Chapter 4 - First Lesson

Chapter 4: First Lesson

The next morning, Kayla woke with a heavy weight pressing on her chest. The sunlight streaming through the window felt harsh, almost accusing, and the memory of last night's power surge still burned in her mind. She dressed quickly, avoiding her reflection in the mirror. She didn't want to see the glow, didn't want to remind herself that her life had changed forever. Jamie was already waiting outside, leaning against the wall with his usual calm expression. "Morning," he said. "You slept?" "Not really," she muttered, rubbing her eyes. "I can't stop thinking about last night." He nodded, serious. "Good. That means you're ready to begin." Kayla froze. "Ready? Ready for what?" He gestured for her to follow, and she obeyed, curiosity mixed with fear. They walked through the quiet streets to a secluded park at the edge of town. The trees were dense, the air thick and almost electric. Jamie stopped in a clearing, facing her. "This is your first lesson," he said. "Controlling the energy inside you." Kayla swallowed, shaking. "Energy? You mean that thing I almost lost control of?" "Yes," he said. "And if you don't learn to control it, it could destroy you or the people around you." She looked around nervously, imagining a repeat of last night. "How do I control it?" Jamie studied her closely. "Focus. The power is part of you. It responds to your mind, your emotions, your will. If you panic or resist, it fights back. If you accept it and direct it, it obeys." Kayla shivered. "Okay… and you think I can do that?" He nodded. "I know you can. But it won't be easy." He stepped back, giving her space. "Close your eyes." Kayla hesitated, then obeyed. She felt the air against her skin, the faint hum in the earth beneath her feet. Slowly, she let her thoughts drift. The fear, the doubt, the anger—they all bubbled up, and she tried to push them down. The power inside her stirred. A warmth spread from her chest to her fingers. Her breath quickened. "Good," Jamie said softly. "Now, focus on one thing. A single flame." Kayla concentrated. She pictured a small candle in her mind. She extended her hand, palm open. A tiny flicker appeared, hovering just above her skin. Her eyes shot open. "I did it!" she whispered. The flame wavered, almost dying, then steadied. Jamie smiled. "Not bad for your first try. It will get stronger, but you need to practice constantly. This is only the beginning, Kayla. The awakening has started, and there's no turning back." Her heart pounded, but something inside her thrilled. She wasn't just a girl anymore. She was something more. And though fear still gripped her, excitement followed closely behind. Today, she had learned that she could be powerful. Tomorrow… she would learn that being powerful came with a price.
