When Anderson arrived home with Liam tucked safely in his arms, his steps slowed.
Rebecca sat on the floor in the living room, surrounded by dishes that had long gone cold.
His gaze swept across the table.
Fried rice. Stew. The small bowl of cut fruits Liam liked but never admitted to liking.
She had made everything. Every single thing she could think of.
She made them the meal with the thought that he'd return.
Rebecca didn't even notice them at first. Her head was lowered, her fingers gripping the edge of her dress, her shoulders trembling slightly.
"Becca."
Her head snapped up almost immediately. Then, her eyes fell on the boy in his arms.
"Liam." She called out, her lips trembling. She rose to her feet, stumbling in the process due to how long she remained on the floor.
Liam looked at Rebecca who was disheveled and he took his lower lip into his mouth, grazing it.
