Chapter 5 - the new normal

The days that followed blurred together in a strange mix of chaos, embarrassment, and reluctant routine.

David's once-silent house had transformed into something loud, lively, and completely out of his control. Mornings no longer began with the peaceful hum of his mana servers. They started with the sound of Kana's energetic humming as she bounced around the kitchen attempting to make breakfast. Her three fluffy golden-orange tails knocked over utensils, sent illusion sparks dancing across the counters, and occasionally brushed against David's legs as he tried to eat in peace.

"Darling! Try my special honey pancakes!" Kana would cheer, sliding a plate toward him with a bright grin, her tails wagging excitedly.

Lira, ever graceful and composed, would slither in shortly after, calmly correcting Kana's chaotic attempts while preparing her own perfectly brewed tea. "Darling, would you prefer something more refined? Proper nutrition is important for someone who spends all day hunched over machines."

David would sit at the table, face already warming, muttering a quiet "Either is fine…" while internally screaming. He was learning that "either is fine" was never actually an option. He would end up eating from both plates while the two girls watched him like hawks, each waiting for any sign that he preferred the other's cooking.

By midday, David would retreat to the basement to work on his mana servers. The hum of glowing crystals and rune circuits had once been his sanctuary. Now it was regularly interrupted.

Lira would appear at the top of the stairs, her elegant form framed in the doorway. "Darling, you've been down there for hours. You should take a break. I made some light snacks — fresh fruit and mana-infused yogurt."

Kana would follow moments later, tails swishing with excitement. "Or we could play a quick game! I bet I can beat you at mana-tile! It's super fun and I'll go easy on you, Darling!"

David would try to focus on stabilizing a ley-line node, only to feel one of Lira's smooth coils gently nudge his chair or one of Kana's fluffy tails brush against his leg. At first, every touch sent him into full panic mode. Now, after several days, the panic had dulled into a constant, low-level fluster. He was slowly — very reluctantly — getting used to the constant presence. The touches no longer made him jump out of his skin, though they still made his ears burn and his heart race.

One afternoon, while he was attempting to eat lunch in relative peace at the kitchen table, the rivalry reached a new peak.

Lira had prepared a beautifully arranged plate of grilled vegetables, mana-infused rice, and delicately seasoned fish. "Here, Darling. Proper nutrition is important. You need to keep your strength up."

Kana immediately countered by sliding a colorful, steaming bowl in front of him. "Or try my special fried rice with illusion herbs! It tastes amazing and makes little sparkles when you eat it! Way more fun than plain grilled stuff!"

David stared at the two dishes, fork hovering uncertainly between them. "I… can just have a little of both?"

Both girls narrowed their eyes at each other, then turned back to him with bright, competitive smiles.

"Of course," Lira said smoothly.

"Totally!" Kana added cheerfully.

He ended up eating from both plates while they watched him intently. By the end of the meal, David was stuffed and exhausted, but he had to admit — both dishes were actually really good. He even mumbled a quiet "Thank you" under his breath, which earned him twin looks of surprise and delight from the girls.

Evenings were the hardest part of the new routine.

After dinner, the three of them would end up in the living room. David would try to read a book or watch something calm on the crystal screen, but the girls had other ideas.

Lira would settle on one side of the couch, her coils neatly arranged, and invite him closer with a gentle tug of her tail. "Come here, Darling. You look tense. Let me help you relax. A little shoulder massage might do wonders."

Kana would immediately claim the other side, her tails fluffing up as she scooted in. "No way! Group cuddle time! It's way more fun with everyone together! I give the best hugs, Darling!"

David would find himself sandwiched again — one side warm and smooth, the other soft and energetic. He no longer tried to escape immediately like he did on the first few days. Instead, he sat stiffly, face red, slowly accepting that resistance only made the teasing worse.

One night, as the mana-lamps cast a soft golden glow over the living room, David sat between them, trying to focus on the screen. Lira's tail rested lightly across his lap while Kana's fluffy tails draped over his shoulders. He could feel the warmth from both sides, the gentle pressure, the occasional playful brush.

He caught himself thinking, for just a moment, that the house no longer felt empty.

He still blushed every time one of them called him "Darling." He still panicked a little when their tails or coils wrapped around him without warning. But the panic was slowly mixing with something else — a reluctant warmth he didn't want to admit to himself.

Later that night, as he lay in bed staring at the ceiling, David listened to the faint sounds from the rest of the house. Kana was humming softly in her room while arranging her things. Lira was quietly reading in the living room, her coils shifting occasionally against the floor.

He sighed deeply and pulled the blanket over his head.

The next morning, David woke up to the familiar sound of Kana singing off-key in the kitchen and Lira calmly correcting her pitch. He rolled out of bed, rubbed his eyes, and headed downstairs without hesitation.

When he entered the kitchen, both girls turned to him with bright smiles.

"Good morning, Darling," Lira said smoothly, sliding a cup of tea toward him.

"Morning, Darling!" Kana chirped, tails wagging as she placed a plate of slightly burnt but enthusiastic pancakes in front of him.

David paused in the doorway for a moment, face already turning pink.

"…Morning," he mumbled, sitting down at the table without being dragged this time.

He picked up his fork and took a bite.

He was slowly — very slowly and very reluctantly — getting used to the new dynamics of his life.

The house was no longer quiet.
