Chapter 26 - Chapter 26: Shadows in the Courtyard

The night air in the palace courtyard was crisp, carrying the faint scent of jasmine and the subtle echo of distant laughter from the banquet halls. Liora walked alone, her mind already tracing Selene's next move. The Princess's public failure had only fueled her determination, and Liora knew Selene would attempt something far more dangerous and personal.

Eveline's earlier warning echoed in her thoughts: "She won't stop until she hurts someone close to you." Liora's hand brushed the edge of the fountain, cold marble grounding her resolve. She did not falter. If Selene wanted a trap, Liora would be ready.

Selene had chosen the night deliberately. Shadows hugged the corners of the courtyard, lanterns flickering as if hesitant to illuminate the scene. She moved silently, her eyes sharp and calculating, carrying a small vial in her hand. Her target was obvious: Seraphine.

Liora's eyes narrowed. She had anticipated the possibility. A quiet step, a subtle gesture, and Eveline was already at her side, their movements a seamless, silent defense.

"You're predictable," Liora said softly, her voice cutting through the night air. Selene froze, her lips pressing into a thin line.

"Predictable?" Selene's voice was low, venomous. "You think you can anticipate me at every turn?"

"I don't think," Liora replied evenly. "I know. And every move you make only tightens the web around you."

Selene hesitated, fury and fear warring in her expression. She had thought the night would give her the advantage, but Liora's foresight left her cornered. Every shadow, every angle, had been accounted for. Her bold attempt to harm Seraphine now threatened to expose her completely.

Eveline stepped forward, her voice firm. "It's over, Selene. Step away."

Selene's hand trembled slightly, the vial clinking against her fingers. For a moment, the fierce, untouchable Princess faltered, revealing the desperation beneath. Liora's gaze softened—not enough to show weakness, but enough to convey inevitability.

"You can either surrender this path," Liora said calmly, "or continue to falter. Every choice is yours—but every action has consequences."

Selene's shoulders slumped. The fight drained from her posture, replaced with the sharp sting of defeat. She disappeared into the shadows, leaving the courtyard and her schemes behind… for now.

The moonlight reflected off the fountain as Liora guided Seraphine away, her mind already planning the next layer of strategy. Selene would not give up so easily, but the Princess's bold moves had been checked, and Liora's allies were safe—for tonight.

Crown Prince Arion emerged from the shadows, his expression a mix of relief and admiration. "You anticipated her again," he said quietly. "Every time, you're always one step ahead."

Liora's lips curved faintly. "The palace is a battlefield, and perception is everything. If I misstep, someone else pays the cost. I will not allow that—not to my allies, not to anyone."

He approached closer, lowering his voice so only she could hear. "And yet… even knowing your mind, I feel the tension of each move. I should warn you—it's dangerous to hold so much in solitude."

Liora's gaze softened, but only briefly. "Solitude is often the only way to think clearly. But… I value your presence tonight. It makes even the shadows feel less threatening."

Arion's lips twitched in a rare, private smile. "Then I will remain, watching, supporting… perhaps more than before."

The courtyard remained quiet, but tension still lingered like a living thing. Selene's next move was inevitable, but Liora was ready. Every shadow, every whisper, every calculated step was now a part of her strategy. The palace was her web, and she controlled every strand.
