The dungeon was breathing.
Wystan could feel it. Not metaphorically, Literally. The walls pulsed in slow uneven rhythms. The faint glow that once lined the veins of mana had darkened into something murky almost black-violet. The deeper layer wasn't just stronger...
It was different.
Alive in a way the upper floors weren't.
"There's something down there." Wystan voice echoed quietly. Not fear, not hesitation, just certainty. That deep rumble from below hadn't been random. It was a presence. Heavy, watching, waiting.
Wystan rolled his shoulders, exhaling slowly. "Alright." His gaze sharpened. "Before I go any deeper-" The system responded instantly.
[Skill Fusion System]
Weekly Usage: 2/4
Cooldown Status: Active (Phoenix Body Recovery Ongoing)
He frowned. "So that's how it works." The inform settled in "limited uses per week... and cooldown between fusions." He clicked his tongue. "Of course there's a catch."
Wystan leaned against the wall, crossing his arms. "Let's think this through properly."
"Okay," He muttered, pacing slowly. "No rushing, no stupid decisions." He raised a finger. "First fusion: Phoenix body." another finger. "Second: Predatory Shift"
"And third, Which means... I've got maybe one or two fusions left this week." He paused. "Assuming I don't collapse again like last time." His expression darkens slightly. The memory of the first fusion still lingered. That pain, that overwhelming force ripping through his body.
"Yeah, not doing that blindly again." He crouched picking up a loose stone, tossing it lightly in his hand. "So what do I need?"
Survival first. Always survival. "I already can't die easily." A smirk tugged at his lips. "That's covered." "Speed and combat instinct-covered."
"Awareness." He glanced at his status. "Not yet fully integrated." He tapped his chin. "So the smartest move would be..." his eyes narrowed.
"Enhance perception." But then, He paused.
"Or..." his gaze shifted to Phoenix body. "What happens if I evolved that further?" Silence.
The thought lingered. "No" He shook his head. "Too risky" Even he wasn't reckless enough to stack unknowns on top of his only safety net.
"I need balance." A slow grin spread across his face. "Then it's obvious." He opened the system again.
[Available Skills.]
- Predatory Shift
- Sharp Perception.
"You two..." The air seemed to tighten. "Let's see what happens when instinct meets awareness." His finger hovered.
"Third fusion." he inhaled. "Don't kill me this time." He continued.
And pressed...
[Fusing Skills:]
- Predatory Shift (Lvl.1)
- Sharp Perception (Lvl.1)
The world snapped. This time, there was no pain, only silence. Then a shift. Wystan's pupils dilated, His hearing sharpened. His vision expanded.
"...!"
He staggered. "What is-" Everything changed. The dungeon was no longer just a spac, it became information. Air currents, heat signatures, micro-movements in the shadows.
Every detail, flooded his senses. "Too much-!" he dropped to one knee "turn it-OFF!-" But there was no off, only control. Slowly, painfully, he forced himself to breathe. "In... out..." the floods slowly stabilized.
Condensed.
Focused.
The world snapped back, but not entirely. Something remained, clarity.
A new window appeared.
[New Skill Acquired:]
- Hunter's Domain (Lvl. 1)
Wystan staired "Domain?" the description unfolded.
[Hunter's Domain (Lvl.1)
- Expands sensory perception within a set radius.
- Tracks movement, intent, and threat level.
- Enhances reaction synchronization
- Scales with focus and mana
"Tracking intent?" He frowned. "That's not normal." That wasn't just perception. That was "reading enemies." A slow breath escaped him. "This is broken"
A faint sound echoed behind him. Wystan didn't turn "three." He said it calmly. "One behind the wall. Two approaching from the left corridor. " A pause. "Yeah." He smiled slightly. "That's definitely broken." Its like I can see the whole place.
The ghouls attacked. Wystan moved, before they even emerged. He stepped aside, as one burst from the shadows. His blade struck. Perfect timing.
CRACK-!
The second came, he ducked, spun, countered.
The third tried to ambush. Wystan turned instantly. "Not happening." The fight ended faster than any before. Wystan stood still. "I didn't even think" that was the terrifying part. "My body just... knew."
The system flickered
[Skill Fusion Cooldown Active]
-Next Fusion Available: 48 Hours
"Right..." He exhaled. "No more, For now..." a pause.
"Three fusions in one day..." He rubbed his neck. "That's probably pushing it." He said, "And I didn't know if there will be any backlash, or worse, fatigue."
-
Wystan moved deeper. The environment worsened. The mana density increased. Breathing felt heavier. "This place" he muttered. "It's like the dungeon's core is nearby." He had read about it. A rare cases.
When a dungeon evolved beyond its initial rank, it developed a Core Zone.
Stronger monsters.
Unstable mana.
And sometimes...
"Boss-tier entities." He stopped walking. "Yeah"
Hunter's domain pulsed. "Definitely... something big." Long
Wystan leaned against the wall again. "I could leave." The thought came naturally. "Find another way up. Escape. Report it." That's what a normal hunter would do. "But I'm not normal anymore."
Silence.
"And if I leave?" He looked at his hands. "I must stay weak." A pause. "No" His expression hardened. "I've been weak long enough." His voice dropped.
"They left me to die." A faint ember flickered in his palm. "So I'll get strong enough." His eyes darkened. "That they regret it."
The ground trembled again, closer this time. A low, guttural sound followed. Not a ghoul, not anything he had fought before. Wystan's instincts flared. Hunter's domain expanded.
And then, "What the hell...?" He froze. "That's not one..." His voice dropped. "That's multiple signals... layered..."
like-
One presence, but made of many. "What is that?"
Wystan slowly drew his blade. "Alright." A grin spread across his face. Not reckless, not insane, focused. "Let's see how far I've come." His body relaxed.
Hunter's domain activated.
Phoenix body pulsed.
Every instinct sharpened, every sense aligned. For the first time Wystan wasn't surviving. He was hunting. He was having fun.
Deep within the dungeon, something opened. Its eyes. Dozens of them, all at once. And for the first time, something inside the dungeon noticed him.
