Chapter 8 - Chapter 8 — Controlled Gain

The pattern held.

That was the first thing he confirmed as he continued moving through the jungle, his body responding to the terrain with a level of consistency that had not been possible before. The ground still resisted him, but it no longer disrupted his movement. Instead, it became part of it, something he adjusted to automatically rather than something that forced correction after the fact.

That reduced mistakes.

And reduced mistakes meant better results.

A faint shift ahead caught his attention, followed by another slightly further to the side. Two separate movements, not connected, but close enough that their awareness could overlap if handled incorrectly.

That presented both opportunity and risk.

He slowed immediately, lowering his profile and reducing unnecessary motion. Approaching one target had become reliable. Approaching two at once required more control.

That meant planning.

He adjusted his position, circling slightly to change the angle of approach. The goal was not just to reach one of them, but to do so without alerting the other.

That required separation.

He waited.

The first creature shifted slightly to the side, creating a small gap between them. Not large, but enough.

That was sufficient.

He moved.

Controlled.

Measured.

Each step placed carefully to avoid drawing attention from either target.

The closer one remained unaware.

The second hesitated briefly, reacting to something unrelated, then continued.

That confirmed the approach.

Closer.

Closer.

He struck.

The connection was clean, the improved control of his stinger allowing the motion to land with precision. The creature stilled immediately.

No resistance.

But he did not pull back right away.

That had been a mistake before.

He waited.

The second creature shifted slightly, its awareness brushing against the disturbance but not fully identifying it.

That meant the movement had not been significant enough.

Good.

He pulled the body back slowly, consuming it with minimal disruption. The process was familiar now, efficient and consistent.

The presence formed.

He reached.

It settled quickly.

No message followed.

That was expected.

He shifted his attention to the second creature.

It had not moved far.

Still unaware.

That confirmed something important.

Controlled actions reduced chain reactions.

He adjusted again, maintaining the same low, deliberate movement as he approached the second target. There was no need to change what had worked.

The distance closed.

The creature paused.

He waited.

Then struck.

Clean.

The result matched the first.

Better.

He consumed it quickly, drawing in the presence as before. The pressure settled easily, integrating without resistance.

Still no message.

That did not matter.

The efficiency had improved.

That was clear.

He moved again, continuing the pattern.

Hunt.

Refine.

Repeat.

Another movement appeared ahead, this one larger than the last two. Its pace was slower, but its presence carried more weight, suggesting greater resistance.

More gain.

But also more effort.

He approached carefully, applying the same principles.

Control.

Positioning.

Timing.

The distance closed without issue.

The creature reacted slightly earlier than most, its awareness sharper, but it did not flee immediately.

That meant the timing needed to be exact.

He waited for the moment.

Then struck.

The connection was not perfect.

The creature resisted, its body stronger than the others, forcing him to adjust his angle mid-motion. The first strike did not end it.

He corrected immediately.

The improved flow of his stinger allowed a second strike to follow without delay, landing before the creature could escape.

The body stilled.

Not clean.

But effective.

He pulled it closer, consuming it as before.

The presence formed.

Stronger.

He reached.

The pressure built more noticeably this time, settling into him with a weight that lingered slightly longer before stabilizing.

Stealth — Level 4

The message appeared clearly.

The improvement followed.

Movement became even more contained, the reduction in disturbance more pronounced. The ground still resisted, but the effect of that resistance on his presence decreased further.

That changed how he could approach targets.

He tested it immediately.

Another creature moved nearby, smaller but more alert. Its reactions were quicker, its pauses shorter.

More difficult.

He adjusted his approach, reducing his movement even further than before. The difference was noticeable. Where previously his movement would have caused minor disturbances, now those disturbances were smaller, less defined.

The creature did not react.

Closer.

Still no reaction.

That confirmed it.

He waited.

Then struck.

Clean.

No resistance.

Better.

He consumed it quickly, drawing in the presence without delay.

No message followed.

That did not matter.

The improvement was already clear.

A sudden shift behind him interrupted the pattern.

Fast.

Direct.

He reacted immediately, lowering his body and reducing movement instead of accelerating. The creature lunged, its motion sharp and aggressive, but its tracking faltered slightly as his presence remained minimal.

He adjusted direction gradually, maintaining controlled movement instead of creating distance through speed.

The creature overshot.

It corrected.

But too late.

He continued moving, maintaining the same reduced presence until the distance became sufficient.

The creature slowed.

Then stopped.

It lost him.

That confirmed something else.

Stealth scaled with control.

Not just movement.

Intent.

He remained still briefly, ensuring the threat had passed before moving again.

The pattern remained stable.

Hunt.

Refine.

Improve.

The ground still resisted.

The jungle still shifted.

But his interaction with both had become consistent.

And consistency—

Allowed him to take more.

Without increasing risk.
