Chapter 276 - Chapter 276: The War of Possibilities

Darkness swallowed everything.

For a moment, Ayan could neither see nor hear.

There was no ground beneath his feet, no sensation of wind against his skin, and no weight in his body. He felt as though he had been suspended in an endless space where even time had stopped moving. Then, slowly, sound returned.

First came a heartbeat.

Boom.

Then another.

Boom.

Then thousands.

Boom. Boom. Boom.

Ayan opened his eyes.

The world before him had changed.

The ruined city was still there, but it no longer looked like a single place. Layers of different landscapes overlapped across one another. A broken tower existed beside a forest that had never existed in this world. A river flowed through the middle of a street before suddenly becoming a desert. Buildings appeared and disappeared with every passing second, as though reality itself couldn't decide which version of the world was supposed to exist.

And standing in the middle of that impossible landscape was an army.

Ayan's army.

Hundreds of them.

Thousands.

Every one of them had his face.

Some looked young. Some looked older. Some were scarred. Others wore armor. A few looked almost exactly like the Ayan standing at the center of the ruined city. Others were so different that they barely looked human anymore.

One version had glowing red eyes and black horns growing from his forehead. Another wore white robes covered in strange symbols. One was dressed like a soldier, carrying a massive sword across his shoulder. Another had no visible weapon at all, yet the air around him twisted continuously.

They stood silently.

Watching.

Waiting.

At the front of the army stood the Ayan holding the black crown.

He looked almost ordinary.

That was what made him frightening.

His clothes were simple. His dark hair was slightly messy. His face carried the same tired expression Ayan had seen in mirrors countless times.

But his eyes were different.

They were completely black.

The black-crowned Ayan slowly placed the crown upon his head.

The moment it touched his hair, the entire seventh door shook.

Seraphine stepped closer to Ayan.

Her breathing was steady, but her fingers had tightened around her weapon.

"How many are there?"

Ayan stared at the army.

"I don't know."

Mira's voice came from behind them.

"Too many."

Maren swallowed.

"They're all him."

Doctor Rowan stared at the different versions with an expression Ayan had never seen on him before.

Fear.

Not fear of death.

Fear of understanding.

"The possibilities."

Ayan glanced at him.

"What?"

Rowan pointed toward the army.

"Each one is a different outcome."

The black-crowned Ayan smiled.

"Exactly."

His voice echoed across the city.

"Every decision creates a possibility. Every possibility creates another version of you. Every version eventually reaches the same conclusion."

Ayan raised his weapon.

"And what's that?"

The black-crowned version looked directly at him.

"That the world is too cruel to leave its fate to chance."

Ayan's expression hardened.

"So you want to control it."

"No."

The other Ayan's smile disappeared.

"I want to become it."

The black crown pulsed.

The sky cracked.

Seven enormous doors appeared above the city.

Each one showed a different world.

Ayan could see oceans stretching across entire continents.

Cities made of crystal.

Forests filled with enormous creatures.

Dead worlds covered in ash.

Worlds where humans had never existed.

And worlds where Ayan himself had become something far greater than human.

The black-crowned Ayan raised one hand.

"Every version of us reached the same crossroads."

The army behind him began moving.

Not attacking.

Simply walking forward.

"Some tried to save everyone."

"Some chose their own worlds."

"Some destroyed the Observer."

"Some became servants of it."

"And some..."

He looked at Ayan.

"...became the Observer."

Ayan's eyes narrowed.

"You're one of them."

The other Ayan smiled.

"Yes."

The words sent a chill through the group.

Seraphine looked at Ayan.

"Then the Observer..."

"Is one of us."

Ayan understood.

The golden eye that had been watching them wasn't some ancient creature completely unrelated to humanity.

It had once been a Key.

An Ayan.

A version that had crossed the final boundary and become something that existed outside the worlds.

The black-crowned Ayan spread his arms.

"We are not fighting an enemy."

He looked toward the army.

"We are fighting ourselves."

The first soldier stepped forward.

Ayan recognized him.

It was a version of himself carrying a silver sword.

He looked younger.

His face was calm.

"Who are you?"

The soldier answered.

"The Ayan who chose power."

He raised his sword.

"I conquered my world."

Another stepped forward.

"I chose knowledge."

A third.

"I chose revenge."

A fourth.

"I chose love."

A fifth.

"I chose nothing."

One by one, they spoke.

"I became a king."

"I became a monster."

"I became a god."

"I became the First Heart."

"I became the Observer."

Ayan's expression became darker with every answer.

These weren't merely copies.

They were possibilities.

Every path he could have taken.

Every version of himself that might have existed if one choice had been different.

Seraphine stepped beside him.

"Then they aren't your enemies."

Ayan looked at her.

"What?"

"They're you."

She looked toward the army.

"And if they're truly different possibilities, then some of them must have made different choices."

Ayan's eyes widened slightly.

She was right.

Not every possibility could have chosen the same path.

Some might have found another way.

Some might have succeeded where others failed.

Ayan looked at the black-crowned version.

"You said every version reached the same conclusion."

"Yes."

"You're lying."

The black-crowned Ayan's smile faded.

Ayan raised his weapon.

"If every version became the same thing, there would be no reason for you to gather them."

The other Ayan remained silent.

Ayan continued.

"You gathered them because they disagree."

The black crown pulsed.

"You think you're different."

"I know I am."

"Then prove it."

The black-crowned Ayan lowered his hand.

The army stopped.

One warrior stepped forward.

He carried no weapon.

His body was covered in scars.

His eyes were silver.

Ayan immediately felt something familiar.

The Bridge reacted.

This version was different.

The warrior looked at him.

"Don't fight."

Ayan frowned.

"What?"

The warrior turned toward the black-crowned Ayan.

"You know what happens if he fights."

The black-crowned Ayan's expression became cold.

"You betrayed us."

The silver-eyed Ayan shook his head.

"No."

He looked at Ayan.

"I remembered."

Ayan felt a strange connection.

"Who are you?"

The warrior answered.

"The one who refused to become the Observer."

The black-crowned Ayan moved.

He raised his hand.

A black spear formed from the air and shot toward the silver-eyed warrior.

Ayan reacted instantly.

He extended the Bridge.

The spear stopped.

The impact shook the entire street.

The black-crowned Ayan's eyes narrowed.

"You really are different."

Ayan pushed the spear aside.

The silver-eyed warrior looked at him.

"Now you understand."

Ayan nodded.

"Not everyone agrees with him."

The black-crowned Ayan laughed.

"Of course they don't."

He removed the crown.

"I didn't bring them here to agree."

He placed the crown against his chest.

"I brought them here to choose."

The black crown opened.

A black wave exploded outward.

Every Ayan in the army suddenly became connected by black threads.

Ayan's expression changed.

"He's controlling them."

The silver-eyed warrior shouted.

"Don't let him connect to you!"

Too late.

The black threads shot across the battlefield.

Ayan raised the Bridge.

Silver light collided with black energy.

The impact exploded outward.

Seraphine was thrown backward.

Mira grabbed her before she hit the ground.

Maren and Doctor Rowan were forced several meters away.

Ayan remained standing.

The black-crowned Ayan walked toward him.

"You still don't understand."

Ayan gritted his teeth.

"What?"

"You think freedom means making your own choice."

The black crown glowed.

"Freedom is choosing the correct outcome."

Ayan's eyes hardened.

"No."

He pushed forward.

"Freedom is being allowed to choose the wrong one."

The two powers collided.

The battlefield erupted.

Hundreds of Ayan's charged forward.

Mira fired her bow.

One arrow became three.

Three became ten.

The arrows struck the advancing versions, forcing them back.

Maren fought two armored Ayans simultaneously.

One carried a massive axe.

The other wielded a curved sword.

Maren blocked the axe and ducked beneath the sword.

"You people are really annoying!"

He kicked the swordsman backward.

The axe-wielder attacked again.

Maren barely blocked the strike.

Meanwhile, Doctor Rowan created a barrier around Seraphine.

"Can you stop them?"

Seraphine looked toward Ayan.

"Not them."

She touched her chest.

"I need to reach him."

Rowan frowned.

"Ayan?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because the crown is using the same connection as the Bridge."

She closed her eyes.

"I can feel it."

Her silver energy expanded.

It passed through the battlefield.

One Ayan after another turned toward her.

The black-crowned Ayan looked over.

His expression changed.

"The vessel."

Seraphine opened her eyes.

"You're afraid of me."

He laughed.

"No."

"Then why did you stop?"

The black-crowned Ayan's smile disappeared.

"Because you shouldn't exist."

Seraphine's expression became cold.

"Neither should you."

She released her power.

Silver light swept across the battlefield.

The black connections shattered.

Hundreds of Ayan's staggered.

Some collapsed.

Others looked around in confusion.

The black crown cracked.

The black-crowned Ayan stared at Seraphine.

"You shouldn't be able to do that."

Seraphine stepped forward.

"My mother said the same thing."

The black-crowned Ayan's eyes narrowed.

"Elena."

"Yes."

"She always believed the vessel could become more than a vessel."

Seraphine raised her weapon.

"She was right."

The black-crowned Ayan suddenly smiled.

"Then perhaps I should remove the problem."

He disappeared.

Ayan's instincts screamed.

He turned.

The black-crowned Ayan appeared behind Seraphine.

A black blade descended.

Ayan moved.

The blade struck his weapon.

The impact threw both of them across the street.

Ayan crashed into a wall.

The black-crowned Ayan landed smoothly.

Seraphine turned toward Ayan.

"Ayan!"

"I'm fine."

He stood.

Blood trickled from his mouth.

The other Ayan walked toward him.

"You protect her."

"Yes."

"You'll die for her."

"If necessary."

"Why?"

Ayan smiled.

"Because that's my choice."

The black-crowned Ayan's expression changed.

For the first time, uncertainty appeared in his eyes.

Ayan noticed.

"You don't understand."

"What?"

"You've spent so long trying to calculate every possibility that you forgot something."

The black crown began cracking again.

Ayan raised his weapon.

"People aren't equations."

The black-crowned Ayan attacked.

Ayan met him head-on.

Their weapons collided.

The first strike shook the street.

The second shattered the ground.

The third sent a shockwave through the surrounding buildings.

Neither gave ground.

The black-crowned Ayan moved faster.

Ayan blocked a slash aimed at his neck.

The force pushed him backward.

He twisted and struck the other's ribs.

The black crown absorbed the blow.

The enemy countered with a kick.

Ayan blocked it with his arm.

Pain shot through his bones.

He stepped backward.

The other Ayan attacked again.

Ayan activated the Bridge.

Time seemed to slow.

He could see every possible movement.

Left.

Right.

Above.

Below.

The opponent could also see them.

Because he was him.

The two fought through dozens of possibilities at once.

Ayan attacked.

The other blocked.

The other attacked.

Ayan redirected.

Every movement created another possible outcome.

The battlefield became filled with afterimages of them.

Seraphine watched with wide eyes.

They weren't simply fighting physically.

They were fighting across possibilities.

Every strike represented a choice.

Every defense created another path.

Ayan suddenly realized something.

The black crown wasn't making the other Ayan stronger.

It was allowing him to access the possibilities of his other selves.

He could borrow their abilities.

Their memories.

Their experiences.

Their victories.

Ayan couldn't compete with that.

Not yet.

The black-crowned Ayan struck him across the chest.

Ayan flew backward.

He crashed into the street.

Seraphine shouted.

Ayan struggled to rise.

The other Ayan approached.

"You cannot defeat me."

Ayan wiped blood from his mouth.

"Probably not."

He smiled.

"But I don't have to."

The other Ayan stopped.

Ayan raised his hand.

The Bridge activated.

But instead of connecting to the enemy...

It connected to every other Ayan on the battlefield.

Silver threads appeared.

The versions that had been fighting him suddenly stopped.

The black-crowned Ayan's expression changed.

"What are you doing?"

Ayan smiled.

"Giving them a choice."

The silver threads brightened.

Every version of Ayan felt the connection.

Every one of them could choose.

Obey the crown.

Or refuse.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then the silver-eyed warrior lowered his weapon.

"I choose."

Another Ayan dropped his sword.

"I choose."

Then another.

And another.

Hundreds began breaking away.

The black crown cracked further.

The black-crowned Ayan stared at them.

"You would betray me?"

The silver-eyed warrior shook his head.

"We're not betraying you."

He looked at Ayan.

"We're choosing ourselves."

The black crown shattered.

A wave of black energy exploded across the battlefield.

The black-crowned Ayan screamed.

The Seven Doors above them began collapsing.

The Observer's eye appeared again.

This time, it was not watching.

It was angry.

Ayan looked upward.

The golden eye opened completely.

A voice filled every world.

**YOU HAVE BROKEN THE CHOICE.**

Ayan smiled.

"Exactly."

The Observer's gaze shifted toward him.

**THEN I WILL CHOOSE FOR YOU.**

The sky split open.

Something began descending.

It was enormous.

Bigger than the city.

Bigger than the mountains.

A golden hand emerged from the crack.

Seraphine looked upward.

"What is that?"

Ayan stared.

His face became grim.

"The Observer."

The hand reached toward the world.

Ayan raised the Bridge.

The silver-eyed warrior stepped beside him.

Then another version.

Then another.

One by one, the different Ayans stood together.

Not as an army.

As individuals.

The black-crowned Ayan slowly stood amid the shattered crown.

He looked at Ayan.

For the first time, he smiled without arrogance.

"You found the third choice."

Ayan nodded.

"Yes."

The other Ayan looked toward the descending hand.

"Then let's see if it's enough."

Ayan tightened his grip.

Thousands of possibilities stood behind him.

Seraphine stood beside him.

The sky continued breaking.

And for the first time in the history of the Seven Doors...

the Key was no longer alone.
