Chapter 20 — Shadows Before Dawn

Day 12 — Night

3:00 AM

The desert was silent.

Not peaceful silent.

The kind of silence that makes your instincts uneasy.

The camp slept under the cold Sahara sky. The fire in the center had burned down to glowing embers, barely lighting the tents.

Most of the students were asleep.

But not all.

Outside the girls' tent, three figures sat quietly near the dying fire.

Care.

Lyra.

Ash.

The three of them had wrapped light shawls around their shoulders to protect from the cold desert wind.

Lyra stretched her legs out on the sand.

"I miss Wi-Fi."

Ash laughed softly.

"You don't miss Wi-Fi. You miss stalking your team."

Lyra grinned.

"Both."

Care sat slightly apart from them, staring at the dark horizon.

Ash glanced at her.

"You've been quiet."

Care shrugged.

"It's been two weeks."

Lyra immediately understood.

"Since we went offline."

Care nodded.

"Two weeks without contacting our teams."

Ash crossed her arms.

"They can manage."

Care shook her head slowly.

"It's not about management."

Her voice was calm.

"It's about power gaps."

Lyra sighed.

"The underground world doesn't like silence."

Care nodded.

"When leaders disappear for two weeks…"

"…people start moving pieces."

Ash leaned forward.

"Your network won't collapse in two weeks."

Care smirked faintly.

"Phoenix Syndicate doesn't collapse."

Lyra laughed.

"That sounded arrogant."

Care shrugged.

"It's a fact."

For a moment the three girls sat quietly watching the desert.

Then—

Care suddenly froze.

Lyra noticed immediately.

"What?"

Care didn't answer.

Her eyes were focused on the darkness behind the tents.

Ash whispered,

"Care?"

Care stood up slowly.

Her expression changed.

Sharp.

Alert.

The kind of expression that belonged to someone who had survived far more dangerous places than a student camp.

Lyra followed her gaze.

"What do you see?"

Care didn't look at them.

"Movement."

Ash stood up immediately.

"Where?"

Care pointed slightly toward the ridge behind the tents.

"There."

Lyra narrowed her eyes.

At first she saw nothing.

Then—

A shadow moved.

Footsteps.

Very faint.

Ash whispered,

"Guards."

Care nodded slowly.

Two dark figures were walking around the outer boundary of the camp.

Watching.

Observing.

They clearly hadn't expected anyone to be awake.

One of them noticed the three girls sitting outside.

They froze.

For a moment both sides simply watched each other.

Then the guards slowly turned around.

And disappeared back into the darkness.

Lyra frowned.

"They left."

Ash looked suspicious.

"That's strange."

Care's eyes remained fixed on the darkness.

"They weren't patrolling."

Lyra looked at her.

"What do you mean?"

Care's voice was quiet.

"They were checking."

Ash crossed her arms.

"Checking what?"

Care looked at the tents.

"…us."

The fire crackled softly.

Lyra rubbed her arms.

"That's creepy."

Ash sighed.

"HU administration."

Care finally sat down again.

Her instincts were still uneasy.

"They were closer tonight."

Lyra frowned.

"Too close."

Ash nodded.

"They're getting impatient."

Care stared at the dark horizon again.

"Good."

Lyra blinked.

"Good?"

Care's eyes sharpened.

"Because that means they're nervous."

Ash smiled slightly.

"Which means…"

Care finished calmly.

"…they're afraid of losing their prisoners."

The three girls sat in silence again.

Watching the desert.

Watching the shadows.

Day 13 — Morning

The camp slowly woke under the rising sun.

But three people had already been awake for hours.

Care.

Lyra.

Ash.

At 5:00 AM they had started their usual routine.

Yoga.

Breathing exercises.

Strength training.

Silent focus.

Now the sun was beginning to rise over the dunes.

Care stood balanced in a steady yoga pose.

Lyra was stretching nearby.

Ash finished a set of push-ups.

"Forty-five."

Lyra groaned.

"I hate you both."

Ash smirked.

"You love us."

Lyra collapsed dramatically onto the sand.

"I'm surrounded by fitness addicts."

Suddenly—

A loud voice exploded across the camp.

"WAKE UP YOU LAZY HUMANS!"

Percy.

He jumped out of the boys' tent dramatically.

"THE SUN HAS RISEN!"

Cin groaned from inside the tent.

"Shut up."

Percy ignored him.

"THE DAY DEMANDS GREATNESS!"

Endrix threw a shoe at him.

"GO AWAY."

The rest of the boys slowly began waking up.

Alex stumbled out of the tent rubbing his eyes.

"What time is it…"

Lyra shouted from the training area.

"Morning."

Alex squinted at them.

"You three have been awake for hours, haven't you?"

Ash nodded proudly.

"Correct."

Alex groaned.

"You're monsters."

Soon the entire camp was awake.

The group gathered around the fire area again.

Breakfast was simple.

Bread.

Fruit.

Some packaged food.

While everyone ate, Care suddenly spoke.

"Something happened last night."

The group immediately looked up.

Cole leaned forward.

"What?"

Care's voice was calm.

"Guards were near the tents."

The atmosphere changed instantly.

Zein frowned.

"How close?"

Care answered quietly.

"Very close."

Ace looked serious.

"That's not good."

Race clenched his jaw.

"They're watching us now."

Matt nodded slowly.

"They're getting suspicious."

Percy stopped eating.

"Wait…"

"…like creepy midnight spying suspicious?"

Care nodded.

"Yes. I saw them when I woke up for drinking water.."

Everyone fell silent.

Thyme crossed his arms.

"That means they're monitoring the camp."

Ren nodded.

"They're waiting."

Kavin looked at the HU group.

"Waiting for what?"

Zein answered quietly.

"For us."

The tension grew heavier.

Gorya looked at the group.

"We need to finalize the escape plan."

Cole nodded.

"Agreed."

Ace looked toward the distant desert.

"When?"

Care answered immediately.

"Last day."

Everyone turned to her.

Care continued calmly.

"Day 30."

Matt frowned.

"That's when everyone goes to the airport."

Care nodded.

"Exactly."

Ash added,

"The administration will expect HU students to board the plane."

Lyra smirked.

"And that's when they disappear."

Percy blinked.

"Wait… disappear HOW?"

Everyone looked at each other.

The truth was—

No one knew yet.

Ren sighed.

"So basically the plan is…"

"…escape somehow."

Care shrugged.

"For now."

The group groaned.

Percy pointed dramatically.

"This is the worst plan I have ever heard."

Care smirked.

"Relax."

Her eyes were sharp.

"We have seventeen days to figure it out."

Zein crossed her arms.

"Until then…"

Ace finished quietly.

"…we act normal."

Cole nodded slowly.

"Very normal."

Percy looked around nervously.

"With guards spying on us?"

Ash smirked.

"Welcome to survival camp."

The group laughed lightly.

But beneath the laughter—

Everyone understood.

The real game had already started.

And somewhere in the shadows of the desert—

The guards were watching.

Waiting.

For the moment the prisoners would try to run.
