Chapter 9 - Chapter 9 — Blood That Calls to Power

Ashen Hollow did not sleep the way normal settlements did, because even as the sky darkened and the faint glow of firelight replaced the sun, the place only seemed to grow more alive, as deals were made in quiet corners, fights broke out and ended just as quickly, and shadows moved with purpose, each carrying secrets that could shape life or end it without warning.

Kael stood near the edge of a raised platform overlooking part of the settlement, his eyes moving slowly as he observed everything around him, taking in the patterns, the movements, and the unspoken rules that governed the place, because even without being told, he could feel that survival here required more than strength—it required awareness.

Mira approached from behind, carrying two small pieces of roasted meat wrapped in cloth, and without saying anything, she tossed one toward him.

"You'll need it," she said.

Kael caught it easily.

"…thanks."

They sat in silence for a moment, eating as they watched the activity below, the tension between them less sharp now, replaced by something quieter—understanding.

"You handled yourself well today," Mira said after a while.

Kael shrugged slightly.

"I've fought worse."

Mira glanced at him.

"…not like that," she said, "those weren't wild enemies, they were trained, and you still stood your ground."

Kael didn't respond immediately, his thoughts drifting briefly to the moment his power had surged again, the way the air had shifted around him, and how easily things could have gone wrong.

"…I'm still not in control," he admitted.

Mira nodded.

"I noticed," she said.

Kael let out a quiet breath.

"…does that make me a problem?"

Mira looked at him carefully.

"It makes you dangerous," she said, "and in a place like this, that can either protect you… or get you killed."

An Offer in the Shadows

Not long after, as the night deepened and the crowd shifted toward quieter activities, a figure approached them, moving with a calm confidence that made it clear they were not just another fighter passing through.

"You're the one from earlier."

Kael looked up.

The man who had stopped the fight stood before them again, his posture relaxed but his presence steady, as if nothing in the area could surprise him.

Mira straightened slightly.

"…you need something?" she asked.

The man's gaze remained on Kael.

"I'm offering something," he said.

Kael raised an eyebrow.

"…what kind of something?"

The man folded his arms.

"A place," he replied, "training, resources, and protection from those who would rather deal with you before you become a problem."

Kael's expression didn't change.

"…and what do you get?"

A faint smile appeared on the man's face.

"Loyalty," he said, "and your strength when the time comes."

Mira frowned.

"…you're recruiting now?"

The man glanced at her briefly.

"I recognize potential when I see it," he said, then returned his attention to Kael, "and you… are not normal."

Kael let out a quiet breath.

"I've heard that before."

"I'm sure you have," the man replied, "but not from someone who understands what it means."

Silence followed as Kael considered the offer, weighing the benefits against the risk, because while the promise of strength and knowledge was tempting, he had already learned that nothing in this world came without a price.

"…who are you?" Kael asked.

The man's expression remained calm.

"My name is Darius," he said, "and I lead one of the factions here in Ashen Hollow."

Mira's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…the Iron Circle."

Darius gave a small nod.

"We don't take in just anyone," he added, "but when we do… they don't stay weak for long."

Kael looked at him for a moment longer, then spoke.

"…I'll think about it."

Darius smiled faintly.

"Do that," he said, turning to leave, "but don't take too long… decisions made too late tend to be made for you."

As he disappeared back into the crowd, the tension he left behind lingered.

Mira's Past

"You shouldn't trust him."

Mira's voice came quickly, sharper than before.

Kael glanced at her.

"I don't trust anyone," he said.

"Good," Mira replied, "because people like him don't offer help without a reason."

Kael leaned back slightly.

"…you've dealt with them before."

Mira hesitated.

Then nodded.

"My family was part of a smaller faction once," she said, her voice quieter now, "we weren't strong, but we had enough to survive."

Kael listened.

"Then one day, a larger group came," she continued, "they offered protection, just like he did… and when my family refused…"

She stopped.

Her hands tightened slightly.

"They didn't ask again."

Silence followed.

Kael's expression darkened.

"…they killed them."

Mira nodded once.

"I survived because I wasn't there," she said, "and ever since then… I don't trust offers like that."

Kael looked away briefly.

"…then why stay here?"

Mira let out a quiet breath.

"Because running forever doesn't change anything," she said, "and if I'm going to survive in this world, I need to understand it."

Kael nodded slightly.

"…then we'll figure it out."

Mira glanced at him.

"…we?"

Kael met her gaze.

"You said it yourself," he replied, "we survive better together."

For a moment, Mira said nothing.

Then—

"…fine," she said quietly.

The Hunter Reveals Himself

Elsewhere in Ashen Hollow, far from the main activity, the mysterious figure who had been tracking Kael stood in a dimly lit space, their presence calm but focused as they observed the settlement from a distance.

"So it's him," they murmured, their voice low and thoughtful.

A second figure stepped out from the shadows behind them.

"You're certain?" they asked.

The first figure nodded.

"The energy matches," they replied, "it's faint… but it's there."

The second figure's expression darkened.

"…then we shouldn't wait."

"Agreed," the first said, "but we move carefully… if we act too soon, we might draw attention we don't want."

The second figure smirked slightly.

"…or we could test him."

The first figure considered this.

Then nodded.

"…a small push," they said, "nothing that reveals too much."

They turned toward the direction of Kael's location.

"Let's see how much of that power he can actually use."

A Truth Begins to Surface

Back at their resting place, as the night grew quieter and the fires burned lower, Kael sat alone again, his thoughts drifting deeper than before as Mira slept nearby, her breathing steady despite the dangers around them.

He stared at his hands.

At the faint marks left behind from training and battle.

At the strength he had gained…

And the power he still didn't understand.

"…gods…" he whispered.

The word felt heavy.

Familiar.

Dangerous.

"…why does it feel like I already know them…"

A faint breeze moved through the air.

Cold.

Unnatural.

Kael's body tensed instantly.

Something was wrong.

He stood slowly, his senses sharpening as the quiet around him shifted into something far more dangerous.

Then—

A voice.

Soft.

Close.

"You ask the right questions…"

Kael spun around.

But no one was there.

"…who's there?" he demanded.

Silence.

Then again—

"Yet you're not ready for the answers."

Kael's heart pounded.

"…show yourself!"

A shadow moved.

And then—

A figure stepped forward from the darkness, their face partially hidden, their presence calm but overwhelming in a way Kael had never felt before.

"You carry something you don't understand," the figure said.

Kael's golden eye flickered.

"…what do you know about me?"

The figure smiled faintly.

"More than you know about yourself."

Kael tightened his grip.

"…then tell me."

The figure's eyes glinted.

"…you were never meant to live."

Silence.

Those words hit deeper than any blade.

Kael's voice dropped.

"…I already know that."

The figure stepped closer.

"Do you?" they asked quietly, "or do you only know the surface of it?"

Kael didn't respond.

"…your blood," the figure continued, "it doesn't belong to this world."

Kael's breath slowed.

"…what are you?"

The figure paused.

Then spoke.

"Someone sent to see if you're worth keeping alive."

The air grew heavy.

And for the first time since entering Ashen Hollow…

Kael felt something he had not felt in a long time.

Not fear.

But something close to it.

Because deep down…

He knew.

This encounter…

Would change everything.
