Chapter 28 - Chapter 28

"I never stopped loving you."

The words slipped from her lips like a fragile confession—soft, trembling, yet powerful enough to shake the entire room.

For a moment, time seemed to freeze.

The music faded into nothingness. The murmurs of the guests disappeared. Even the air felt heavier, as if the world itself was holding its breath.

She stood there, her heart racing uncontrollably, her hands shaking as tears streamed down her face.

She had carried those words inside her for months—locked away, buried under fear, sacrifice, and silence.

And now… they were finally free.

Her fiancé took a step back, his expression shifting from confusion to disbelief.

"What… did you just say?" he asked, his voice low but sharp.

But she didn't look at him.

She couldn't.

Because the only person she could see—

the only person she had ever truly seen—

was standing right in front of her.

Him.

The man she had left behind.

The man she had tried so hard to forget.

The man she had never truly lost.

"I tried," she continued, her voice breaking. "I tried to move on… I tried to forget everything… to forget you."

Her chest tightened as the memories rushed back—every moment, every smile, every promise they had once made.

"But no matter how far I ran…"

Her eyes met his.

"You were always there."

He stood frozen, his breath uneven, his eyes filled with emotions he couldn't even name.

Hope. Pain. Relief. Fear.

All tangled together.

"You left," he finally said, his voice quieter now, but no less heavy. "Without a word… without a reason… you just disappeared."

Each word carried the weight of everything he had endured.

"You broke me."

She flinched.

Not because he was wrong—

but because he was right.

"I know," she whispered. "And I've hated myself every day for it."

Silence fell again.

The kind of silence that wasn't empty—

but full of everything that had never been said.

"I didn't leave because I stopped loving you," she said, her voice trembling but steady enough to continue. "I left because I loved you too much."

Confusion crossed his face.

"That doesn't make sense."

"It does," she replied softly. "You just didn't know the truth."

She took a deep breath, gathering the courage she had been missing for so long.

"My family found out about us."

His eyes widened slightly.

"They didn't approve. Not even a little. They said… if I didn't leave you…"

Her voice broke again.

"They would destroy your life."

The words hit him like a storm.

"What?"

"They had the power to do it," she continued. "Your job… your future… everything you worked for… they could take it away."

He shook his head, disbelief written all over his face.

"You should have told me," he said.

"I wanted to," she replied, tears falling faster now. "God, I wanted to… but I was scared. Scared that if I stayed… they would actually do it."

Her voice softened.

"I couldn't risk you."

The room felt smaller.

The world felt heavier.

And suddenly—everything he thought he knew… changed.

"You made that decision… alone?"

She nodded slowly.

"Because I knew… if I asked you… you would choose me."

He didn't deny it.

Because she was right.

"I thought… if I left… you would hate me," she said. "And maybe that would make it easier for you to move on."

A bitter smile appeared on his face.

"It didn't."

Her heart shattered again.

"I know," she whispered.

They stood there, facing each other—two broken souls, finally understanding the truth behind their pain.

"I never stopped loving you," she repeated, her voice softer now.

And this time—

He believed her.
