CHAPTER 12: The War She Didn't Start
The air inside the room felt different.
Heavier.
Sharper.
Like something invisible had just shifted.
Elara stood still, her heart no longer racing—but steady.
Cold.
Focused.
The fear that once clouded her thoughts was gone.
Replaced by something far more dangerous.
Clarity.
"I want everything," she said.
Her voice didn't shake.
It didn't break.
It didn't plead.
It demanded.
Marcus and Aiden exchanged a brief glance.
Then Aiden stepped forward.
"You'll get it," he said.
No hesitation.
No doubt.
Just a promise.
"Start from the beginning," Elara added, her eyes fixed on Marcus. "I need to know what I was about to expose before the accident."
Marcus exhaled slowly.
"You were investigating something big," he said. "Something you weren't supposed to touch."
Elara frowned.
"What kind of 'something'?"
"Financial fraud," Aiden answered this time.
Her head turned toward him.
"What?"
His expression darkened.
"Daniel isn't just some ordinary man," he said. "He's connected to a network—money laundering, illegal deals, offshore accounts."
Elara's stomach twisted.
"That's… not possible…"
But even as she said it—
She remembered.
The late-night calls.
The secrecy.
The way Daniel always avoided certain questions.
"You found out," Aiden continued. "And you didn't stay quiet."
A faint pressure built in her head again.
Not pain.
Just… memory trying to surface.
"I confronted him," she whispered.
Marcus nodded.
"And that's when everything spiraled."
"They couldn't let you expose them," Aiden added. "Not when you had proof."
Elara's breath caught.
"Proof?"
"Yes."
Her heart began to race again.
"Where is it?"
Silence.
"We don't know."
The words hit harder than expected.
"You don't know?" she repeated, frustration rising.
"You hid it," Aiden said.
Her eyes widened.
"I… what?"
"You told me you had something they couldn't afford to lose," he continued. "But you didn't tell me where you kept it."
Elara's mind spun.
"I don't remember…"
"I know," he said softly.
But that wasn't enough.
Not anymore.
A sudden wave of frustration hit her.
She turned away, running her hands through her hair.
"This is useless," she muttered. "Everything I knew—everything I had—it's gone!"
"No," Aiden said firmly.
She stilled.
"It's not gone," he continued. "It's just hidden."
Elara turned back to him slowly.
"And what if I never find it?"
A beat of silence.
Then—
"Then we make them think you already have."
Her eyes widened slightly.
A slow realization began to form.
"You want to bait them…"
Aiden's gaze darkened.
"Yes."
"That's dangerous," Marcus said immediately.
Aiden didn't deny it.
"I know."
"They already tried to kill her once," Marcus pressed. "You really think they won't try again?"
A heavy silence followed.
Then—
Aiden stepped closer to Elara.
His voice lowered.
"They will."
No sugarcoating.
No lies.
Just truth.
Elara held his gaze.
"And you're still suggesting it?"
His answer came without hesitation.
"I'm suggesting we take control before they do."
Her heart skipped.
"You said you wanted to fight back," he added.
"I do."
"Then this is how."
The room fell silent again.
But this time—
It wasn't filled with fear.
It was filled with decision.
Elara took a slow breath.
Then nodded.
"Fine."
Marcus frowned.
"Elara—"
"No," she said firmly, cutting him off. "Running didn't protect me before. It won't protect me now."
Her gaze hardened.
"If they want to come after me… then let them."
A dangerous calm settled in her voice.
"Because this time…"
She took a step forward.
"…I'll be ready."
Aiden watched her carefully.
There was something new in his eyes now.
Not just concern.
Not just protection.
But respect.
"Then we do this properly," he said.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.
Within seconds, his tone shifted.
Cold.
Commanding.
Controlled.
"Eliminate all external access points," he said into the phone. "Double security. No one gets close without my approval."
A pause.
"And find Daniel."
His voice dropped.
"I want to know his next move before he makes it."
Elara watched him.
Really watched him.
And for the first time—
She saw it clearly.
This wasn't just a man.
This was power.
Influence.
Danger.
And somehow—
He was on her side.
"What about Sophia?" she asked quietly.
Aiden's expression darkened again.
"She's more involved than she looks."
Elara's chest tightened.
"I want to know everything she's hiding."
"You will."
Marcus stepped back slightly, shaking his head.
"This is bigger than you both think," he warned. "If this network is as deep as it looks…"
Aiden didn't let him finish.
"I'm counting on it."
Elara exhaled slowly.
Her heart was steady now.
Her thoughts clear.
Her fear—
Gone.
"Then let's begin," she said.
Outside, the night deepened.
The city moved on, unaware.
Unaware that a war had just begun.
A silent one.
A dangerous one.
And at the center of it—
Was a woman who had lost everything.
And was ready to take it all back.
