Chapter 9 - Chapter 9 – The Rival Appears

Peter," a voice slid across the lobby like silk over steel. Caro froze, her stomach knotting instantly. "Isabella," he said, tone controlled, calm, but every syllable carried the weight of a warning.

"You must be Caro Beri," Isabella said, stepping forward, eyes sharp, scanning Caro as if she were both curious and threatening. "I've heard so much about you." Her smile was casual, but the glint in her eyes suggested amusement and danger.

"I… it's nice to meet you," Caro stammered, forcing her lips into a polite curve. Her pulse raced, each beat pounding against the rising tension she could feel in Peter's posture.

"Oh, I hope the rumors are true," Isabella said softly, voice lilting with mischief. "It would be terribly disappointing if they weren't." She let the words hang, heavy with insinuation, and Caro felt every second stretch unbearably.

Peter's jaw tightened. "Caro has nothing to do with gossip," he said, voice low, measured, but icy. His hand hovered subtly near hers, a shadow of protection that was also a warning: one misstep and Isabella would strike.

"Really, Peter," Isabella replied lightly, tilting her head, eyes flicking to him and then back to Caro, "you're always so… careful. But tell me, how does one keep secrets in a place like this? Secrets that can ruin even the most controlled man?"

Caro's chest tightened, and she forced a steady breath. "Peter… what does she mean?" Her voice trembled despite her efforts. Every glance Isabella cast her way felt like a test, a probe meant to uncover weakness.

"She's testing," Peter said softly, but his voice carried steel beneath the calm. "And you're the target. Don't answer. Don't give her anything." His eyes drilled into hers, warning, protective, yet simmering with an intensity that made her knees threaten to buckle.

"Testing?" Isabella said, a laugh escaping her lips, light but venomous. "No, Peter, I'm not testing. I'm simply… curious. I wonder what someone like her is hiding. I wonder how far she'll go to survive."

Caro's hands clenched into fists at her sides. "I… I don't know what she means," she whispered, trying to sound calm, though her voice betrayed her. She hated how vulnerable she felt under Isabella's gaze.

Peter's eyes narrowed. "She knows enough to be dangerous," he said, each word deliberate. "And if she senses anything… anything at all, it could cost more than you think."

"Dangerous?" Caro's voice rose slightly, a mix of fear and frustration. "Peter, I can't let her intimidate me. I won't"

"Caro," he interrupted, his tone dropping, commanding, a growl threading through the calm. "You will not act. Not yet. You survive by restraint, by silence. Do you understand me?"

"Yes," she whispered, swallowing hard. "I… I understand. I'll be careful."

Isabella smirked, a subtle, almost predatory curl of her lips. "Oh, I like her," she said softly, more to herself than anyone. "She has spirit. But… we'll see how long it lasts." She pivoted on her heels, and the sharp click of her heels echoed like a verdict in the sleek lobby.

Peter exhaled slowly once she left, but the tension didn't dissipate. He turned to Caro, dark eyes blazing. "She knows more than she should," he said, voice low, but every word pressed against her chest like a weight. "And she'll be watching you. Always."

"I—" Caro began, but the words caught in her throat. Her pulse raced, her hands shook, and the fear that Isabella could uncover her secret made her chest tighten painfully.

"You don't speak," Peter said, his tone final, commanding, yet softer at the edges. "You observe. You survive. Because if you slip…" His gaze darkened, ominous. "If you slip, Caro, it won't just be rumors that destroy you. It will be her."

Caro's throat went dry, every nerve alive with tension. "I… I'll be ready," she whispered, though the uncertainty clawed at her.

"Good," he said, turning toward the elevator that had swallowed Isabella. "Because she won't stop. And neither will the consequences she carries."

The elevator doors slid shut, leaving Caro alone with the weight of Peter's warning, the echo of Isabella's smirk still fresh in her mind. And in that heartbeat of silence, Caro realized: surviving Peter's world wasn't just about obedience or secrets anymore, it was about outlasting a rival who already knew too much.
