Chapter 34 - Chapter 34: The Trap Within

The palace corridors felt colder that morning, as if the very walls had sensed Selene's escalating desperation. Every step Liora took was deliberate, every glance measured. Selene's audacity had grown, and the Princess knew this next move would be personal—a direct strike aimed at Liora herself.

Arion met her at the entrance to the council chambers, his expression tense. "I've heard whispers," he said, his voice low. "Selene is planning something… bold. Something that could endanger you directly."

Liora's gaze hardened, steady and unshaken. "Then we will ensure it never reaches me," she replied softly, her mind already calculating every possibility. "Every shadow, every whisper—anticipated. Every move accounted for. She believes she can corner me… but I am never cornered."

The afternoon council began under the watchful eyes of the nobility. Selene entered with a smile that belied the storm she carried inside. She had orchestrated a subtle plan: to publicly challenge Liora's authority in front of the Crown and all assembled nobles, aiming to force her into an embarrassing mistake.

Liora, serene in her composure, stepped forward. Every step radiated quiet authority, and every noble in the room instinctively turned their attention toward her. Selene attempted her gambit, weaving accusations of favoritism and mismanagement into carefully phrased sentences.

But Liora was ready. She had anticipated every word, every nuance, every hidden intent. Calmly, she countered each accusation with facts, testimonies, and carefully documented evidence of her loyal and fair leadership. The nobles murmured among themselves, approval evident in subtle nods and whispers.

Selene's composure faltered under the weight of Liora's prepared defense. Each intended strike—each carefully planted doubt—backfired, making Selene appear reckless and desperate. Her audacious gamble, meant to destabilize Liora, instead revealed her isolation and vulnerability.

Arion stood beside Liora, his presence both protective and reassuring. "Every time she tries to corner you, you turn it into a victory," he murmured. "It's… breathtaking."

Liora's gaze softened slightly, meeting his. "Control is not about brute force or anger," she said softly. "It's about anticipating, calculating, and acting with precision. Every challenge becomes an opportunity if one sees the moves before they are made."

He reached for her hand, a subtle, grounding gesture. "Then let me remain by your side. Not merely as a spectator, but as an ally… perhaps more than that."

Her lips curved faintly, a private smile just for him. "Then stay, Arion. But remember—this palace is my battlefield. Every victory, every step forward… is mine to command. Allies may follow, but leadership is earned."

By evening, the council had adjourned, the nobles whispering praises of Liora's foresight and restraint. Selene's latest attempt to publicly undermine her had failed spectacularly, leaving her reputation further weakened. But Liora knew this was only the beginning—Selene's desperation would drive her to increasingly reckless moves.

The moonlight bathed the palace gardens in silver, fountains glimmering softly. Liora walked alongside Arion, every step deliberate, every glance full of quiet confidence. The web of alliances, loyalty, and influence she had woven tightened around every shadow. Selene's next move would be dangerous—but Liora was prepared.

And for the first time, she allowed herself a thought she rarely admitted: with Arion by her side, she could face anything, even the boldest gambit Selene dared to attempt.
