On the Way Home
The car moved quietly along the road, but in my heart... it still hadn't left Yui's house.
Outside the window, the world passed by slowly — trees, lights, buildings — all drifting like clouds.
But my eyes weren't really seeing them.
They were still filled with Yui.
I rested my head against the window, warm from the inside, and thought about everything —
The gift that i drew.
The cupcakes.
The way she had said thank you with her whole heart.
The way we laughed while Bunny and Shiba played on the rug.
And the moment her arms wrapped around me in that tight, bright hug.
Her face appeared in my mind — soft cheeks round like mochi, eyes full of sparkle, her ponytail bouncing, and her pink dress puffing like a princess cloud.
It was all still there...
Inside me.
Not fading. Not slipping away.
Just sitting softly — like a warm light in the corner of my heart.
I hugged Shiba closer to my chest and closed my eyes.
The car kept driving forward.
But my thoughts stayed wrapped in that memory...
Of a perfect day,
A beautiful friend,
And a promise that we'd meet again soon.
As the car moved through the sleeping city, I began to hum.
Not a real song.
Just something soft.
Something from inside.
A little melody, floating from my heart to my lips — the kind that only comes when you feel too much to speak.
I didn't know where it came from.
I just hummed, holding Shiba close, still full of thoughts about Yui... her birthday... our play... her hug.
It all mixed together into this tiny tune —
A memory turned into music.
From the front seats, Mama and Papa peeked back at me.
They didn't say anything.
But I saw them smile quietly at each other — the kind of smile that doesn't need words.
And then...
It came.
Out there — rising from the dark corners of Tokyo —
a light.
At first, just a spark.
A soft sound, like a whisper — sssssshhh.
Like it was calling to us.
My eyes caught it — and my finger pointed fast.
"Mamaaa... Papaaa... Hanabiii!" I cried, pressing my face to the window.
Papa rolled it down gently.
The cold air kissed my cheeks — and then the sky answered.
A bright beam shot upward — slicing the night like a promise.
And for a second, everything stopped.
No sound. No movement. Just eyes watching.
Waiting.
Then...
BOOM.
It bloomed.
A flower made of light.
Right there in the middle of the night sky —
it opened wide, full of color and thunder.
Pink and gold.
Blue and silver.
Sparkling like stars that couldn't wait for morning.
I couldn't blink.
Because this wasn't just fireworks.
This was hanabi.
Fire flowers.
They didn't just light the sky.
They lit our hearts.
The way they rose quietly — then bloomed loudly —
like they were asking us to follow them.
To wonder.
To feel.
And I did.
Right then, I felt like the whole world was celebrating.
Not just the end of a year.
But a wish.
A promise.
A song.
Something tickled my heart.
Like a tiny whisper I couldn't quite hear —
but I felt it.
The fireworks weren't just loud or bright.
They were telling me something.
Something I didn't fully understand...
But I almost did.
They rose gently... like they were calling.
Then they waited.
Then they bloomed — big and brilliant —
And in that moment, I knew:
That's how you make someone fall in love with a moment.
You don't rush.
You call softly.
You let them wonder.
And then...
you bloom.
And from that hanabi, I think...
I learned something.
Like a tiny bit of light slipped into my heart and made it glow.
Then I looked out the window again...
and I wondered—
Is Yui watching the same sky as me?
Is she looking up at this very same firework?
Thinking of today?
Thinking of me, like I'm thinking of her?
My heart felt warm...
like maybe... just maybe...
somewhere under the same sky,
Yui was smiling too.
The fireworks kept blooming in the sky...
but slowly, my eyes grew heavy.
The world outside the window turned soft and blurry,
like a watercolor dream.
I hugged Shiba close to my chest,
his fur warm beneath my fingers.
My head leaned against the seat...
and the gentle hum of the car became a lullaby.
My heart was still full—
of cupcakes and pink dresses,
of singing and drawing,
of Yui's smile when she said thank you...
and her hug that felt like forever.
And then,
as the fireworks faded in the distance—
so did the world.
My eyes closed by themselves.
Softly. Quietly.
And I drifted into sleep...
...dreaming of Yui.
