Prophet Yahya (peace be upon him), known as John the Baptist in English, was one of the most remarkable prophets sent by Allah. His life was filled with purity, wisdom, and devotion from a very early age. The story of his birth and childhood is not only inspiring but also deeply meaningful for anyone seeking to understand faith, patience, and righteousness.
The story begins with his father, Prophet Zakariya (peace be upon him), a noble and devoted servant of Allah. Zakariya (peace be upon him) was entrusted with the responsibility of guiding the Children of Israel. He spent his life calling people towards righteousness, reminding them of Allah, and serving in the sacred place of worship.
Despite his deep faith and dedication, Prophet Zakariya (peace be upon him) carried a silent sorrow in his heart—he had no child. As he grew older, this concern became even greater. He feared that after his death, there would be no one to continue the mission of guiding the people. His wife was also very old and had never been able to bear children. From a human perspective, having a child seemed impossible.
But true believers never lose hope in Allah's mercy.
Zakariya (peace be upon him) continued to pray sincerely. One day, while standing in prayer in the sanctuary, he made a heartfelt supplication. He called upon Allah with humility and deep longing:
"O my Lord, grant me from Yourself a good offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication."
This was not just a request for a child—it was a prayer for a righteous successor who would continue the work of spreading truth and guiding people.
Allah, in His infinite mercy, accepted this prayer. Angels came to Zakariya (peace be upon him) with glad tidings. They told him that he would soon have a son, and that his name would be Yahya—a name that had never been given to anyone before.
This was a moment of shock and amazement for Zakariya (peace be upon him). He wondered how such a thing could happen when he was so old and his wife was barren. He asked Allah:
"My Lord, how will I have a boy when I have reached old age and my wife is barren?"
Allah responded with a powerful reminder:
"Thus it will be. Allah does what He wills."
This response teaches a fundamental truth: human limitations do not apply to Allah's power. What seems impossible to us is effortless for Him.
As a sign of this miracle, Zakariya (peace be upon him) was told that he would not be able to speak to people for three days except through gestures, though he would remain healthy. This sign strengthened his faith and made him realize the greatness of Allah's plan.
Soon after, the miracle came true. Yahya (peace be upon him) was born.
His birth itself was a sign for the people—a reminder that Allah has control over all things. Just as He had created Adam without parents and Isa (Jesus) without a father, He granted Zakariya (peace be upon him) a child in his old age.
From the very beginning, Yahya (peace be upon him) was different.
Allah blessed him with wisdom, understanding, and purity at a very young age. The Qur'an highlights that he was given "Hukm" (judgment and wisdom) while still a child. This means that even in his early years, he possessed a level of insight and maturity that others could not match.
Unlike other children, Yahya (peace be upon him) did not spend his time in idle play. Instead, he was deeply focused on worship, reflection, and learning. His heart was attached to Allah, and his actions reflected sincerity and discipline.
He was also known for his kindness and compassion. He treated others with gentleness and respect. He cared for the weak and showed mercy to those in need. His character was a reflection of divine guidance.
One of the most beautiful qualities of Yahya (peace be upon him) was his obedience to his parents. He was extremely respectful, loving, and caring towards them. He never disobeyed them, nor did he show arrogance. This is specifically mentioned as one of his defining traits—he was dutiful to his parents and not harsh or rebellious.
This teaches us an important lesson: true righteousness includes good behavior towards one's family, especially parents.
Yahya (peace be upon him) was also known for his humility. Despite being blessed with knowledge and wisdom, he never became proud. He lived a simple life, avoiding unnecessary luxuries. His focus was always on pleasing Allah rather than seeking worldly comfort.
He practiced self-control and discipline in a way that was extraordinary. He stayed away from sinful behavior and avoided distractions that could take him away from his purpose. His life was centered around devotion, sincerity, and truth.
As he grew older, people began to notice his exceptional character. They saw in him a young man who was wise beyond his years, someone who spoke truth and lived by it. His presence inspired others, and his actions served as a reminder of what it means to live a life devoted to Allah.

হযরত ইয়াহিয়া (আলাইহিস সালাম) ছিলেন আল্লাহর একজন মহান নবী, যাঁর জীবন শুরু থেকেই ছিল বিস্ময়কর ও শিক্ষণীয়। তাঁর জন্ম, শৈশব এবং চরিত্র এমনভাবে গঠিত হয়েছিল যা মানবজাতির জন্য এক অনন্য দৃষ্টান্ত হয়ে আছে।
এই কাহিনীর শুরু হয় তাঁর পিতা হযরত জাকারিয়া (আলাইহিস সালাম) থেকে। তিনি ছিলেন বনি ইসরাঈলের একজন সম্মানিত নবী এবং আল্লাহর অত্যন্ত প্রিয় বান্দা। তিনি মসজিদে ইবাদত করতেন, মানুষকে আল্লাহর পথে আহ্বান করতেন এবং সর্বদা সৎকাজে নিজেকে নিয়োজিত রাখতেন। কিন্তু তাঁর জীবনের একটি বড় কষ্ট ছিল—তিনি অনেক বৃদ্ধ হয়ে গিয়েছিলেন, অথচ তাঁর কোনো সন্তান ছিল না।
হযরত জাকারিয়া (আ.)-এর স্ত্রীও ছিলেন বৃদ্ধা এবং দীর্ঘদিন ধরে নিঃসন্তান। সাধারণ দৃষ্টিতে তাদের সন্তান হওয়ার কোনো সম্ভাবনা ছিল না। তবুও তিনি কখনো আল্লাহর রহমত থেকে নিরাশ হননি। বরং তিনি একান্ত মনে আল্লাহর কাছে দোয়া করতেন।
একদিন, তিনি মসজিদের ভেতরে দাঁড়িয়ে অত্যন্ত বিনয়ের সাথে দোয়া করলেন: "হে আমার রব! আমাকে আপনার পক্ষ থেকে একটি পবিত্র সন্তান দান করুন, যে আপনার সন্তুষ্টির পথে চলবে এবং আমার পরেও দ্বীনের দায়িত্ব পালন করবে।"
আল্লাহ তাঁর এই আন্তরিক দোয়া কবুল করলেন। ফেরেশতারা এসে তাঁকে সুসংবাদ দিলেন যে তাঁর একটি পুত্র সন্তান জন্ম নেবে, যার নাম হবে "ইয়াহিয়া"। এই নাম আগে কখনো কারো রাখা হয়নি—এটি ছিল আল্লাহর পক্ষ থেকে নির্ধারিত একটি বিশেষ নাম।
এই সংবাদ শুনে হযরত জাকারিয়া (আ.) বিস্মিত হয়ে গেলেন। তিনি বললেন, "হে আমার রব! আমি তো বৃদ্ধ, আর আমার স্ত্রীও বন্ধ্যা। তাহলে কীভাবে আমার সন্তান হবে?" আল্লাহ উত্তরে বললেন, "এটাই আমার ইচ্ছা। আমি যা চাই তা-ই করতে পারি।"
এই ঘটনাটি আমাদের শেখায়—মানুষ যতই অসহায় হোক না কেন, আল্লাহর ক্ষমতার কাছে কোনো কিছুই অসম্ভব নয়।
অবশেষে, আল্লাহর রহমতে হযরত ইয়াহিয়া (আলাইহিস সালাম)-এর জন্ম হলো। তাঁর জন্ম ছিল এক অলৌকিক নিদর্শন, যা মানুষকে আল্লাহর অসীম ক্ষমতার কথা স্মরণ করিয়ে দেয়।
শৈশব থেকেই ইয়াহিয়া (আ.) ছিলেন অত্যন্ত পবিত্র ও ভদ্র স্বভাবের। আল্লাহ তাঁকে ছোট বয়সেই বিশেষ জ্ঞান ও হিকমত দান করেছিলেন। কুরআনে উল্লেখ আছে যে, তাঁকে শিশু অবস্থাতেই "হিকমত" বা প্রজ্ঞা প্রদান করা হয়েছিল। এটি খুবই বিরল ঘটনা, কারণ সাধারণত মানুষ বড় হওয়ার পর জ্ঞান অর্জন করে।
তিনি কখনো খেলাধুলায় সময় নষ্ট করতেন না, বরং আল্লাহর ইবাদত, জ্ঞান অর্জন এবং মানুষের কল্যাণে নিজেকে নিয়োজিত রাখতেন। তাঁর চরিত্র ছিল অত্যন্ত কোমল ও দয়ালু। তিনি দরিদ্রদের সাহায্য করতেন, মানুষের প্রতি সদয় আচরণ করতেন এবং সর্বদা সত্য কথা বলতেন।
হযরত ইয়াহিয়া (আ.) তাঁর পিতা-মাতার প্রতিও ছিলেন অত্যন্ত অনুগত। তিনি কখনো তাঁদের অবাধ্য হননি। তিনি তাঁদের সাথে নম্রভাবে কথা বলতেন এবং তাঁদের সেবা করতেন। আল্লাহ তাঁকে এ জন্য প্রশংসা করেছেন—তিনি ছিলেন পিতা-মাতার প্রতি দয়ালু এবং অহংকারী ছিলেন না।
তাঁর জীবনের আরেকটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ দিক ছিল—তিনি অত্যন্ত সংযমী ছিলেন। তিনি দুনিয়ার ভোগ-বিলাস থেকে দূরে থাকতেন এবং সর্বদা আখিরাতের কথা চিন্তা করতেন। তাঁর মন ছিল আল্লাহর প্রতি নিবেদিত।
মানুষ যখন তাঁর চরিত্র ও আচরণ দেখত, তখন তারা মুগ্ধ হয়ে যেত। সবাই তাঁকে ভালোবাসত এবং সম্মান করত। তিনি ছোট বয়সেই মানুষের মাঝে একজন আদর্শ হিসেবে পরিচিত হয়ে উঠেছিলেন।
এই প্রথম পর্ব থেকে আমরা অনেক গুরুত্বপূর্ণ শিক্ষা পাই:
প্রথমত, আল্লাহর কাছে দোয়া করলে কখনো নিরাশ হওয়া উচিত নয়। হযরত জাকারিয়া (আ.) বৃদ্ধ হওয়া সত্ত্বেও দোয়া করেছিলেন এবং আল্লাহ তা কবুল করেছিলেন।
দ্বিতীয়ত, সন্তানের জন্য দোয়া করা এবং তাকে সৎ পথে গড়ে তোলা অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। ইয়াহিয়া (আ.)-এর মতো সন্তান সমাজের জন্য আশীর্বাদ।
তৃতীয়ত, ছোটবেলা থেকেই ভালো চরিত্র গড়ে তোলা উচিত। ইয়াহিয়া (আ.) আমাদের শেখান যে, বয়স কম হলেও একজন মানুষ সৎ, দয়ালু এবং জ্ঞানী হতে পারে।
চতুর্থত, দুনিয়ার প্রতি অতিরিক্ত আসক্ত না হয়ে আখিরাতের কথা চিন্তা করা উচিত।
