Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Lines You Can’t Cross Twice

Liora didn't remember how she got home.

The city of Kolkata blurred past her in streaks of light and shadow, her heartbeat still echoing in her ears long after the night should have ended.

Run.

Kael's voice still rang in her mind.

Sharp. Urgent. Different.

Not the calm, controlled man she had met before.

Something had changed.

And now… she couldn't unsee it.

The penthouse felt colder than usual.

Too quiet.

Too normal.

Liora stepped inside, closing the door behind her, leaning against it as if the weight of the night had finally caught up to her.

Her hands were still trembling.

Not from fear.

From something else.

Something deeper.

Something dangerous.

"You look like you've seen something you shouldn't."

The voice made her freeze.

Arjun.

He stood in the living room, jacket off, sleeves rolled, a glass of whiskey in his hand. Calm. Composed. Watching her too carefully.

"How long have you been here?" she asked, forcing her voice steady.

"Long enough."

That wasn't an answer.

But it was enough.

His gaze dropped briefly—to her hands, her uneven breath, the tension she couldn't hide.

"Where were you?" he asked.

Simple question.

Complicated truth.

"Out," she replied.

"With him?"

The words hit directly.

No hesitation.

No guessing.

He knew.

Her silence confirmed it.

Arjun set the glass down slowly.

"I don't like being disrespected, Liora."

"This isn't about you," she said, sharper than intended.

His expression hardened.

"Everything about you is about me. Don't forget that."

The words felt suffocating.

Like chains tightening.

And for the first time—

She pushed back.

"No," she said quietly. "That's exactly what I'm starting to question."

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Arjun stepped closer.

Not aggressive.

Not loud.

But controlled in a way that felt worse.

"You don't understand the kind of world you're stepping into," he said. "People like him don't play games."

"Neither do people like you," she replied.

Something flickered in his eyes.

Annoyance.

Or maybe something darker.

"You think this is about feelings?" he asked. "This is about power."

Her heart tightened.

Because now—

She was starting to see it.

"This is about control," she corrected.

Arjun exhaled slowly, running a hand through his hair.

"I'm trying to protect you."

"From what?" she asked. "Or from who?"

His gaze locked onto hers.

"From making a mistake you won't survive."

The words lingered.

Not a threat.

Not entirely.

But not a warning either.

Something in between.

That night, Liora didn't sleep.

Again.

Because every time she closed her eyes—

She saw Kael.

Standing by the river.

Telling her to leave.

And then—

That look.

Not fear.

Not doubt.

Control.

In the middle of chaos.

The next evening came too quickly.

And with it—

A decision she didn't realize she had already made.

She found him.

Not by chance.

Not by accident.

But by following the only lead she had left.

The same street.

The same shadows.

Near Howrah Bridge.

And just like before—

He was there.

"You really don't listen, do you?"

Kael's voice was calm.

But there was tension underneath it now.

Liora crossed her arms.

"You told me to leave. Not to stay away forever."

His jaw tightened.

"That's exactly what I meant."

"Then you should've said it better."

For a moment, neither of them moved.

The distance between them felt heavier this time.

Not just tension.

Consequences.

"You shouldn't be here," Kael said again, quieter now.

"And yet," she replied, "here I am."

He looked at her.

Longer this time.

Carefully.

Like he was trying to understand something he couldn't control anymore.

"Why did you come back?" he asked.

The question wasn't simple.

And neither was the answer.

"Because you didn't push me away properly," she said.

His expression darkened slightly.

"That's not a good reason."

"It's honest."

A faint, almost invisible shift happened in his posture.

Not relaxed.

But less guarded.

And that was enough.

"You're getting pulled into something you don't understand," Kael said. "Last night wasn't random."

"I figured that."

"They weren't just looking for me," he continued.

Her breath slowed.

"Then who?"

Silence.

Just for a second.

Then—

"You."

The word hit harder than anything else.

Her heart skipped.

"What?"

Kael stepped closer.

This time, there was no hesitation.

No distance.

"They knew you were with me," he said. "Which means this isn't just about me anymore."

The world shifted.

Again.

"That's not possible," she said. "No one should know—"

"Exactly," Kael cut in.

Their eyes locked.

And suddenly—

Everything made sense.

Or rather—

Everything stopped making sense in a much worse way.

"You think someone from your world is involved," she said slowly.

Kael didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

Arjun's face flashed in her mind.

His words.

His control.

His warning.

Her chest tightened.

"No," she whispered. "That doesn't mean—"

"It means you're not safe," Kael said firmly. "Not with me. Not without me. Not anywhere in between."

The contradiction hit her immediately.

"So what am I supposed to do?"

His voice dropped.

"Stay close to me."

Her breath caught.

"That's your solution?" she asked. "After telling me to stay away?"

"I changed my mind."

"Why?"

This time—

He didn't hesitate.

"Because now you're part of this whether you like it or not."

The truth settled heavily between them.

No escape.

No distance.

No pretending anymore.

Liora stepped closer.

Close enough that the space between them disappeared again.

"But you still think I'll walk away," she said softly.

Kael looked at her.

Really looked.

And for the first time—

There was no control in his expression.

Only something real.

"No," he said quietly. "That's exactly what I'm afraid of."

The city moved around them.

Unaware.

Unstoppable.

But here—

Right here—

Everything had changed.

Because this wasn't just about attraction anymore.

Or curiosity.

Or even danger.

This was about being pulled into something that had no way out.
