Caro, what is this?" Peter's voice cut through the quiet of the office like a whip. He didn't raise his voice, but the edge in it made her stomach seize. He gestured at the tablet before him, headlines glaring up at her like accusations.
"I… I don't know," Caro whispered, her fingers trembling. "I didn't post anything. I swear, I—"
"Didn't post? No, Caro. The world sees it anyway," Peter interrupted, stepping closer, his dark eyes piercing. "Do you realize what they're saying about you? About us?"
"They're… lying," she said, voice barely audible. "It's just gossip. I didn't" Her words faltered as she struggled to maintain composure. "Peter, I'm not… not like that. I haven't done anything wrong."
"Not like that?" he repeated, his tone sharp now. "Caro, they saw your hand on me, your face… this moment captured. Explain it." He leaned over the desk, jaw tight, and the air between them felt electric.
"I… I—" she started, then paused, searching for words that could untangle the web of perception she had never meant to create. "It was… it was a misunderstanding. I didn't mean for it to be seen that way. I—"
"A misunderstanding?" Peter's laugh was short, humorless. "Caro, a misunderstanding in the public eye can ruin reputations. Mine, yours, everything. Do you understand the consequences?"
"Yes!" she blurted, a tremor in her voice. "I understand, and I'm… I'm sorry! I didn't plan for any of this, Peter. You know me, I'm not like that. I—" Her hands shook as she clutched the edge of the desk, trying to keep herself from collapsing under the weight of his gaze.
Peter leaned back slightly, eyes narrowing. "Do you?" he asked quietly, every word deliberate. "Do you truly understand what this means for us? For me?"
"I… I do," Caro whispered. "I didn't choose the cameras. I didn't… I never meant to embarrass you. I care" She stopped herself, realizing how dangerous that confession sounded at the wrong moment.
"Care?" Peter's voice dropped, softer now but still cutting through her defenses. "You mean to say this was about feelings? About… wanting to be near me?" His eyes searched hers, dark, calculating, terrifying.
"No!" she protested, shaking her head. "I mean… I didn't… It's not like that. I only meant to…" Her words dissolved as his gaze pinned her, unyielding. "Peter, I… please. You have to believe me."
"I want to," he said slowly, his jaw tightening. "But right now, the world doesn't. And I can't afford mistakes, Caro. Do you hear me? One misstep, one misinterpreted move, and…" His voice trailed, heavy with threat. "Everything we've built can collapse."
"I know," she whispered, swallowing hard. "I know. I won't" Her fingers curled into fists at her sides. "I won't let it happen. I… I won't make this worse."
Peter paused, studying her like she was a puzzle he needed to solve. "Caro," he said finally, quieter now, almost intimate. "There's more at stake than your reputation. Or mine. If anyone finds out what's really going on…" His words hung in the room, unspoken, terrifying in their implication.
"Peter…" Her voice faltered. "What do you mean? What could they possibly?" She swallowed, but he didn't answer immediately, letting the tension build until it felt unbearable.
"You'll see soon enough," he said, voice dropping to a whisper. "But I need you to be ready. No distractions. No mistakes. Because once the truth surfaces… nothing will protect you. Not even me."
Caro's heart thudded violently. "Ready for what?" she demanded, panic lacing her tone. "What truth? Peter, you're scaring me!"
"I'm telling you now so you don't panic when it happens," he replied, stepping closer, the air thick with unspoken danger. "When the world sees the story they were never meant to see… when they learn who you really are… you have to be prepared. Can you handle that?"
"I… I will," she said, teeth clenched, trying to steady herself. "I don't know how, but I will. I promise."
Peter studied her for a long moment, silence stretching like a taut wire between them. Then, almost imperceptibly, he smirked. "Good. Because what comes next… will change everything. And Caro…" His voice dropped lower, a growl just for her. "They won't see it coming. But you will. And you may not survive unscathed."
Caro's breath caught in her throat, pulse hammering. "Peter… what"
He raised a hand, cutting her off, dark eyes glinting. "Not yet. Just know… the game has begun. And every move you make from now on could be the one that saves or destroys us both."
The tablet glared at her from the desk, the headlines still screaming their lies. And in that instant, Caro understood: nothing in Peter Shey's world was ever simple. And nothing, not even her heart, would remain safe.
