Chapter 32 — The Day of the Escape
The cold Ladakh morning was unnervingly quiet, but underneath the calm, tension crackled like electricity. Care stood near the lead vehicle, her eyes scanning the route, her hands tightening around the radio. Cole was beside her, calm yet alert, watching every guard's movement. Lyra and Alex were in the same car, quiet, but their eyes darted around, picking up every detail. Ash was in the back, helping coordinate the HU students via radio signals, ensuring everyone was on the same page.
"Care, the guards are moving closer to the vans. Are we ready?" Alex's voice was sharp but low.
Care's eyes flicked to each van, the drivers, and the guards. "Phase one begins now. Remember, stay calm. HU students, follow the route exactly. Don't speak unless necessary."
In the HU students' car, Zein leaned forward. "Care, do we take the left at the junction near the cliff?"
"Yes. And keep your speed steady. Don't let anyone suspect," Care replied, her voice steady despite the adrenaline pumping through her veins.
Race looked at Allison and Matt, whispering urgently. "Allison, Matt, stay ready. If guards check, act normal. No hesitation."
Allison nodded. "Got it. We're ready."
Meanwhile, in another vehicle, Percy leaned forward. "Keifer, if anything goes wrong, we improvise. Understood?"
Keifer's jaw tightened. "Understood. Everyone stay with me. JJ, stay close."
JJ, sitting beside him, gave a small nod. "I'm ready."
Gorya's group in the Thailand vehicle were silent, organized. Thyme whispered to Kavin, "Watch the rear. MJ, Ren, stay alert. One false move and the whole plan collapses."
MJ cracked a grin despite the tension. "Relax. We've got this."
Ren rolled his eyes, tightening his harness. "Focus. This isn't a joke."
Cole leaned toward Care as the vehicles began moving. "Are we sure the guards will take the bait?"
Care's eyes narrowed. "They have no choice. All indicators point to the decoy vehicles. Stick to plan. We move only when everyone confirms."
From the rearview mirror, Care watched the HU students' van slowing slightly, a guard walking toward it. Her pulse quickened. She whispered into the radio, "Phase two now. Zein, Allison, Matt, ready?"
"Ready," Zein replied. Mia squeezed Ace's hand beside her, eyes wide but trusting.
Ace's voice was steady. "We do this carefully. One slip and it's over."
The van carrying the HU students slowed just enough for the guards to believe it was them, while another vehicle quietly took the real route toward the safe exit. Cole's hand hovered near his comms device, tension clear on his sharp features.
"Care… the switch worked. HU students are on the decoy route," Cole murmured quietly, eyes scanning the terrain.
Care nodded, almost imperceptibly. "Good. All teams maintain radio silence until checkpoint Alpha. Percy, confirm your route."
Percy's voice was loud, but controlled. "Route confirmed. Everyone stay alert. Don't make eye contact with any guard walking near the vans."
Lyra whispered to Alex, "This is insane. What if they see us?"
Alex's hand found hers. "Then we improvise. But trust Care—she has it under control."
In the Thailand vehicle, Thyme muttered, "Rear looks clear. We're invisible for now. Everyone breathe."
Gorya's sharp gaze never left the road. "One misstep, and the plan fails. Stick to formation."
Inside the decoy van, Zein, Mia, Allison, and Matt kept their composure, following Care's silent instructions. A guard walked past, glancing at the passengers. Zein's heart pounded, but she didn't flinch. Allison's hand hovered near her bag, ready to act.
Outside, Care whispered to Cole, "Now. Move on my signal."
Cole's eyes met hers. "Ready."
Percy's van had already started accelerating toward the checkpoint. Keifer whispered, "Everyone stay calm. Keep movements natural. HU students must believe they are still under observation."
Mia, inside the decoy van, whispered to Ace, "This feels like the edge of the world."
Ace's grip on the seat tightened. "Stay focused. Eyes forward. Don't panic."
Cole and Care's van took the lead as the real HU students' vehicle followed the secret route. Lyra's fingers tightened around Alex's arm. "Are we really doing this?"
Alex squeezed her hand back. "We're doing exactly what Care planned. Trust her."
Percy's dramatic voice came over the radio again. "Checkpoint Alpha, confirm! HU decoys still in sight?"
Zein, whispering to Allison, whispered back, "They're in sight, but they have no idea we're not going where they think. Stay calm."
Ash, monitoring the routes, whispered into the radio: "Phase three starts at next junction. Everyone stick to their code names."
The vehicles navigated rocky terrain, narrow roads, and winding paths. Dust swirled, engines roared, and the guards followed the decoy, unaware. Cole caught Care's eye. "This is insane. They can't even see what's coming."
Care smirked faintly. "Exactly. Let's keep it that way."
Lyra whispered to Alex again, "I never thought I'd be in the middle of a real escape like this."
Alex grinned. "You'll remember it forever."
The Thai and Philippine groups, separated by several minutes, followed the planned route to meet up at the airport. Keifer's voice came over, tense but relieved: "Everyone accounted for. HU decoys are following the wrong path. Phase three in motion."
Cole's eyes scanned the mountains. "Any surprises?"
Care shook her head. "Nothing they can't handle. Stick to formation."
Inside the decoy HU vehicle, the students exchanged worried glances. Zein mouthed a silent "thank you" to Care, Mia's hands trembling slightly, Ace keeping his usual cold composure but his eyes betraying relief.
As the convoy moved further, the chaos was tangible. Dust, engine noise, shouting of instructions, whispering orders, tension gripping everyone—but coordination was perfect.
Finally, at the safe checkpoint, Care whispered into the radio, "All units converge. HU students secured. Phase four begins."
Cole exhaled sharply. "We did it… so far."
Percy yelled dramatically in the radio, "WE'RE ALIVE!"
Lyra laughed, clutching Alex's arm. "Barely alive."
Alex smirked, pulling her closer. "Barely is enough."
Care's eyes swept over all the teams, HU students now secure, Indian group calm yet alert, Thailand and Philippine groups in formation. The tension, chaos, fear, and adrenaline mixed perfectly.
"This isn't over," Care muttered. "But the hardest part… we did it."
Cole simply nodded, silent, but his eyes never left her.
The mountains echoed with the engines, shouts, and chaos—but the escape was in motion, perfectly coordinated, and the HU students were finally on their way to freedom.
Chaos, strategy, adrenaline, and trust—it had all come together in a moment of flawless but tense execution.
