Chapter 10 - The City Chooses Sides

The Broken City had entered its third day.

Food was running low.

Water was harder to find.

Sleep was dangerous.

Trust was disappearing.

And fear…

Fear was everywhere.

But fear did not control everyone.

Because now, the city was beginning to split into two sides.

Not officially.

Not by rule.

But by belief.

Two Ideologies

Some challengers began to move toward Silas Mord.

Why?

Because Silas offered logic.

"Only two people can leave."

"Stay with me, and I will make sure you are one of them."

"Follow my plan, and you might survive."

His group grew again.

Seven became eight.

Eight became nine.

Some joined because they were scared.

Some joined because they were selfish.

Some joined because they believed Silas was right.

Meanwhile, something unexpected was happening on the other side of the city.

People were starting to look for Astra Vale.

Not because she promised survival.

But because she helped people even when it didn't benefit her.

She shared food.

She treated wounds.

She told people the truth:

"I can't promise you that you'll survive."

"But I can promise you that you won't be used."

And strangely…

That was enough.

Astra's Group

Astra did not build a group like Silas did.

She did not recruit.

She did not persuade.

She did not make speeches.

People simply chose to walk with her.

After some time, Astra's group had five people:

Astra Vale

The wounded man she helped earlier — Rian Holt

A quiet sniper-type woman — Mira Kade

A large, heavily built miner from a gravity world — Doran Vex

A young tech specialist — Lio Renn

They sat inside an old apartment building, sharing a small amount of food.

Lio was working on a broken communication device.

"I think I can fix this," Lio said. "If we can communicate across the city, we can avoid Silas."

Mira, who had been silent most of the time, finally spoke.

"You don't avoid a man like Silas," she said quietly.

"You either join him… or you defeat him."

Doran cracked his knuckles. "Then we defeat him."

Rian looked nervous. "He has more people than us."

Astra looked at all of them.

"This isn't about numbers," she said.

Then she looked out the window at the ruined city.

"This is about what kind of people we become to survive."

Silas's Group

On the other side of the city, Silas sat at a large table inside an abandoned restaurant.

Nine people were in the room.

Food and water were placed on the table, but no one was eating.

They were waiting for Silas to speak.

That alone showed how much control he had.

"There are now two groups in this city," Silas said calmly.

"Ours… and Astra Vale's."

One man asked, "When do we attack them?"

Silas shook his head.

"We don't attack yet."

A woman in the group frowned. "Why not? We have more people."

Silas folded his hands.

"Because Astra's group is not built on logic," he said.

"It's built on belief."

He looked around the table.

"And belief is harder to break than bones."

Control Room — Kael Watches

Bronn looked at the two groups on the map.

"This is no longer a dungeon," Bronn said.

Kael replied:

"No. Now it's a war."

Bronn looked at him. "You planned this from the start, didn't you?"

Kael didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

"Silas represents control through fear and survival."

"Astra represents control through trust and belief."

He zoomed the map out so the entire Broken City was visible.

"I needed to know which one people would choose… when death was real."

Bronn asked quietly:

"And what are they choosing?"

Kael looked at the two groups moving through the city.

Then he said:

"They're choosing hope."

Phase Three Announcement

Suddenly, the system voice echoed across the entire city:

"Phase Three Activated."

"New Rule: Group Clearance Allowed."

"If two groups reach the Core Tower together, a vote will be held."

"The group will choose which two people leave."

The entire city went silent.

This changed everything.

Now it wasn't just survival.

Now it was democracy.

Or something much more dangerous.

Astra's Reaction

Lio dropped the communication device in shock. "A vote?! That's insane!"

Rian looked pale. "People will just vote for their friends…"

Mira spoke quietly. "Or for the strongest."

Doran looked at Astra. "Or for the leader."

Everyone slowly looked at Astra.

She immediately shook her head.

"No," she said.

"If we reach that tower… we vote fairly."

Rian asked quietly, "And what if they vote for you?"

Astra didn't answer for a few seconds.

Then she said something that surprised everyone.

"Then I'll refuse."

Silas's Reaction

Silas smiled when he heard the new rule.

"A vote," he said softly.

"Architect… you really are interesting."

One of his group members asked, "Isn't this bad for us?"

Silas shook his head.

"No," he said.

"This is perfect."

He stood up and walked toward the window.

"Because when people are given a choice…" he said calmly,

"…they reveal who they really are."

Night Before the Final Phase

That night, both groups were moving toward the Core Tower.

They knew the final confrontation was coming.

In Astra's group, people were nervous but determined.

In Silas's group, people were quiet and tense.

And high above the city, in the control room, Kael Veyron watched everything.

Bronn asked one final question:

"What if both of them reach the tower?"

Kael answered:

"Then this game will end the way it was always meant to end."

Bronn frowned. "Which is?"

Kael looked at the Core Tower screen.

"Not with a fight," he said.

"But with a choice."

Final Scene — The Core Tower

The Core Tower stood in the center of the city, tall and dark, like a judge waiting to give a sentence.

From the east side of the city, Astra and her group approached.

From the west side, Silas and his group approached.

Both groups saw the tower at the same time.

Both groups knew the other side was coming.

Astra looked at her team.

"Whatever happens in that tower," she said, "don't become monsters just to survive."

Silas looked at his group and said something very different:

"Remember… only two people leave.

Make sure… one of them is you."

Two groups.

Thirteen people.

One tower.

One vote.

Two survivors.

And a choice that would decide everything.
