David stood frozen in the middle of his small backyard grove, heart pounding so hard he could hear it in his ears. Kana's three fluffy golden-orange tails were still wrapped playfully but firmly around his waist. Lira stood a few steps away, her elegant posture perfect, but her long tail flicked with clear irritation as it brushed against one of Kana's fluffy ones.
The air between the two monster girls crackled with sudden tension.
Kana, still beaming with bubbly energy, tilted her head and grinned wider. "This is gonna be so much fun! We can all live together like one big happy family!"
Lira's golden eyes narrowed just a fraction, her polite smile gaining a sharper edge. "Family? How charming. I was under the impression this was a two-person arrangement. The Program must have been quite eager to send you so quickly, little fox."
Kana's ears twitched, picking up the subtle challenge. Her tails puffed up slightly. "Little fox? I'm Kana! And I'm here to make sure Daaavid has plenty of smiles and energy every day. You look like the serious type — maybe he needs someone fun to balance things out!"
David's face was burning. He tried to take a step back, but Kana's tails tightened playfully while Lira's powerful tail slid forward, gently but possessively looping around his ankle.
"W-Wait—" he stammered, voice cracking. "Both of you, please — this is my house. Can we just… talk about this inside like normal people?"
Lira's smile softened into something dangerously sweet as she slithered closer. "Of course, Daaavid. Inside is much better. Don't you think?"
Before he could protest, Lira's tail wrapped around his waist from one side while Kana's fluffy tails tugged enthusiastically from the other. The two monster girls began dragging him back toward the house — one with smooth, powerful coils, the other with soft, energetic fluff. David's feet barely touched the ground as he was "escorted" inside.
"G-Guys, I can walk—" he tried weakly, but his words were lost as Lira and Kana both spoke at the same time.
Lira's voice was elegant and measured: "You must be tired after your little escape, Daaavid. Allow me to make you comfortable."
Kana's was bright and energetic: "Yeah! We'll take good care of you!"
The rivalry was no longer subtle.
The moment they crossed the threshold into the living room, the battle began in full classic style.
Lira immediately guided David toward the couch with her tail, trying to settle him down gently. "Here, sit. You've had a long day. I'll prepare some calming herbal tea from your garden. It's important to help shy humans relax."
Kana wasn't having it. She hopped in front, her fluffy tails swishing as she blocked the path. "Tea? Boring! I'll make something fun — fox spirit special honey-milk with a little illusion sparkle! It'll put a big smile on his face!"
David was unceremoniously deposited onto the couch by both of them at once. Lira's tail looped around one side of him while Kana's soft tails claimed the other, effectively sandwiching him between them.
He sank into the cushions, face crimson, eyes wide with panic.
Internal monologue:
This is not happening. I'm being fought over like a toy on my own couch. One has scary-strong coils, the other has fluffy tails that won't stop moving. I just wanted quiet servers and peace. Why is this my life now?
Lira leaned in from the left, her long black hair brushing his shoulder as she spoke in that smooth, teasing tone. "You poor thing. All this sudden change must be so overwhelming. Don't worry — I'll make sure everything stays calm and orderly."
Kana leaned in from the right, ears perked and tails wagging. "Calm is boring! You need fun, Daaavid! We can play games, tell stories, or I can show you some harmless fox magic! Bet I can make you laugh more than serious snake lady!"
Lira's eyes narrowed elegantly. "Fun? Or chaos? My dear fox, some of us prefer sophistication over constant hyperactivity."
Kana puffed her cheeks cutely. "Hyperactivity? At least I'm not trying to wrap him up like a present every five minutes!"
The two girls glared at each other over David's head, tails subtly competing for more space around him.
David sat perfectly still, trapped in the middle, blushing so hard he felt dizzy. Every time he tried to say something, one of them would turn back to him with a bright or teasing smile and continue the argument.
"Shouldn't we let Daaavid decide?" Lira suggested, voice sweet but with a clear challenge.
"Good idea!" Kana clapped her hands, eyes sparkling with mischief. "Hey, how about I call you 'Darling'? It's perfect! Short, sweet, and it shows you're my special human now~"
David's soul nearly left his body. "Darling?! No— absolutely not—"
Lira let out a soft, elegant laugh, but there was a competitive glint in her golden eyes. "Darling? How forward. I prefer something with a bit more dignity."
Kana stuck her tongue out playfully. "Dignity is boring! Darling fits perfectly!"
David buried his face in his hands, mortified beyond words.
He was saved — or perhaps doomed — by the sudden chime of the mana-stove timer in the kitchen. Lira had apparently started something earlier.
"I'll check on dinner," Lira said smoothly, uncoiling just enough to stand. She gave David one last teasing look. "Don't let the little fox tire you out too much while I'm gone… Darling~"
As soon as Lira disappeared into the kitchen, Kana immediately scooted closer, her fluffy tails wrapping around him again in a warm hug.
"She seems intense! But don't worry, Darling — I'll protect you from too much seriousness. We're gonna have so much fun together!"
From the kitchen, Lira's voice called out with perfect timing. "I can hear you, little fox. Try not to overwhelm our poor host on your first day."
David could only groan into his hands.
The rivalry had officially begun — elegant, teasing lamia versus bubbly, energetic kitsune — and he was caught right in the middle with a brand-new embarrassing nickname that was almost certainly going to stick.
His once-quiet house was now filled with the sounds of two monster girls subtly (and not-so-subtly) competing for his attention, and he had a sinking feeling this was only the start.
