Chapter 3 - Awakening

Chapter 3: Awakening

Kayla couldn't sleep that night. Her mind was a storm of questions, fear, and confusion. She lay in her small bed, staring at the ceiling, the faint gold glow she had seen earlier still flickering behind her eyelids. Every time she closed her eyes, she felt it again—the power inside her, restless and impatient, like a caged animal demanding release. She rolled onto her side and pulled the blanket tighter around herself, but it offered no comfort. A soft knock at the window made her jump. Her heart slammed against her ribs. Slowly, she crawled to the edge of the bed and peered out. Jamie was there, crouched on the windowsill, his dark eyes glinting in the moonlight. "Don't scream," he whispered. "I won't hurt you." "Why are you here?" she demanded, though her voice trembled. "It's late." "I needed to see you," he said. "Tonight… it was only the beginning. You felt your power for the first time. It's awakening faster than I expected. You need guidance, and I'm the only one who can help you control it—for now." Kayla stared at him, fear and disbelief warring in her chest. "Control it? I almost killed something out there!" "That thing was a shadow sent to test you," Jamie explained. "It wasn't alive like you, but it can harm you if you're unprepared. You have power that most can't even imagine, Kayla. It's dangerous, yes—but it's also a weapon. And you need to learn to wield it before others find you." "I don't want this! I don't want to be special! I just want my life back!" Her voice broke. "I'm tired of running, tired of hiding, tired of… everything!" Jamie's expression softened, but his eyes remained serious. "You don't have a choice. Not anymore. They're coming for you. The people who stole your kingdom—they'll stop at nothing to take you again. To destroy you. And this time… you might not survive unless you embrace who you are." Kayla shook her head, tears blurring her vision. "I don't even know who I am!" "You're Kayla," he said firmly, "but also more. You're the rightful queen, and your power is tied to that truth. You can't deny it forever." A sudden gust of wind rattled the window, and the candle on her bedside table flickered violently. Kayla instinctively reached toward it, and a small flame danced in her palm. She gasped and dropped it immediately, staring at her hand as it glowed faintly in the dark. Jamie's eyes widened slightly. "Good. That's the first sign of control. Not perfect, but a start." Kayla stumbled back, her mind spinning. "I—I can't do this. I don't even understand what it is!" "You will," he promised. "I'll help you. But first, you need to accept that you are not just an ordinary girl. You're a queen. And with that comes responsibility, power… and danger." Kayla shook her head again, but this time more slowly. Deep inside, she felt a spark of something—defiance, maybe, or curiosity. Something that told her she couldn't run from this forever. "What happens if I fail?" she asked quietly. Jamie stepped closer, placing a hand gently on her shoulder. "You won't. I'll make sure of it. But you have to try. You have to fight, Kayla, or they'll take everything from you again." She swallowed hard, the weight of his words settling over her like a cloak. She wanted to argue, to deny it, to run—but a part of her, the part that had always felt out of place, stirred at the thought of finally belonging somewhere. Finally, she nodded, barely. "Okay… I'll try." Jamie's lips curved into a faint smile. "That's all I ask for now. One step at a time. Tonight, rest. Tomorrow, we begin your training." Kayla lay back down, her heart still racing, her mind a whirlwind of fear and determination. She didn't know what tomorrow would bring, or who she would become, but one thing was certain: her life had changed forever. Outside, the night was quiet. Too quiet. But somewhere in the shadows, unseen eyes watched, waiting. And this time, they would not make the mistake of underestimating her.
