The transport trucks were huge.
Sixteen-wheeled armored beasts that rumbled through the city streets like rolling fortresses. Each one could carry fifty students, and the convoy stretched back far enough to block traffic for blocks. Thick steel plating covered every surface. Weapon turrets bristled from the roof. The wheels alone were taller than most people.
Holden sat near the back of Transport Seven, wedged between Renna and a window. Lyra sat across from him. Emric was beside her, nose buried in a survival manual he'd checked out from the academy library.
Renna pressed her face against the glass like a kid on a field trip. "Look at the buildings getting smaller! Oh, and there's the outer wall! I've never been outside the city before, have you guys? I mean, obviously some of you have probably been outside."
"You haven't stayed in one place since we boarded," Lyra observed.
"That's because I'm excited!"
