Chapter 32 – Plans and Preparations

The days turned into weeks, each one bringing us closer to the vow renewal ceremony and, with every flutter in my belly, closer to meeting our baby. The apartment, once a place of quiet endurance, now buzzed with a joyful energy. Adrian, truly free from the shadow of the past, was a whirlwind of enthusiasm. He spent evenings poring over church brochures, discussing floral arrangements, and, most frequently, gently tracing patterns on my growing stomach, whispering sweet nothings to our child.

On Wednesday morning, we woke up together, the sunlight streaming through the windows feeling especially warm. The smell of coffee Adrian had already started brewing filled the air. He turned to me, his eyes sparkling. "Good morning, my beautiful wife."

"Good morning, my husband," I replied, stretching languidly. The morning sickness, thankfully, had started to subside, replaced by a blossoming sense of well-being.

After breakfast, as he got ready for work, he paused by the door, his hand instinctively going to my stomach. "You two have a good day. I'll call Mom later to discuss the cake options."

I laughed. "She's really taking this seriously, isn't she?"

"She loves it," he grinned. "She finally gets to plan a real wedding." He kissed my forehead, then my stomach, and left at 7 a.m.

I spent the morning researching baby names, drawing up a list of possibilities that filled my heart with a quiet excitement. The future, once a distant concept, was now meticulously planned, down to the smallest detail.

At 4 p.m., Mrs. Cole texted: *Layla is asking about the baby shower.* I smiled. Layla was truly invested in her role as big sister. I replied: *We'll talk about it soon.*

At 8 p.m., Adrian came home, his usual evening routine now punctuated by a loving greeting for me and our baby. He hugged me tightly, then knelt to kiss my stomach. "Hi, baby. How was your day with Mama?"

I laughed, wrapping my arms around his shoulders. "My day was good. Your mom called."

"Ah, the wedding planner in chief," he chuckled. "What's the latest update?"

"She found a church she loves, and she wants us to meet the priest this weekend," I told him. "She also wants to finalize the guest list."

He nodded, already pulling out his phone. "Perfect. I'll clear my schedule. This is important."

I served dinner, a relaxed meal filled with discussions about wedding colors and potential hymns. We were truly building something new, together.

After dinner, we settled onto the couch, Adrian's arm around me, his hand resting on my stomach.

"Lila," he said softly.

"Yes?"

"I can't believe this is happening. Everything. The baby, the renewal. It feels… too good to be true."

"It's true, Adrian," I reassured him, squeezing his hand. "We've earned this happiness."

He kissed my forehead. "I love you."

"I love you too."

We sat on the couch until 10 p.m., envisioning our future. He went to his office, and I to my room.

That night I opened the notebook.

*Day 138 – Adrian's mom is full speed ahead with wedding plans. We're meeting the priest this weekend. Layla is asking about the baby shower. Everything feels so joyful.*

Under it:

*She's Lila. She's his wife. Our future is bright.*

Thursday morning, we woke up together. Adrian's excitement was infectious. He talked about potential honeymoon spots, even though we both knew a long trip wouldn't be feasible with a newborn. It was the thought that counted.

He kissed my stomach extra long before leaving for work at 7 a.m.

At 8 p.m., he came home, looking a little more serious than usual. After his customary greeting to me and the baby, he sat down next to me.

"What's wrong?" I asked, sensing a shift in his mood.

He sighed. "My lawyers called. Karim's sentencing is next week. They want me to be there for the victim impact statement."

My heart sank a little. The shadow of the trial, though diminished, still lingered. "Do you want me to come?"

He took my hand. "Only if you feel up to it. I know it's not easy."

"I'll be there," I said firmly. I wouldn't let him face it alone. "We face everything together now."

He smiled, a grateful, weary smile. "Thank you, Lila."

We ate dinner in a more subdued atmosphere, the conversation drifting between wedding plans and the upcoming sentencing. The duality of our lives – joy and closure – was ever-present.

After dinner, sitting on the couch, he held me close. "Are you sure you want to go?"

"Yes. This is the last step. Then we can truly close that chapter."

He nodded, pressing a kiss to my hair. "I love you."

"I love you too."

We sat until 10 p.m. He went to his office. I went to my room.

That night I opened the notebook.

*Day 139 – Karim's sentencing is next week. Adrian wants me there. It's hard, but necessary for closure. Building our future means fully releasing the past.*

Under it:

*She's Lila. She's his wife. Strong together.*

Friday morning brought a renewed sense of purpose. We had coffee and breakfast, discussing the details for our meeting with the priest. It felt good to focus on the positive, on the new life we were building.

Adrian kissed my stomach before he left at 7 a.m.

At 4 p.m., Mrs. Cole texted: *Layla wants to bake cookies for you and the baby tomorrow.* I chuckled. *That sounds wonderful!*

At 8 p.m., Adrian came home, his spirits lifted by the thought of the weekend's plans. He hugged me, then our baby. "Tomorrow, we meet the priest. And we can start thinking about our vows."

"I've already started," I confessed, a blush rising to my cheeks.

He grinned. "I knew you would."

We had dinner, talking excitedly about the ceremony, the symbolism of renewing our vows, of truly choosing each other in front of everyone.

After dinner, we sat on the couch, his hand a constant, comforting presence on my stomach.

"Lila," he said.

"Yes?"

"Thank you for giving me this second chance at happiness."

"Thank you for taking it, Adrian."

He kissed my forehead. "I love you."

"I love you too."

We sat on the couch until 10 p.m. He went to his office, and I to my room.

That night I opened the notebook.

*Day 140 – Meeting the priest tomorrow to discuss the vow renewal. Feeling so excited to make this official, to truly step into our future together. Our vows will be a testament to our journey.*

Under it:

*She's Lila. She's his wife. Choosing love, always.*

Saturday morning, the day felt charged with anticipation. We dressed carefully, Adrian in a smart casual shirt, me in a comfortable but elegant dress that still accommodated my early pregnancy.

We had coffee and breakfast, a final run-through of what we wanted to discuss with the priest.

At 9 a.m., we left for the church. It was a beautiful old building, filled with stained glass and a serene quietness. The priest, Father Michael, was a kind-faced man who listened attentively as we explained our unusual journey and our desire to renew our vows.

"Love finds a way, even through hardship," Father Michael smiled, his words comforting. He gave us some readings and asked us to think about our personal vows.

We left the church feeling uplifted and more connected than ever.

On the way home, Adrian suggested we pick up a small gift for Layla for our visit tomorrow.

At 4 p.m., Mrs. Cole texted, *Layla made so many cookies! She insists you come for tea.* I replied, *Be right there!*

At 8 p.m., Adrian came home, a contented smile on his face. He hugged me, then our baby. "Today was perfect."

"It really was," I agreed, thinking of the peace I felt in the church, and Layla's excitement.

We had dinner, recounting the day's events. Layla had indeed made many cookies, and Adrian and I had shared a quiet, joyful afternoon planning our little visit.

After dinner, we sat on the couch, planning our next few weeks: gown fittings, tasting cakes, and, most importantly, preparing for the baby's arrival.

"Lila," he said, his voice full of warmth.

"Yes?"

"I'm so grateful for you."

"And I for you, Adrian."

He kissed my forehead. "I love you."

"I love you too."

We sat on the couch until 10 p.m. He went to his office, and I to my room.

That night I opened the notebook.

*Day 141 – Met Father Michael. The church is beautiful. Everything feels right. Layla made cookies! Our future is bright and full of blessings.*

Under it:

*She's Lila. She's his wife. Blessed.*

I closed the notebook. The next morning, I woke up feeling a profound sense of peace. The vow renewal ceremony was set in motion, the baby was growing, and our family was flourishing. The future, once a daunting journey, now felt like a beautifully unfolding story, one we were writing together, page by joyful page.
