decade, we'll have more Ashari slaves than any other house."

Kafu forced a smile. "Impressive. How many currently?"

"About fifty thousand. Mostly breeding stock. The children are raised in specialized facilities—trained from birth to obey, to serve, to never question." The heir laughed. "They don't even know the word 'freedom.'"

Husband, Morana's voice was cold, let me out. Let me kill him.

Not yet. Not here. There are fifty thousand people who need us.

The transport landed in the central compound—a massive complex of administrative buildings, overseer quarters, and security stations. Valerius Jr. led Kafu through corridors lined with guards, all of whom bowed as the heir passed.

"My father wanted me to give you the full tour," Valerius said. "Show you the scope of our operation. Impress you with our efficiency."

"I'm already impressed."

"You haven't seen anything yet."

---

THE BREEDING FACILITY

The first stop was the breeding facility—a sprawling complex of dormitories, medical rooms, and "matching chambers." Ashari men and women were housed separately, brought together only when the overseers deemed it... productive.

Kafu watched as a young woman was led into a matching chamber, her face blank, her eyes empty. She couldn't have been more than twenty.

She's younger than Makena was, Kyrella whispered.

I know.

"Efficient, yes?" Valerius gestured at the complex. "We've optimized the process. Each pairing produces an average of three children before the females are... retired."

"Retired?"

The heir made a slicing motion across his throat. "Their organs are valuable. We sell them to medical cultivators. Nothing goes to waste."

Kafu's stomach turned. He kept his face calm.

"Fascinating."

---

THE CHILDREN'S WING

Next was the children's wing—a series of barracks filled with young Ashari, aged from infants to teenagers. They were being trained in basic tasks, their small hands already calloused from work.

A child—no more than five—looked up as Kafu passed. His eyes were dull, lifeless, already broken.

Kafu felt something inside him crack.

That was you, Morana's voice was soft. That was you, once.

I know.

"These are our future," Valerius said proudly. "By the time they're fifteen, they'll be productive members of the colony. By twenty, they'll be breeding. By forty, they'll be harvested."

"Harvested?"

"Organs, blood, bones—everything has value. We don't waste anything."

Kafu nodded slowly. "And the ones who resist?"

The heir smiled—a cold, cruel expression. "We have a special place for them. Would you like to see?"

---

THE PUNISHMENT PIT

The punishment pit was exactly what it sounded like—a deep hole in the ground, lined with spikes and crawling with creatures that fed on pain. At its bottom, a dozen Ashari huddled together, their bodies broken, their spirits crushed.

"These are the rebels," Valerius explained. "The ones who try to escape, who refuse to breed, who teach the children about freedom. We keep them alive as long as possible—their suffering serves as a warning."

One of the prisoners looked up. An old woman, her face lined with years of pain. Her eyes met Kafu's.

And for just a moment, something flickered in them. Recognition? Hope? Despair?

Kafu looked away.

Husband, Kyrella's voice was hard. When?

Soon. Very soon.

THE ADMINISTRATION

The tour ended in the administration building, where Valerius's father waited with his advisors.

"Lord Aurelius," Valerius Sr. said warmly. "I trust my son has shown you the full scope of our operation?"

"He has. It's... impressive."

"We pride ourselves on efficiency. Every Ashari on this planet serves a purpose. Nothing is wasted." The patriarch gestured to a chair. "Please, sit. We have much to discuss."

Kafu sat, his expression attentive, his mind racing.

"We've been reviewing the information from the Chaos Writer Tablet," Valerius Sr. continued. "It's everything we hoped for and more. The ability to rewrite reality... we could do anything. Anything."

Kafu nodded. "And what do you plan to do with it?"

The patriarch leaned forward, his eyes gleaming. "Expand. Conquer. Eliminate our rivals. House Varnax will become the dominant power in existence." He smiled. "And you, Lord Aurelius, will be rewarded beyond your wildest dreams."

"I'm honored."

"There's just one thing." The patriarch's expression shifted—a flicker of suspicion. "The tablet... it doesn't seem to work the way we expected. Every time we try to use it, the results are... unpredictable."

Kafu's heart raced. The fake tablet was working exactly as designed—recording everything, transmitting everything, appearing to function while actually doing nothing.

"Perhaps you need more practice," he suggested smoothly. "Such artifacts often have a learning curve."

"Perhaps." The patriarch studied him for a long moment. "Or perhaps the tablet we received isn't the real one."

Silence stretched.

Kafu met his gaze without flinching. "Are you accusing me of something, Lord Varnax?"

"Not at all. Just... thinking out loud." The patriarch smiled again, but his eyes remained cold. "We'll continue our experiments. I'm sure the tablet will reveal its secrets in time."

"I'm sure it will."

---

THE SOUL SEAL ACTIVATES

As Kafu rose to leave, he felt a pulse through his bond with Valerius Jr. The soul seal he had placed on the heir was... activating. Not fully, not yet, but responding to something.

He glanced at the younger Varnax. The heir's eyes were glazed, distant, as if listening to a voice only he could hear.

What's happening? Kyrella asked.

The seal is responding to his father's suspicion. It's... amplifying his loyalty to me. Making him want to protect me, to defend me, to keep my secrets.

Useful.

Very.

Valerius Jr. blinked, then turned to his father. "Father, I vouch for Lord Aurelius completely. He has been nothing but honorable. If the tablet isn't working, it must be our error, not his."

The patriarch raised an eyebrow. "You're quite certain?"

"Absolutely. I would stake my life on it."

Valerius Sr. studied his son for a moment, then nodded. "Very well. We'll continue our experiments. Lord Aurelius, thank you for your patience."

Kafu bowed. "Thank you for the tour. It's been... educational."

THE RETURN

As the transport lifted off, Kafu stood at the observation deck, watching Zambezi-7 shrink behind him.

Fifty thousand Ashari slaves. Children being raised in darkness. Rebels suffering in pits. And a family that thought they could profit from it all.

Husband, Kyrella's voice was soft. What are you feeling?

Rage. Grief. Hope.

Hope?

They're still there. Still alive. Still waiting for someone to save them. He touched the rune on his heart. I was one of them, once. And someone saved me. Now it's my turn.

When?

Soon. But first, we need to know everything. Their security. Their schedules. Their weaknesses. The soul seal on the heir will give us that.

And then?

And then we free them. Every single one.

The transport vanished into dimensional space, leaving Zambezi-7 behind.

But Kafu's eyes never left the planet until it was gone.
