Chapter 8 - Chapter 8 — The One It Chose

The moment it entered—

Everything changed.

The presence in the room became suffocating, like the air itself had turned against them. The shadow that slipped through the window did not fully take shape, yet it was undeniably there—stretching, bending, watching.

No one spoke.

No one moved.

Haruto felt it immediately.

This was different from before.

Last time, it attacked suddenly.

This time—

It was observing.

Choosing.

Aoi felt it too.

More than anyone else.

Her chest tightened as if something invisible had wrapped around her, pulling her attention forward. Her eyes locked onto the shifting darkness near the window.

"It's… looking at me," she whispered.

Ren stepped forward instinctively. "Don't stand there—come back."

But Aoi didn't move.

Haruto's expression darkened.

"Aoi."

No response.

Kaito's voice shook slightly. "Why isn't she moving?"

Because something was holding her.

Not physically—

But deeper than that.

The Pull

Aoi's breathing slowed.

Not by choice.

The room around her blurred, the voices of her friends becoming distant, like echoes underwater.

And then—

She heard it.

A voice.

Soft.

Clear.

"Aoi…"

Not the distorted imitation from before.

This one—

Felt real.

Her lips parted slightly.

"…Who…?"

Haruto stepped forward quickly.

"Aoi, don't listen to it!"

But she couldn't hear him properly anymore.

The voice came again.

Closer.

Gentler.

"…Come outside…"

Her body moved.

Just one step.

"AOI!" Ren shouted.

That broke something.

For a moment, Aoi blinked—

And the world snapped back into place.

Fear hit her instantly.

"I—I didn't mean to—"

"Don't move!" Haruto said sharply.

Too late.

The Attack Begins

The shadow reacted instantly.

It surged forward.

Faster than before.

Aoi gasped as something invisible slammed into her, sending her crashing to the floor.

"AOI!" Kaito rushed forward—

"Stop!" Haruto grabbed him. "You'll get hit too!"

The air twisted violently.

The shadow hovered over Aoi.

Closer.

More defined now.

Long limbs.

A hollow shape.

And that same absence where a face should be.

Aoi tried to move—

But couldn't.

Her body felt heavy.

Pinned.

"…Why… you…" the voice echoed, broken and uneven.

It wasn't copying anymore.

It was speaking.

The Target

Haruto's mind raced.

Why her?

Then it clicked.

"She reacted first," he said under his breath.

Ren looked at him. "What?"

"It's targeting the one who responds," Haruto said. "The one who listens."

Kaito clenched his jaw. "Then we pull her out!"

"No," Haruto said.

His voice was steady.

But his eyes were sharp.

"If we rush in blindly, it'll attack all of us."

Ren snapped, "Then what do we do?! Just watch?!"

Haruto didn't answer immediately.

Because he was calculating.

Timing.

Distance.

Risk.

Everything.

Aoi Alone

Aoi's vision blurred again.

The shadow leaned closer.

Too close.

And for a moment—

She thought she saw something.

Not a face.

But a memory.

A flash.

Pink petals.

A hand reaching out.

"…Run…"

That same voice.

The gentle one.

The protector.

The Decision

Haruto moved.

Fast.

Before anyone could stop him.

"Haruto—!" Ren shouted.

But he was already there.

He grabbed Aoi's arm and pulled—

The shadow reacted instantly.

It struck.

A force hit Haruto directly.

Hard.

He was thrown back, slamming into the ground with a sharp impact.

"Haruto!" Aoi screamed.

The hold on her weakened for a second—

Just enough.

She pulled herself back, crawling away.

The shadow shifted again.

Now—

It turned toward Haruto.

Almost Death

Haruto struggled to breathe.

Pain shot through his chest as he tried to sit up.

The shadow approached slowly.

Not rushing.

Not wild.

Controlled.

Deliberate.

As if it knew—

He was the real threat.

Ren stepped forward despite everything.

"I'm not letting this happen!"

Kaito grabbed him. "Don't—!"

Too late.

Ren picked up a wooden chair and threw it.

This time—

It didn't pass through.

It hit.

The shadow distorted violently.

A sharp, unnatural sound filled the room.

"It reacted!" Ren shouted.

Haruto's eyes widened slightly.

"Physical impact… works," he muttered.

The Turning Point

The shadow faltered.

Just for a second.

But that was enough.

Aoi looked up.

The petals returned.

Faint.

Barely visible.

But there.

The air shifted again.

The shadow recoiled slightly.

Not fully retreating—

But hesitating.

Escape

"Now!" Haruto shouted.

Kaito didn't hesitate this time.

He grabbed Aoi, pulling her away from the center of the room.

Ren moved back quickly.

The group regrouped near the wall.

The shadow lingered for a moment longer.

Then—

It retreated.

Not vanished.

Just… pulled back.

Through the window.

Gone.

Aftermath

Silence.

Heavy.

Unreal.

No one spoke.

They were breathing too hard.

Thinking too fast.

Finally—

Ren broke it.

"…We almost died."

No one argued.

Because it was true.

Haruto looked at Aoi.

"You heard something," he said.

She nodded slowly.

"…It told me to run."

Kaito frowned. "The same one?"

Aoi hesitated.

Then—

"Yes."

Final Line

Haruto looked toward the open window.

His voice was quiet.

But certain.

"…Then next time…"

He paused.

"…we won't just survive."

His eyes hardened.

"We fight back."
