Chapter 28 - Chapter 28: The Edge of Betrayal

The palace was quiet that night, but the stillness carried a weight heavier than any banquet or council session. Liora moved through the dimly lit corridors, her steps silent and deliberate. Every shadow, every faint whisper of the wind against the marble walls was catalogued in her mind. Selene had grown reckless, and Liora could feel the air thick with impending danger.

A soft knock at her door announced Eveline, her face pale yet resolute. "Milady… there's been a message left at the eastern gates. It's from Selene."

Liora's eyes narrowed. She didn't even need to see the letter to know its tone. Desperation always spoke louder than words, and Selene's desperation had reached a dangerous pitch. Taking the parchment, she unfolded it carefully. The words were elegantly penned, but the meaning was blunt: Selene planned a direct attack, targeting not Liora herself, but someone dear to her—an attempt to force her into a trap she could not avoid.

By dawn, Liora had anticipated Selene's steps. The eastern gates were heavily monitored, the usual patrols doubled, and allies were strategically positioned. Every contingency was accounted for; every possible threat neutralized before it could even manifest. The air was tense, the palace ready for a confrontation that would decide more than a single skirmish—it could define the balance of influence entirely.

When Selene arrived, cloaked and careful, her confidence faltered the moment she saw the prepared defenses. Liora emerged from the shadows, calm and precise, her presence commanding the space around her. "I had expected you," she said softly, her eyes steady, unwavering. "And yet you persist, even knowing the outcome is inevitable."

Selene's jaw tightened, her hands gripping the edges of her cloak. "Do not assume you can predict everything," she hissed. "I will find a way to break you."

"You underestimate the web I've woven," Liora replied, her voice even but edged with steel. "Every step you take only tightens it. You are no longer free to act recklessly without consequence."

The confrontation did not escalate into violence that night. Selene, realizing her trap had been anticipated, retreated—humiliated yet more dangerous than ever. Liora allowed herself a quiet moment of satisfaction but knew better than to lower her guard. The palace was still a battlefield, every ally and noble a potential player in Selene's schemes.

Crown Prince Arion appeared beside her, silent yet present. "You anticipated everything," he said softly, admiration and concern mingling in his tone. "Every danger she threw… you've turned it against her. But she will not stop. You've seen how far she will go."

Liora's gaze met his, steady and confident. "I have. And I am ready. Selene's recklessness is her weakness. She acts in desperation, and every desperate act is an opportunity for those who remain calm and calculated."

Arion's hand brushed hers briefly, subtle yet grounding. "Then I will remain by your side. Where danger follows, I will follow as well."

A faint smile touched Liora's lips, rare and private. "Your presence is… appreciated. But you must remember, this is my battle to lead. Others may follow, but I choose the path."

He nodded, understanding. "And yet… I will remain. Watching, assisting… whatever you allow."

The palace remained quiet as they stood together, two figures aware of the storm gathering in the shadows. Selene would strike again, but Liora was no longer simply reacting—she was orchestrating, controlling, and shaping every outcome. The web was complete, the strands taut and strong, and the Princess at its center had no idea that every move she made only drew her tighter.
