Phoebe Faulkner used the ingredients on hand to make winter melon patties and a meal of three dishes and a soup. To keep Jace Lennox from finding fault, she'd made all her specialty dishes—the ones even her grandfather couldn't find a single thing to complain about.
However, after she finished cooking, she stayed downstairs, waiting and waiting.
She waited for a full half hour. The food was about to get cold, but Jace Lennox still hadn't come down.
'Something's not right.'
'Jace Lennox has been in the bath for two hours now. He couldn't have drowned in the tub, could he?'
At the thought of this possibility, Phoebe Faulkner couldn't sit still any longer.
She turned and ran upstairs.
Just as she reached the top of the stairs, she saw the man standing in front of the window at the end of the hallway, smoking a cigarette.
