Chapter 9 - chapter nine

CHAPTER 9: The Truth They Tried to Bury

By midday, the calm Elara had woken up with was gone.

Replaced by unease.

Because peace—she was beginning to realize—never lasted long in her life.

She stood by the window in the living room, watching the twins play outside in the garden.

They laughed freely.

Carelessly.

Like nothing in the world could touch them.

Elara's chest tightened.

How did I walk away from them?

The question lingered painfully.

Even without memories—

Her heart didn't understand how she could have left.

"They've been quieter since you left the hospital."

Aiden's voice came from behind her.

She didn't turn.

"Quieter?" she asked softly.

"They kept asking if you were coming back," he said. "Every day."

Her throat tightened.

"And what did you tell them?"

A pause.

"The truth," he replied.

That made her turn.

"And what's that?"

His gaze met hers.

"That you would."

Her breath caught.

There was no doubt in his voice.

No hesitation.

Just certainty.

And for some reason—

That scared her.

Before she could respond—

The sharp sound of a car pulling into the driveway broke the moment.

Aiden's expression darkened instantly.

He moved toward the window.

His jaw tightened.

"They're here."

Elara's heart dropped.

She didn't need to ask who.

The front door opened before anyone could stop them.

"Elara!"

Sophia's voice echoed through the house.

Followed closely by another—

"Lara…"

Daniel.

Elara's entire body stiffened.

Her pulse quickened as footsteps approached rapidly.

Then they appeared.

Standing in the living room.

Looking exactly like the life she thought she had lost.

"Elara, thank God," Sophia rushed forward, her eyes filled with what looked like worry. "You left without saying anything—we were so scared!"

Daniel followed, his expression tense.

"Why are you here?" Elara asked quietly.

Her voice wasn't welcoming.

It wasn't warm.

And they noticed.

Sophia's smile faltered slightly.

"We came to take you home," she said gently. "You shouldn't be here."

Elara's gaze hardened.

"I am home."

The words slipped out before she could stop them.

The room went still.

Even she was surprised.

Aiden didn't say anything.

But something shifted in his expression.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Elara, you're confused," he said carefully. "You don't remember things properly. You shouldn't make decisions like this."

The same tone.

The same control.

And suddenly—

Elara heard it clearly.

The manipulation.

"I remember enough," she replied.

His jaw tightened.

"Then remember this," he said, his voice dropping slightly. "You were with me."

Past tense.

She caught it.

"So?" she asked quietly.

The question threw him off.

Sophia quickly stepped in.

"Elara, please," she said softly. "Don't do this. You're letting him confuse you."

She glanced briefly at Aiden.

Something sharp flickered in her eyes.

Fear?

Or guilt?

"No," Elara said, shaking her head slowly. "I think… I was confused before."

The words hit harder than she intended.

Sophia's face paled.

"Elara—"

"I remembered something," she cut in.

Silence fell instantly.

Daniel stiffened.

Sophia froze.

"I saw you," Elara continued, her voice trembling but firm. "Both of you."

No one spoke.

No one moved.

Because they knew.

"It wasn't a misunderstanding," she added. "Was it?"

Daniel looked away first.

And that—

That was all the confirmation she needed.

"It just happened," he muttered.

Elara blinked.

"It just… happened?"

Her voice cracked slightly.

"You don't plan betrayal," she continued bitterly. "You choose it."

Sophia stepped forward quickly.

"It wasn't like that!" she said. "We didn't mean for you to find out that way—"

"That way?" Elara let out a hollow laugh. "Is there a better way to walk in on your best friend and boyfriend together?"

The room fell silent again.

But this time—

It was suffocating.

"And the accident?"

The question cut through everything.

Sharp.

Direct.

Dangerous.

Elara's eyes locked onto Sophia.

Then Daniel.

"Was that also something that 'just happened'?"

Their reactions were immediate.

Too immediate.

"No!" Sophia said quickly. "Elara, we would never hurt you!"

"Then why does it feel like you already did?"

Her voice was quieter now.

But it hit deeper.

Aiden stepped forward slightly.

Not in front of her.

Not blocking her.

Just… there.

A silent support.

And Elara felt it.

"You should leave."

Aiden's voice was calm.

Controlled.

But final.

Daniel scoffed lightly.

"And you think you get to decide that?"

Aiden's gaze shifted to him slowly.

Cold.

Sharp.

"I don't think," he said quietly.

"I know."

Something in his tone made the air turn heavy.

Even Daniel felt it.

"Elara," Sophia tried again, her voice softer now, almost pleading. "We can fix this. Please… just come back with us."

Elara stared at her.

Really stared this time.

At the girl she trusted.

The girl she loved like family.

And now—

The girl she didn't recognize anymore.

"I did come back," Elara said softly.

Sophia's eyes lit up—

Until—

"But not to you."

The words shattered everything.

Silence.

Pure.

Devastating.

Silence.

Daniel clenched his fists.

"This isn't over," he said, his voice low.

Aiden didn't respond.

Didn't need to.

Because something had already shifted.

Elara stepped back.

Closer to Aiden.

Not touching.

But choosing.

And that—

That said more than anything else.

As Sophia and Daniel finally turned to leave—

Elara's chest tightened again.

Not with regret.

But with something else.

Something darker.

Because deep down—

She knew this wasn't the end.

It was just the beginning.
